  • When we wait for everyone to act, we just keep waiting. We want to believe if we see something, we will say something or do something. But the more people there are, the less likely we are to help someone in need. This social psychological phenomenon is called the “Bystander Effect.” Factors such as fear, ambiguity, affinity, and diffusion of responsibility determine whether a bystander acts. As an Attorney, bias and harassment trainer and a mom, Kelly Charles-Collins, shares everyday examples of the bystander effect and solutions for creating a Bystander Free Zone: Stand up, Speak up, Act up.
Lawyer, analytical free-spirit. She believes in legacy building and has guided hundreds of organizations to discover the hidden truths about their workplace. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This should be mandatory viewing for every single middle, high school and college student, every year. Well done.

There IS a lot of room between nothing and death and I need to do more! Speak up, tell someone, report. Thanks for opening my eyes to the bystander effect which I have been guilty of.

Kelly, a very powerful TEDx. An excellent overview of the bystander effect - the opposite of action is not inaction, it is indifference. Great learning.

A very important video to watch. Not only is it imperative that we absorb this message, but this particular woman expresses the whole issue about as perfectly as anyone can.

thank you! For years, I am trying to make people aware of noise on our streets: the answer I get: it does not bother me. -Despite the pain, despite the fact that noise is an 'emission', no public health agency, no doctor, no politician acknowledges: that's the way it is...

I had to call the police yesterday because I heard domestic disturbance and I was the only one that said something. I saw multiple people walk past the person's apartment while he was yelling and screaming, and they did nothing. It does go to show that the bystander effect does exist, however I was the only one that stood up for the lady. Even though later the police did nothing, I felt like I did my duty to help protect the lady.

Very thought provoking!! As a society, we have indeed become addicted to watching gruesome real time videos of mishaps & accidents. Re-socialisation is so necessary. We as adults need to teach our children better skills for tomorrow. Stop videoing and start assisting.
