Fun fact: those hollow pyramids are actually hopper structures! They form when crystal growth happens fastest on the edges, rather than the faces, of the crystal. If you've ever seen a big rainbowy chunk of lab-grown bismuth, it's the same deal.
With this and the implied draining of the Dense Biozone, I wonder if Hoxxes was much more hospitable long, long ago. (The fossils would also suggest as such.) From what we know of Hoxxes as a whole, it's tidally locked and being blasted apart by its local star's radiation (the side locked to the star no doubt being the Radioactive Exclusion Zone and/or Sandblasted Corridors). Perhaps eons ago, Hoxxes was some tropical paradise, not unlike Earth during the days of the Dinosaurs. Perhaps a great cataclysm came and resulted in Hoxxes' now shattered form, while also relocating it far closer to the sun, altering its climate and orbit, making the surface uninhabitable. Water dried up, and all life had to migrate down into the vast, subterranean depths wound up adapting into the super hostile monsters we all know today. (After all, we know large insects prevailed on Earth during that time.) Heck, perhaps all the water that remains wound up as the Glacial Strata, the layer of Permafrost that the majority of the planet's crust sits upon - what didn't dry up (or was blasted away by the sun) froze solid thanks to some strange geological phenomenon, now trapped forever beneath miles of stone. It's a strange sort of tragedy to consider that Hoxxes might have actually been a really nice planet, billions of years ago. Now it's a hellhole full of creatures that can only survive by being obnoxiously hostile to everything they come across.
If Hoxxes is tidally locked, then its nighttime face will be blisteringly cold. The Glacial Strata could be remnants of aquifers, or surface bodies of water which drained into the tunnels, which then froze as the planet stopped spinning and its heat radiated off into space. The Magma Core indicates that the planet is still geologically active, so the mantle could be keeping the Glacial Strata just warm enough to support life, but not warm enough to melt the ice. A perfect equilibrium, but one perhaps only possible on the nighttime side of Hoxxes.
One thing i would like to add is that since gunk seeds, apoca blooms and other plants do manage to live here despite the arid climate, it can be assumed they need little to no water to survive
I’ve noticed that point extraction missions in this biome can have really cool designs after season 3. Designs where the base is in a small cave, with small tunnels leading to aquarqs. Almost like an ant hill type of thing
Some Deep Dive descriptions for the Salt Pits also contribute in giving an idea of what treading in this beautiful, yet deadly, region of Hoxxes feels like. I recall one in particular, that said something along the lines of: " Some say the motto 'Leave no Dwarf behind' originated in this region; and anyone who's seen what prolonged exposure to the salt does to a dwarf knows why. " Congrats on another darn lovely video, Historian; loving this biome lore series!
The pits are the most understated atmosphe of the DRG biomes in my opinion. No constant annoyances, no big loud events, no serene beauty, just you in a fucking hole looking for minerals. It's dry, it's probably cold, and it's just completely and totally lonely.
Worth noting the Deep Dive descriptions in some of these episodes, perhaps. Wishing for a clam-trap stationary enemy - rush in and grab something when it's open or it will snap shut before you leave it.
Here's a fun fact, those pyramid shaped salt crystals are an actual formation of salt crystals during certain weather conditions and it makes it freaking expensive
One of the Deep Dive mission descriptions (for the Sandblasted Corridors) claims that Enor Pearls are formed by erosion from high winds rather than coming from a creature, though it's not hard to imagine that the salt pit's pearls are instead essentially ancient river rocks leftover from when it was full of water.

@@irregularassassin6380 Hmm! I didn't even consider what would be happening on the dark side, this is a big possibility...!
We see Hoxxes lost a massive chunk of its crust, the explanation confuses me, but i think it's a good place to search for answers
