    When retreating my grandfathers unit was embedded with the Wiking division for a while before being send to Czechoslovakia and then towards Berlin for the final battles to defend it.. Somewhere along the way they got captured by the Russians who were already ahead of them. He survived though passed away a year ago. Eventually he was with the 23. SS Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Division Nederland serving in Regiment "de Ruyter" before the division seized to exist. Was at the eastern front for 2 years in total i believe.. I can imagine him riding in one of these... very well done..

    I remember back in the year 2000 I went to the old battle of the bulge reenactment in Pennsylvania. We were moving up as the Americans when 2 halftracks like here came at us and stopped and 2 squads of Germans hit our one. It was quite the experience in the snow! As a 16 yo at the time I thought it was amazing then to go talk to the wwii vets that came out to see the event.

    • @rattussapiens2854
      @rattussapiens2854 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      There are hand-operated differential brakes that act on the tracks as well the steering wheel turning the front wheels.

    • @13thdukeofwybourne69
      @13thdukeofwybourne69 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Looking at the understeer (until more than a few degrees of steering is used) I'm not sure, in these particular low traction conditions, that the front wheels _are_ actually effective for some of the changing of direction.
      Around 1:58 the vehicle does a right turn as it goes through the gate, pulls a very instantaneous skid steer, typical of a tracked vehicle.
      Some sort of linked system for skid steering for traversing heavy mud or snow? Skid/differential brake/clutch type steer actuated by wheel above a certain steering input perhaps? or separate levers or pedals? Maybe some one could help me out here?

    • @mikemulligan5731
      @mikemulligan5731 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@13thdukeofwybourne69 There is an automatic system, based off of how many degrees the wheels have turned from center, that changes the track speeds between the two sides to get the vehicle to turn faster. If I remember correctly there are two positions, at like 15 degrees and 25 degrees or something similar, which when exceeded results in the tracks changing relative speed to each other, and there are two levels of rotation speed offset. Read that somewhere but I have never actually driven one.
