BAFX OBD II Code Reader Review | OBD2 Scanner First Use

  • BAFX OBD II Code Reader Review - Does it really work? We used it for our engine light problem. I had an engine light on in my Lexus LS430. While going to Autozone is always a viable option, I prefer to diagnose these items myself since Autozone won't always know exactly what the problem is.
    The BAFX OBD II code reader worked as described. It was easy to use as you can see in the video, and after the scan it sent me online to what people did to fix the problem for the same car; can't beat a scan tool that reads you the code, clears the code and does the research for you!
    Using it with Torque Pro gives you some other features as well. I used it to check the speedometer accuracy in my LX470 and it too, worked like a charm. As I suspected the aftermarket wheels make the truck say I'm going slower than I really am!
    The BAFX OBD II Code Reader on Amazon has since been discontinued, but you can buy a newer model here that doesn't require a cell phone or app for the same price: amzn.to/3xSTvZj

    Thanks a lot for posting this video. I purchased this same exact OBD2 over a year ago and used it and it worked great. I was able to show my mechanic exactly what was wrong with my car and I knew I wasn't getting ripped off with the repairs. Since then I got a new phone, I lost the instruction book and of course the app was not on my new phone and I had completely forgotten how to use the device. my check engine light came on yesterday and I'm so glad I found your video. Thank you so much again. 😊

LOL!

      You're so right! The only issue I have with my car is that it's an 02. The 2001-2003 had some advantages over the 04-06 like ease of maintenance, but the 04-06 is hands down probably my favorite car of all time (for now anyway). I just came across this low mileaged 2002 and couldn't pass up the deal 67K for $7,500. Bought it a few months ago.

    Hi I have an important question whether the machine works on all cars like Citroen and other model cars from 2004 to 2016

    • @ToolDeals
      @ToolDeals  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question as there aren't any Citroen's in the US that I know of. But as long as it has an OBD II computer system (in the US any car from 1996 and newer), it should work just fine. So check if your system is universally OBD II compatible.

    • @ToolDeals

      Yeah, in some of my cars it's like that too. It has to do with the OBD connector in the car. In my Phaeton that thing is super shallow and if you bump it a little, it feels like it'll fall out.

    Would this device give the code if the starter or alternator was going out in a 2016 Malibu

    • @ToolDeals
      @ToolDeals  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would if you had an engine light on. But if it's your alternator your battery light will likely be on. Alternator failure is pretty sudden. They don't usually go out, they simply die then the car runs off the battery until it drains and then you're stranded.
      If it's the starter you would've heard weird noises when starting it for a while. But, sometimes, they could just die too if it wasn't a good starter. But usually, they go out gradually and you know it from loud, weird starting sounds over time.

    • @ToolDeals

      Should be compatible with any car that has an OBD 2 reader slot. In the US that's any car made after 1996. As long as you have a working FM radio in the car there shouldn't be a problem. But if it is, just return it to amazon saying that it didn't work for you.

    Is that capatible to read transmission temp correctly on 2014 nissan sentra?

    • @ToolDeals
      @ToolDeals  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question Robby. My answer is, it depends. I would reach out to BAFX for that, but in my experience, if there's a temperature sensor in there, it'll read it. You might need to purchase an app that will display the information though.
      Another thing you can do, which isn't 100% accurate, but neither are the sensors sometimes... is get a laser temp reader and point it right at the tranny pan. I know mechanics who do that with success.

    • @ToolDeals
      @ToolDeals  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vibration could be a number of things. It could be suspension related, tire related, or something with the drivetrain. Start off with the easy things and check your tires for proper inflation. Then check and see if your tires are wearing evenly and rub your hand over the tread to see if it feels lumpy.
      If all of that is normal, you may need to take it to a shop just to have them inspect the suspension and wheel bearings and check motor and transmission mounts.

      I thought you might have been a troll but sometimes I do intentionally review items I haven't used yet. I want to give you an idea of how easy or cumbersome it is to get it going. If I studied it first I'm no different than the people trying to sell you on it. I do this to be as unbiased as possible. If I struggle with it, it's probably something you don't want.
      The caveat to this is, I won't be able to test all its features.

      Can you elaborate on this? No one else seems to be reporting this issue. It's highly unlikely a simple OBD II scanner like this can mess your car up. Unless you are leaving it plugged in. In which case multiple have reported it drains the battery. Other than it's a simple scanner it should not be hurting your vehicles. Always unplug it when you're done.

      @@jamest.135 just the fact that it's cheaply made coming from who knows where. It messes up with the cars computer for me it messed up my 2004 f150 and 2014 Q50 causing them to idle hard lack of power etc. It thankfully went away on them after about a week's worth of driving

      @@jamest.135 Agreed. I accidentally left it plugged into my Lexus LX470 for months and it was just fine. It is a 2001 so it's not super modern. For modern cars it may be a problem but for mine it wasn't. I don't recommend leaving it in, but it didn't cause any problems.

      having it plugged in will not mess up your car, its just a diagnostics reader

    They're rubbish, all it'll do is read the engine check light code, and tell you your egr valve is not working correctly, you can delete the code, but only temporarily, it'll come back on after about 50-100 mile, until the underlying fault has been rectified, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for

      That's what it's supposed to do. Most won't even delete the code temporarily! So that's actually impressive. But yeah, you have to actually fix the car to be rid of the code forever.
