Huge crowds back in the 80's and 90's to bad the split did severe damage to open wheel racing!

I was there. Seated in the paddock. I recall a pitstop during the race right in front of us,where a crew member was caught under a rear wheel. The spinning tire left a black mark across his torso and his teammates dragged him behind the wall, as he was obviously injured. It was a green flag pit, I don't know which crew and never heard anything about the incident. I always wondered how that crew member ended up. It was a hot day. Indy was magic. I was 13.

Ive seen them all live since 89, which is hard work with it starting at 2am my time here in Sydney, AUS. Like you said, Indy is magic. FTR, was an instant Little Al fan so the 89 finish was a "super start", to use some UnserJr speak. 😊

I was at the race in 88, and as I recall Rick Mears car caught some air and sailed the car into a complete roll, landing on the wheels going on to win the race! It could be my 68 year old memory but I swear it happened!

Used to love watching this race as a kid in the 80s and 90s.
The Indy 500 was so huge back then, and this TV crew was awesome. Every single one, Page, Unser, and Posey were all great, but an unsung talent was Jack Arute lol. He was so cool, great at running around, and getting info from ANYONE to answer any questions the booth had muttered about
I never really thought about him much as a kid, watching Indycar on ABC, but watching now, Arute really brought a lot to these broadcasts, and was so smooth in delivering all those impromptu sessions where he spilled the beans on what was happening in the race.

Right there with you @jojowarTV! I so love this era. In fact, IMO the true "Golden Era" was quite a stretch from the mid-fifties to this race in 1988. So many different cars, engine choices, the drivers so tough and gritty, the owners so colorful, and above it all, "The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race" was absolutely "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing!"

Good powerplant variety in 1988- you had the Ilmor-Chevy V8, Cosworth DFX V8, Judd V8, Porsche V8, a few stock-block Buick 3300 V6s, and a single Chevy V6 stock-block in Stan Fox's AJ Foyt '86 March entry. A great drive by Mears to win his 3rd Indy 500, but Scotsman Jim Crawford also had an outstanding drive in his King Racing Protofab '87 Lola-Buick to eventually finish 6th. Runner-up Emerson Fittipaldi said he couldn't match Mears's PC17 on pure speed with his March 88C-Chevy.

In the video title, could you please not include the name of the winner OR use a photo of the winner in Victory Lane OR a photo of the winning car? Some of us like to watch older previous races without knowing who won before even clicking on it . . . . 🤦

Are you really complaining about spoilering the outcome of a 35 year old race?
It doesn’t matter who wins, it’s still amazing to watch!

@@rolux4853 Having followed the Indianapolis 500 from the late 50's to present day, even though the winner(s) are in NO doubt, just watching these races unfold with those iconic drivers, cars and teams is all the entertainment needed!!! I totally agree with you. Enjoy every race for the spectacle that it was. Even with many of the "also ran drivers," I find myself having a whole new level of appreciation and respect for their participation during their Indy 500 careers...

I totally agree with you. For most fans like myself, we already know who won probably 80% of the Indianapolis 500 mile races. Certainly every single race in the modern era I know who the winner was. But there are plenty of professional bowling tournaments where I have no idea who won that I watch randomly on TH-cam, same thing with tennis matches, some boxing matches I have no idea who won, I love to watch not knowing who’s going to win. The mystery and drama of a sporting event is special. I totally agree with you that no race broadcast should ever have the winner mentioned in the title. Not everybody knows in advance who won every single race. thank God for TH-cam, there are some early races from the 1970s where I have no idea who won.

This is probably a crazy notion, but I think it's possible Penske intentionally messed with Danny and Big Al's front wing adjusters. Not to cause a crash, as happened with Danny (who probably would have held on and won if he hadn't crashed out) but just to give them enough push to allow Rick to beat them. He was so competitive and Rick was far and away his driver that it seems plausible. As Danny slyly said during his post crash interview "Roger's pretty cagey when it comes to running Rick's car". What are the odds TWO cars in ANY 500 field would have broken wing adjusters (not sure I've ever seen it) but two out of three on one team? Incredibly remote. Food for thought. In any event a great race from peak Golden Era Indy Cat/CART. This was THE biggest event of the year, everybody watched it talked about in on Monday, and the drivers were world famous superstars. Hard to imagine given how niche and culturally obscure IndyCar is today. And the irony is the product-the racing-is better today than ever!

There’s something wrong with you. Roger Penske would never do something like that. Ever. Get a clue.

One of the crew guys made a blog post several years ago, maybe Chuck Sprague, talking about this. The adjuster was part steel, part aluminum, and the steel ate the weaker aluminum. Rick in part got lucky, and probably wasn't asking the team for front wing adjustments. He asked for the "open" rims to replace the slick rims instead of adjusting the wings at his first stop. So he probably avoided making an adjustment before it was known from the other two cars to not touch the front wing.

Church of Scientology not only sponsor Roberto Guerrero but also put a commercial ad for the race.

Very disappointed that this race was not only cut in half, but the coverage begins at the green flag? Are you kidding me? We don’t get to see any of the pageantry and traditions leading up to the start? All of the interviews? Paul Page’s famous opening teaser? Not to mention the shotty video frame rate is probably giving people seizures.
As a long time dedicated fan of this great race I am very disappointed that this was put out by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Your fans deserve better than this. Much better.

Maybe Indcar should adopt the "green-white-checkered" system to end a race that NASCAR uses, meaning that the Indianapolis "500" might actually run 502-1/2 or 505 miles, to insure at least two green flag laps at the end.

    • @adri9428
      @adri9428 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, or maybe not. GWC was made for NASCAR. The Indy 500 doesn't need a guaranteed two lap sprint. That's the magic of the race: make your moves before it's too late.
