  • During World War II, over 1,300 Tiger I's, nearly 500 Tiger II's, 74 Jagdtigers, 18 Sturmtigers, and 91 Jagdpanzer Elefant/Ferdinands were built. Today, only a handful examples of the "Tiger family" survive today.

    Tiger 131 England : Knowing that the Allies were preparing a major push toward Tunis, the Germans launched a spoiling attack on the night of 20/21 April 1943.[3] Four points were attacked simultaneously, including a pass on the north side of a hill called Djebel Djaffa.[4] Two Tigers and several other tanks advanced through this pass before dawn, and were gradually driven back during the day. Tiger 131 was hit by three shots from 6-pounders from British Churchill tanks of A Squadron, 4 Troop of the 48th Royal Tank Regiment (RTR). A solid shot hit the Tiger's gun barrel and ricocheted into its turret ring, jamming its traverse, wounding the driver and front gunner and destroying the radio. A second shot hit the turret lifting lug, disabling the gun's elevation device. A third shot hit the loader's hatch, deflecting fragments into the turret. The German crew bailed out, taking their wounded with them and leaving the knocked-out but still driveable and largely intact tank behind.[5] The tank was secured by the British as they captured Djebel Djaffa hill.[6] Tiger 131 was the first intact Tiger tank captured by British forces.

    Saumur's Tiger I is being restored to running condition and should be operational in 2025, making the Saumur museum the proprietor of TWO working tiger tanks, a I and a II, alongside several other running panthers, panzer IV's and others.

    That working Königstiger deserves to be in a movie and to be treated better than Tiger 131 in Fury. They should both be stars in their own right. Also it would be fantastic to see some of these non runners with their own motive power. Surely the Maybach HL230 blueprints/plans are still available?………

      The Australian one is going to be a runner. They are currently working on restoring the engine and finding as many original parts as possible. It's going to take some time but it will run. They already hired some guys who specialize in tank engines to restore/fabricate parts for them. You can find it on their TH-cam channel.

      There is a series of videos on utube of its rebuild. It was in pieces when they got it having been blown to bits in russia but it is all one tank apart from some bits they had to fabricate. During the restoration they did find the serial number and have sourced what records exist to follow its history and in particular its service and maintenance records! They dont have the suspension or drivetrain but are on the hunt to find suitable components to finish the job and get it drivable again!

    What is a Tiger II P?

    • @SurvivingHistory
      @SurvivingHistory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Tiger II P is the designation for a Tiger II equipped with a more curved turret produced by Henschel. The turret was first put on a Tiger II in late 1943 with up to 50 models receiving the turret. The reason so few were equipped with the turret is due to the 'Shot Trap' made by the curvature that can bounce a shell into the roof of the hull. The decision was quickly made to replace the turret with the more popularly known production turret which has a flat face and significantly removed the chance of a Shot Trap.
