It's no surprise. Most people can't afford to spend a thousand bucks on a smartphone, that's ridiculous. I think sometimes reviewers get too immersed in that flagship world and forget about the phones most people actually use

Not really, they do recommend phones for “most ppl” tho, there’s just more hype around the flagships, and it’s gotten out of control, let’s also keep in mind that ppl who buy one thousand dollar phones are the same demographic that either have cash laying around their house or won’t be upgrading anytime soon. Most ppl don't buy 1K phones straight upfront, you have to remember that alot of ppl take advantage of the yearly upgrade program with their carriers where you can buy it but pay for them monthly

Honestly speaking, not everyone can afford a thousand dollar smartphone and not everyone needs all the features or gimmicks on a phone. Some people just need a phone that can get through the day, do tasks, and not hurt their wallets.
I commend/applaud TH-camrs who review budget and mid-range phones because not everyone has the luxury to afford flagships.

I can afford to buy a $1000 smartphone, but there's no way in hell I'm buying a $1000 smartphone in 2019. There are so many great affordable smartphones starting at $200 that have so many features and most importantly, they all make great phone calls. None of these "new tech" in smartphones is worth the over $1000 price tag.

Surprise surprise! Economics class! If everyone could afford flagships for everything we'd all be flying the best personal jets, helicopters, onto the world's bestest production yachts, with the quietest submarines to dig for treasure at the bottom of the Mariana trench only because grandma lost some jewelry from the titanic after losing her v-card in a CAR inside a cruise ship. Then after finding her v-card memoirs we'd send it to Mars, because grandma gave that SpaceX engineer some throat, while her dentures rubbed his balls. Meanwhile some Ring webcam was being hacked and the link was sent to the emergency broadcast system. Because Ring is the new flagship of selfies.

    Really great video.
In the past few years the advancements are merely curved screens, foldable phones, motorized popup cameras, in-display fingerprint readers, increasingly faster charging, wireless charging, higher resolution cameras, and obviously faster processors. Some aesthetic trends have also come about, like glass backs and funky color gradients on the back. Maybe there's more but these are the major ones. Thing is though, most of these things aren't absolute necessities and most folks just want to watch a video or check their socials, as this video states. So apart from the glamor of flagships, most folks will be perfectly happy with a mid-range along with the satisfaction that they got a terrific deal for the money. Most don't need super blazing speeds either and mid-range processors are very fast already. Phones are fast becoming like PCs. The only thing that will help it keep selling is because phones are often in your hands or pockets so there's a greater tendency to damage them, making it necessary to get a new one. Not so much with PCs that just sit on your desk and are less subject to mishaps.
I came from an S9+ to a Redmi Note 8 Pro and I just love how the Redmi doesn't have that irritating curved screen and delivers very near the performance of the S9+ which was $1200 at the time of purchase, while the Redmi was just $210 after promo codes, direct from Xiaomi.
As time goes on and the tech stagnates it'll be a competition based on pricing, which is already happening now. And for us that can't be a bad thing.

Working at a cnd wireless carrier I find myself more and more showcasing these midrange devices to customers. When I ask customers what they use their phone for and they say texting and SM, its getting easier to say well any phone here will do that. What do you want your phone to do that it doesn't right now? That helps narrow it down further and often a midrange phone has the features people are looking for, they just don't know it unless someone takes the time to really break it down.

As a smartphone user since ~2010, I've never dropped a phone. But as of the past few years, most phones have glass backs, which are really slippery, so I've been using skins and cases (mostly cases because having a kickstand built into one is really handy). If manufacturers would just go back to plastic or metal backs, I wouldn't need a case...

Here's the thing, I'd go for a mid range, but the camera is really important to me, like it's the most important thing, everything else i don't even really need to care about, because it's pretty much a guarantee when you buy any 2020, or 2021 phone, that you're going to get a decent screen, battery etc. And it would bug me knowing that I could get a much better camera

when Mid-range has headphone jacks, dual cameras and boasting similar or better performance as Flagships of 1-2 years ago. i can forgo flagship features and water resistant feature.
and another thing is mid range is produced in large numbers, that means 2 things.. first more phones in the market means their problems is encountered more frequently and fixed. second is spare parts, either new parts or refurbished parts from damaged phones. it means your phone can get that part replaced at a low price for longer period after production ended(excluding those with a fatal flaw in design or production).
flagships are there to create a buzz. features that will trickle down to the bottom after a few years.
from my Motorola Quench XT5, iphone 4(for 3 months), HDC Galaxy S3 to a sony C3. when i jumped on the Huawei Mate 9, it was impressive but i felt i didnt need all the features. but at least it freed me from signing a bundled phone+telco plans. and i didnt feel a need to buy a dedicated Digicam.
planned obsolence is a thing, now that my mate 9 is going to be 3 yrs old, the phone runs hotter (probably thermal paste has dried out), retains charge shorter (requiring a 10k mAh powerbank for a busy day). i'm done with Kirin processor... media player on Snapdragon is more versatile on my Sony C3 to my mate 9.
my next phone will be mid range with specs slightly better than my mate 9.
USB type C is a must, Dual camera minimum, 4-6GB of ram, SD card slot and a 3.5mm jack(i have a bluetooth headset but when you are on a long trip that 3.5mm cable is nice to have) . water resistant will just be a bonus if possible and rear fingerprint.
leaning towards the the samsung A70s/A51 or a used/on sale S10.
