My dear friend, just a breaf correction to your initial statment about Columbus: in the days previous to the discovery of the Americas, Spain owned nothing to Columbus in terms of wealth yet: rather the opposite, that's why he turned to the Catholic Kings in order to financiate his endeavour. In the late XV Century Castile had the most powerful fleet on the Atlantic with undisputed power of the sea and was already the wealthiest region in the Christendom together with Flanders and the north of Italy.
