I have a 2002 XJR that I’m doing similar thing to. I’ve owned it for 10 years and know it’s history luckily. I love their raw feeling, they’re a fun bike to ride. I’m loving watching your videos. I’m only on episode 2 but can’t wait to see how it all goes

It will be a long haul but worth it, you can tell that the bike was just thrown together and stored, the problem that you get with some of these big old bikes is that they were poorly maintained main issues being cheep oils and not changing oil filters when changing the oil. However on the bright side these engines are fairly brutish so can take a lot of abuse before giving up and I suspect the that the lower end of the engine will have had sufficient oil left in it to keep some parts rust free. If it were me I would drop the sump plate and have a look with your new gadget see whats up inside. When you do pull out the engine have a few strong mates around as they are a very heavy lump. Dragged enough of them about to know they are a great back breaker. Enjoying watching your journey :)
I would do a compression test and potentially see if it will run first, before i pulled the top end apart. If it runs some heat cycles and a couple of oil flushes might do wonders...
Oh man that poor valve stem was crusty :O That Borescope looks very very very handy, I'll have to pick one up I think!! Those crash bungs are the biggest chonks of things I've ever seen!! Turns over very smooth by the look of them tbh!! I'm now thinking the borescope is either brilliant or terrible :D Might have ran fine with all that goo inside and you'd have never known until it blew up, but you'd have been happy for a little bit :D If I'm ever buying a bike that's "done" I want to get it off you :D

As a fellow XJR rider the bit that surprised me was that the exhaust headers came off with no broken bolts

love these bikes, what would a top end rebuild cost if you went to a garage? mine has done 25000, and i plan on keeping it forever.
Parts alone would be close to £250, labour I guess depends on where you go!
