Same here. Myself and my big sister watched the September '65 pageant. I was in second grade. We loved Debbie Bryant's little musical comedy talent bit. My sister told me "I'll bet that blonde from Mississippi wins." We were delighted to see Debbie Bryant of Kansas win instead.
@@swenartonfineart I remember watching her win the Miss Massachusetts title and believing that my home state was FINALLY going to win Miss America! Nice to hear that she was beautiful inside and out.
Miss New Mexico was very pretty. Miss California seemed the all around best though. Oklahoma nice (gorgeous legs) but I was surprised she won. Surprised to see New Hampshire in the top ten, that's pretty rare. Loved the Joan Crawford PepsiCo commercial where she says PepsiCo is proud to help the contestants with scholarship funding....(("Don't f*** with me fellas!!") They should've ditched Bess Myerson with her unappealing, schoolmarm demeanor.
To this day Charlene Dallas was the most beautiful Miss California ever. She did everything right at Miss America. Preliminary Swimsuit and Preliminary Talent. Oklahoma was attractive, even with her beady little eyes. She however had a perfectly horrid talent presentation. To this day it was the biggest injustice in Miss America folklore.
@@californiagold3857 Susan Anton completely blew her final question. It was almost like she didn't want to win. Kathy Bauman should have been the winner. You have to wonder what the judges were thinking in their final ballot. Baumann won both preliminaries and really was the total package.
I have met Jane Jayroe when she interviewed me for a local television program. She is beautiful, modest and gracious with lovely, non-beady eyes, lol. Her talent was appreciated by the judges because it was different and certainly not even close to the worst ever presented. She never expected to win and was completely blindsided when she did. She almost quit during her reign because she felt so unprepared but was talked into staying. I've seen many pageants in which the most beautiful girl did not win. The judges are looking for more than the prettiest face. They are looking for a woman who is poised, able to relate to people and put them at ease. That's Jane. She is a sweetheart.
Miss Vermont, Karen J Tuttle was my Wife for a few months in 1983.
The first Miss America Pageant/Competition in color!!!!
Debbie Bryant was certainly one of the most beautiful MA's ever. It was the first time I saw a beauty show when she was crowned in September 1965.

This not only was the first Miss America Pageant in color...it was the first one NBC televised.
The only year when Miss NH reached the top 5
Carol Kennedy (Miss Massachusetts) is my favorite, because of her connections to the 1964 New York World’s Fair! ❤️
I was her hairdresser for her wedding when she lived in Washington DC. Such a beautiful person in every way.

I like the traditional vintage pageants, but that first production number was straight out of 1935, not 1966.
there is no sound
Just played it one two computers, and there is sound.

No I'd have to say a bigger injustice was Susan Anton not winning, or at least Kathy Baumann, instead of Pamela Ann Eldred...
@@miloandtock1 Equally so. Susan should have won.
