I feel that Platos is where you take clothes that haven't sold online or that you were planning on taking to goodwill but would like to get some extra cash. I took stuff to Platos for a while because I didn't want to deal with the hassle of posting online but I got back into selling online so I won't be taking anything to Platos unless It has a hard time selling online and sits for a few months.
If they are paying you upfront its not consignment its resale. Completely different and something to consider when selling because they are paying you up front for your items that aren’t even guaranteed to sell whereas a consignment shop you have to wait for your items to sell etc.
i can't be bothered to list items that are only going to sell for $15-25 i specificaly source those type of items at bins for a quick doubling or triple of my money at Platos, and call it a day. I only expend energy listing items that will sell for at least $45. my ASP is $68, i have sweet sourcing here on Oahu
Every time I go they take like 2-3 things and I get like $15. It’s such a waste of time! It looks like from the comments though, other people have better luck. Maybe it’s my location that’s just terrible!
It's still work and gas and time to take stuff to Platos and get pennies. Often they sell Walmart brands but don't take Aritzia. In most cases, my time is worth more. IMO, it's better to donate to a womens shelter etc.
Yes!!! Donating to a local women’s shelter is a great idea too. But you’re right-they’re just not consistent in what they take, and it does take time and effort to get to Plato’s.
When I was in highschool (about 13years ago) I brought in a whole box of clothes- Abercrombie jeans and tops and brands that I thought they would take and they took like 2 shirts and said my clothes were “too small” and that the brands weren’t in style anymore. Meanwhile, they were selling soo many items that were years old or ugly
Went to sell name brand items to Plato's, new with tags. They declined all the items, yet while waiting I walked the aisles and saw dirty, worn, raggedy shoes with holes being sold. Huh?! They offered me $1 for an Aldo Bellini purse new with tags. 😂 Will never set foot in there again.
Same here. I bought clothes at the bin store made sure they had no imperfections. In style, different sizes. I think they didn't even check them they just said it was clothes that didn't "sell well" when they had used clothes
Same!! They took none of my good quality Abercrombie jeans and other brands, but their items on the racks had holes or stains on them and were not cute at all
Nice explanation Becky. We had 3 big bins of shoes & clothes that were out of our personal closet & not worth listing. We brought them to Plato's Closet here in Gilbert, AZ, only for them to not take a one single item. I noticed while in there that I was much older than the staff or clientele so it shouldn't have been surprising, but that is all I needed to know. I'll list for cheap on Mercari or FBMP, but most likely I will donate & move on. :) Thanks again for these videos & sharing your knowledge. I watch/listen when photographing. Thank you for sharing your experience! Sometimes I wonder if they take more of you being less. I’ve also tried bringing back things they didn’t take the first time to great success. Just some thoughts!
I have experienced the same thing at my Plato's Closet in South Carolina. I guess they assume the clothes I bring in are mine. They always comment the reason they aren't taking them is because they are "mature brands". Since when are Jessica Simpson, American Eagle, Lucky Brand, Disney, Francesca's, etc. mature brands???? Ugh!
The bins is FULL of people that are buying things and selling them at Plato’s closet & buffalo exchange. It’s so wild that people are turning a quick buck instead of putting them on eBay or Poshmark.
Online reselling has died for clothing. I've been a reseller for 15 years and the last two years have been deadsville unless you give it away. I would love to know where she is selling. Poshmark is over.
I use a quick payback method. I source for .25 cents to 1.00 take the mall brands to them for a quick flip I get at least enough to pay for everything I sourced that week and then I sell what they didn’t take and the higher tier items. It has definitely helped me be able to source more as a new reseller. But they are becomings pickier so I do see how this won’t work all the time or for everyone.
I got $114 for 35 items. I've never gotten less than $60. I take in stuff that I don't plan to sell on eBay from Thred Up or the Bins. My cost of goods is $1 or less. I use Platos Closet to move overstock & old inventory. Whatever they don't take, I put in a yardsale, then donate.
Hi Becky~ I’ve been following you and some others ( mostly you, I think we live near each other based on somethings you’ve said) Here it goes I lost my husband to Glioblastoma Brain Cancer recently. During the time I was a caregiver and after his death I used shopping as a comfort I guess. We didn’t have life insurance and are running out of money. I have a teenage daughter. I have several autoimmune diseases that I am exhausted and don’t feel great for a full time job anymore. Yet I have close packing every closet and a room that’s my closet. It’s starting to get too hard to get dressed because there is so much. Lots from online boutiques Red dress, shop the mint, Lula’s etc. I want to start Poshmark or eBay but I don’t know how to start. I’ve watched your videos and I’m sure I’m making more of a big deal than it is. I’m just scared but we desperately need the money. Most items even have tags on them. I don’t know why shopping for nice things I’ll never wear comforted me during that time but it did. Where do you recommend starting? And how many items to list at first? I have watched your videos and you touch on a lot of great information. For someone who doesn’t know what to price things at and what’s popular online ( not just my taste) what do you recommend. I need to start this asap. I have one whole bedroom full of dresses and items, a walk in closet in my room and another full closet full of coats and everything in between that I’ll never where. I’m overwhelmed please help. Thank you. Jennifer
@@jenniferpell3852 dearest Jennifer. First of all, thank you for being so vulnerable and sharing your story with me. Please know that I am praying for you and your family as you heal. In regards to what you should do with all the clothing in your home, it really depends. Like I mentioned in this video, reselling is a good amount of work. It would be far easier and faster for you to take your clothes to Plato’s or even a local consignment store and get a payout right away. Are you leaving money on the table? Certainly. But it just depends on what you can handle right now. I would personally recommend a combo of the two. Bring the lower end items to platos closet or clothes mentor, whatever you have near you, and everything else you can try to list online. Everything is so slow when you first start out, but work through the discouragement of how long everything is taking knowing that you’re only going to get better. Start with the first thing you see. Snap some pictures of it, allow yourself two minutes to look at comps, and just get it listed. Sure, the first few things you might list for too much or too little. But you’ll learn. Don’t get bogged down by the details. Just do it and grow the muscles of reselling, and you’ll get better and faster. The best thing is, you already have all this inventory in your house, so now you just gotta get to work. I believe in you and am rooting for you. Please reach out if you ever need anything or have any questions.
After several trips returning with virtually everything I took to them, and getting virtually nothing for what they did keep, I am no longer taking my clothes there. They are looking for specific styles, and those change according to season or trends.
I sold high brands to them. They gave me supposedly 30% of what they would price each item, just to walk in and find that they sold my items for 100% - what they paid me - 30% plus the 70%.
Platos Closet is way too picky! I just went there last week with a big bin of clothes and they took nothing! Not even my distressed jeans or graphic tees. They were saying the clothes were outdated even though most of them were no more than 5 years old. When I went to look around at some of their other selections the clothes weren't even that cute. I was confused on why they didn't take mine because those clothes didn't look any better.🙄
I worked for Style Encore which is a sister store to Plato’s, and I only try to sell my stale inventory there. You get cents on the dollar … it’s disgusting! Also their pricing is literally from a computer system … the pricing is more of a corporate thing. We couldn’t specialty price anything.
I don’t see how you make any money off Poshmark. People are cheap as hell. I don’t have time for all that. That’s why I go to Plato’s and Uptown. But now it’s getting harder to sell there as well.
Right! Pople act like they can't spend more than $10 on that app. Like im not about to sell you my good quality $70 dress that i only wore one time for $7😂 Its annoying!
