Do I put their needs equal to mine, or above mine? 6. 58:48 {Are Believers “Priests”?} What are the implications of believers being called to be "A Holy Priesthood" (1 Peter 2:5)? Does this mean we need to view ourselves as priests? 7. 1:04:00 {Typology = Eisegesis?} Is it eisegesis to interpret the Old Testament as depicting Jesus? I commonly hear this objection from Jews who say Christians are "inserting their theology into our book." 8. 1:10:29 {Tongues = Vain Repetition?} Would it be fair to consider the way some churches use tongues in opposition to 1 Corinthians 14 as a form of "vain repetition" (Matthew 6:5-8)? 9. 1:19:23 {How to Know if We Should Marry Someone} What are some biblical ways to help you decide if you should marry someone? 10. 1:24:24 {Why Evangelize?} Why should we evangelize, other than because God tells us to? If it would be God's will for someone to hear about Him, wouldn't God's will happen anyway? And based on Matthew 10: 14-15, wouldn’t they be worse off?

The bigger disagreement i have is Mikes complete marriage to a type of weak foundational thinking. This level of thinking excludes much of scripture thus leaning on a type of surface milk theology. Very A-systematic. As a pastor he seems more like an Olstein personality than a Shepard of a flock. my suggestion is He needs to do more "theologically rooted" dialogue in scripture with others publicly of opposite views. not hiding "behind" a microphone in isolation. He needs to branch out his theology and poke holes live or at least ask questions live. Any well-read reformer of scripture can poke hundreds of holes in this thinking. For example - Gods work through us is not us cooperating with God. Gods work in and through us while we work out our salvation is independent and non-dependent of our effort. He causes obedience. he does not wait on our obedience. God finishes us in his work. Galatians 6 is speaking in terms of those churches and what they suffered relative to leaving Christ and returning to the law. Those that didn't can REJOICE. The work for the Lord here in Galatians is a SPICIFIC CONTEXTUAL work of a specific NATURE. And further, its not a work of will but of "who does this work". The one believing, the one who does not walk in darkness. In Christ its not a matter of IF you will do good works. Its a matter of If you are in Christ you WILL do those good works PREPAIRED before time that YOU WALK IN THEM. - That is scripture buddy. Your presentation washes this down man. Tongues are not babblings nor incoherent except to an unbeliever. Tongues are the single utterance to a mass of diverse language's that all hear from your singular known language. Thats Acts 2. that's Exegesis. Most of your entire theological basis is "well this makes sense and this does not" with some seasoned pre-suppositional thinking type attitude while ignoring history, exegesis and context of localized meanings. The single Biggest issue with you Brother Mike is you take scripture as a per-capita measure. Scriptures singular verses need to expand into multiple meanings outside its intended context as if it were poetic symbolism. Your surface reading of scripture limits your scope and binds your ability to "see" the depth of scripture. i mean this with love. You are a brother in Christ. Im a "no body" behind a keyboard lol. But im happy to dialogue with you privately or even publicly on just general exegesis. Not to win arguments or positions but to enjoy the bible with a brother in Christ. It could even be fun to try and convince each other and learn something new. I attend the Oceanside United Reformed Chruch in North County San Diego. (Oceanside).
Last year I decided to watch a couple of episodes of The Chosen. It reignited my faith. I had strayed for 15 years up to that point. I know not everyone is a fan of the show but for me personally I will always be grateful for that show. It’s so funny how the show came on, I watched an episode and IMMEDIATELY started reading my Bible. I’m active in my church again, reconnected with old church friends and am serving in a local ministry. Praise God! Also, no longer watching The Chosen.
Yeah that first season was great. I understood it was entertainment, not actual scripture, but season 3 had some questionable things and season 4 I had to stop watching. They had a whole episode legitimizing the gnostic gospel of Mary. They also made up a whole episode that never occurred in scripture. It actually made Jesus more cruel than the real Jesus. They took too much creative license. I will continue to rewatch seasons 1 and 2, because I own the dvds, but I won't continue to watch any further seasons.
@@heatherjohnson1569 having watched every season so far I'm very intrigued to know which episodes you're speaking of. Both the one confirming a gnostic gospel and where Jesus was cruel. I personally don't remember any episodes where I saw Jesus being cruel. However if it's the episode I'm thinking it might be If like to remind you that Jesus didn't spend his time on earth going from funeral to funerals, and that he only healed one person at the pool of Bethesda. If he raised everyone from the dead I doubt anyone would be crying crucify about him. Unfortunately because of people of the times expectations there was a reason why people were told to keep their by healing by him secret. And why do he raised Lazarus from the dead in a public way a week before his crucifixion. People's reaction including the religious leaders of the time show why He did this.
@@Loulizabeth season 4 the episode where Matthew comes to where Mary is hiding and asks if she is writing a gospel as well. And yes when the fiancé is murdered by a Roman and Jesus doesn't heal her. First off not even a thing that happened in scripture. I am ok with some play on events like dialogue, but that went too far for me. The last straw was the next episode where Matthew asks is Mary was writing a gospel as well and she says she is writing from her view and they leave it at that. That in itself the writers are trying to legitimize the book. It's also the very book the LGBT community has been pushing to legitimize because there is a verse in it that they feel legitimize them changing genders. I enjoyed the first 2 seasons. Season 3 was not well written I bowed out half way through season 4.
The fact that the Holy Spirit inspired four gospels and not one is something to rejoice in. The four perspectives are like the facets of a diamond each reflecting the glory of God in a different way. I'm currently teaching through Mark and I've had the joy of seeing two former Buddhists come to the Lord. I wouldn't dream of suggesting this blended gospel and they wouldn't want it. They are really seeking truth. And, they have enjoyed studying the context and looking for the themes of Mark. I'm more grateful than I can say that this blended gospel didn't fall into their hands first.
@@HiHoSilvey Can you imagine their confusion if they first read the blended text, then the actual text? It's hard for new believers to understand to begin, let alone chopping up the different gospels and trying to make them fit... so much lost in the process. Praise Jesus on the two coming to Christ!
As Mike said, I don't think it's an ideal way to read Scripture because you miss so much when read in this way. I do believe it's good however, that it may get some people to read the gospels where they might not have read a Bible at all. In a similar way, I'm grateful for The Chosen series as it got my mother to become interested in Jesus after over 20 years praying for her (she was into New Age). She became so interested, that she has begun reading the Bible and asking many questions. I could see her reading this blended Bible initially as it doesn't seem so overwhelming.
@@chriper77 That's wonderful that God answered your prayers after twenty years! I'm curious though why your Mom simply can't read the Gospel of Mark. It would be far less confusing (and shorter) without tampering with God's order. The beauty of Mark is how quickly it moves and allows the reader to easily see the great themes of the Kingdom and who Jesus is. Your mom would miss out on what the Lord wants her to learn. Taken individually, the gospels are not overwhelming. I can only imagine how mind-boggling it would be to try to pick up the thread of the story with loads of details out of context.
@@HiHoSilvey In my mum's case, she actually is reading directly from the Bible because I downloaded it onto her phone and computer :) My point is only that she was so interested in the series, that she, and others, would be more likely to read something in this format first. As it is, she is tending to get lost with the length of the Bible if I'm not there to guide her. I think it's possibly a good introduction to get people reading the Gospels. Most would hopefully move onto wanting more. I do agree with you though. I think it would have been better if The Chosen had released maybe a day by day study of just one of the Gospels as opposed to using a blended version
Mike, I don't even know if you ever read these comments but I just have to tell you a huge "Thank you." I am always sad when they end. I look forward to them all week long. I have listened to almost all of them and your Bible teaches on your web page. God bless you, my wonderful brother. I pray for you almost daily. To God be the glory.
I love the way The Chosen has Produced The Gospels, I've watched several times, waiting on 4th season to completely open on Angel Studios so I can start again, I've seen many movies throughout my life and Chosen is the best.
@@AliceSusanHarding My sister, I really hope you were joking. It's like telling someone who's going to Bible school that they are idolatrous for looking forward to a class. Or like telling someone who's looking forward to hear their pastor preach on Sunday that they are idolatrous. This is ridiculous. It's not idolatry to enjoy content and look forward to it. You don't know what this person is going through, you don't know this person's ability to understand scripture, you don't know where they are at in their spiritual walk. I absolutely loved Mike's content as a younger believer because his content helped me understand scripture like I never had before. As a mature Christian, I love his content because it is challenging, it's pushing me to make my own research, dig deeper and enjoy doing it. His passion for the Word of God is contagious! It is encouraging, and it has been for me in low moments in my faith journey. Be quick to hear, slow to speak and judge not lest you too be judged.

God draws us in so many ways. My catalyst was The Chosen. My dad died in 2022 and I had participated in Grief Share. I started being more aware of God but I wasn't in the Word daily. I was introduced to The Chosen last year and opened up the Bible, reading the Gospels. Over the past year, I've joined a local church and an online church. I have 2 more bibles in the home. I pray daily, I pray and fellowship with others daily, I participate in women's bible study at my church, I also participate in 3 online studies - John, basics, and Proverbs 31. When I saw Season 4 of The Chosen, I read the Gospels again and corresponding scriptures. It may seem "weak" that it took a TV show to ignite the fire and I wrestled with that. But I'm a movie & tv watcher. I'm a music listener. He moved a lot out of the way for me to begin my true journey (not just lip service) and I still didn't take the hint. Now I am awake, knowing I need to empty myself of self and the world. I'd never been aware of that, or how to do that. What a difference my life has been with the Word - God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. God continues to be patient and I am so grateful He never gave up on me. All thanks and Glory be to God! Ps. It's also opened up my heart to Judaism, as the Torah is a part of the Bible that we read.
I actually think this is the BEST outcome from watching shows like The Chosen, and what my hope genuinely is for the show. That it will ignite a desire to go TO scripture, and cultivate deep and meaningful personal relationships with God. I am so thankful that it did that for you!!! ❤️
I read a Short Story this week "Cosmic Christmas by Max Lucado" it's a Fictional with actual True Bible Verses, states in the last pages, made my mind wonder and opened my heart even more
I’d be curious what you mean by the Judaism bit.. Judaism is the dead, empty carcass left over from the outward showings which were pictures of Christ and His work. It is empty because it rejects Christ. Galatians and Romans are great epistles to read on this. There is no salvation outside of Christ, and therefore there is no salvation in Judaism. If you try to come to God through the Law, you will be dealt with through the Law, rather than by Grace. Please be mindful of that. The false teachers which Paul speaks of in Galatians are alive today in the form of Torah observant Christians, and they are, “subverting whole houses” to divide their trust between circumcision and Christ.
Appreciate it, brother! Please pray for my friend M., who struggles with cocain addiction and several mental health issues for 2-3 years now. He‘s a believer, but man the flesh is weak. So many people have an issue or 2 with the chosen. I enjoy the show. I've read through the bible so many times I know what's been added. I do not look at it as the bible. I say it's based on the bible. I do respect the people who won't watch it. But it has driven 2 family members to read the actual bible. I suppose others may have a different outcome. But that's my experience.
I love your balanced perspective. I watched the first eight episodes and I enjoyed it, but I’m a very visual person and so then when I was reading the Bible my brain kept visually seeing the actors and their expressions etc. That made me uncomfortable bc I don’t want an actor muddying up my understanding of Jesus, so I’ve never gone back and watched more. I do agree though that the show is totally being used by God to bring certain individuals to seek Him more. We each need to decide if it’s helpful, hurtful, or neutral to our faith.
@@seaglass.jen86 there is no issue with what you're describing. Our brains HAVE to put something there for each character and event for understanding. We cannot do nebulous. Your mind will create visuals to be able to grasp the scenario presented. As long as we realize those characterizations are not the actual biblical characters.
@@kdhander I get that and agree that even if it’s not The Chosen, my mind will fill in gaps with correct or incorrect information as I’m trying to process and understand scripture. I just didn’t feel comfortable with how overtaking the images of the show were impacting my Bible reading time.
Re: the chosen "gospels harmony": I think your points regarding the uniqueness of the accounts of each gospel, and how specifically they are written, are very significant and ought to be taken very seriously.
@@bm8962 Absolutely. I think of it like this. Believers hunger and thirst for the Word. We all need the milk of the Word. If the word is milk, then the harmony is canned/dehydrated milk. It’s not harmful per se, it’s still milk. But it is not the best kind, it is not as nourishing or optimal for promoting the growth of a believer. If we have access to the real thing, why drink this? Because “The Chosen” is emblazoned on the cover? To me, there is something wrong with that. I will not burden anyone who does read it and likes the show, but I sense something “wrong,” for the lack of a better term. Whether it is the marketing aspect, or the incomplete nature of the harmony, or a combination of the two, I do not know.
@@bm8962 Yes but this book is not meant to replace reading the separate gospel books. It’s just meant to give you an overall picture of Jesus ministry. It’s not meant for Bible study, it’s more like a devotional.

Though I grew up in the church and gave my life to Christ, I had a hard time imagining the people and stories in the Bible as truth. The Chosen changed that for me. I’ve since read the Bible all the way through, and I’m now going through it chronologically. I know that The Chosen isn’t word for word the Bible, and they say that at the beginning of the show, but I’m sure I’m not the only person who has grown in their faith from The Chosen, which in my eyes makes it a good thing.

@nicoledickerson9516 I totally agree, and I think we need to have discernment in all that we consume, but, for me, The Chosen has helped me learn more about God through reading the Bible. I bought this Chosen book last year, hoping it would help me understand the chronology of events better. But it didn't flow at all, which ultimately helped me understand that not all the gospel authors were recording history the way we think of it today. In those days it was understood that you might shuffle things around and even combine multiple events into one recorded event.
If you get a chronological Bible, it will give you all the scriptures in chronological order. But won’t combine them all together the way this chosen book is doing.
We need to be very careful and mindful of where our heart is. As a follower of Christ I need to make sure everything I do in Christ is infact as a follower of Jesus and not a fan. I heard the call in a time of great suffering and thank you Jesus for all you've given me. I hope people are not grabbing this book from a place of fan base, this isn't a collectible like sport memorabilia its the word of God and man has no business changing it, for any reason. It's like going to a church because they have great music. If you're not going for worship stay home.. it's a heart thing... be mindful.. and above all things, GLORY TO GOD..
Mike, that was a great, balanced look into the Chosen Harmonized version. I love the emphasis you had on the fact that each gospel has an order and sequencing that is beautifully balanced and yet if we look at this ‘Harmonized’ version as an addendum to our Bible it could yield some interesting perspective. But all in all, the order and cadence of each gospel truly is Divine. Thank you!!!🙏🏻

My personal experience with the Chosen was right when I gave my life to Christ. And what it did for me is dig into my bible! I saw the miracles and "Wait, that happened in the Bible ??" And it brought me great joy to learn about Jesus. The Chosen tv show is not to replace reading the Gospel. Personally, it did what they tried to accomplish, get the Gospel out to people who otherwise hadn't read it.

I was done with The Chosen when they depicted Jesus struggling to write the Sermon on the Mount, in fact, requiring help from Matthew to write it. Nope.
@@Cod3Thr33 it's a direct violation of John 12:49. I'm not a big fan of the New Living Translation but it does make it clear: "I don't speak on My own authority. The Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it." This isn't a minor error. It's a huge misunderstanding of the incarnation and the relationship between God the Father and the Son. And then there was his comment to Mary when she told him how proud she was. Jesus responds with something like, "better wait till you see if I mess it up." Yep, really. This "Jesus" said that.
@@HiHoSilvey, I didn't make the John 12:49 connection, but you're absolutely right. It just "felt" wrong to me in a way that I was absolutely certain of, but you actually made the connection with Scripture. Excellent observation!
Good for you. Too many people try to dismiss criticism of the show just because the show is “about Jesus,” as if that automatically makes it good. How is that different than treating our faith like Hollywood treats mythological stories like Clash of the Titans? Or an example that cuts closer to home, that dreadful Moses movie with Russel Crowe. They change things for the sake of “the story.” Misrepresenting Jesus for the sake of entertainment should be the most offensive thing to us.
#10 I’ve been there with those doubts, not wanting to make someone incur greater judgement bc of my sharing. My advice for you is to be guided by the simple truths- it’s the GOOD news- necessary for one’s salvation, it’s my responsibility (and privilege) to share it, and it’s God’s job to save. Recently I got to share the gospel with my brother and it was such a joy and blessing. We gotta keep the right perspective so we don’t miss out on these opportunities.

That was my thought too. I feel like Mike “discernment ministried” his take on that point. He misrepresented what they meant by “seamless”. To be charitable, they just meant you can read it, and it will be coherent. The literal point is that it pulls from all four gospels, so it’s part of the “seamless” point that it DOES contain what Mike calls “seams”. The point is that the “seams” are hidden in a coherent narrative. Mike was a little off on this one. The book seems decent for a devotional, as far as I can tell.

From time to time, I have enjoyed reading harmony of the gospels that keep the texts in separate columns so I am able to compare the accounts. I am a pastor and very aware and appreciative of the themes and differences. I have never really read "seamless" versions, but I can see your perspective on missing out on the themes, etc. thank you for this, Mike.
I love the Word of God and have read and studied it over and over again for 50 years. I turn to the Gospels continually in order to know my Lord and Savior. I am an avid fan of The Chosen as I have found it represents the Jesus I know more closely than any other theatrical attempt to date, and I love the expanding of the biblical stories to bring imaginative and plausible "what if"s type back stories, connections, etc. but never EVER would I replace my Bible with this show! I purchased this compiled gospel from The Chosen as just another way to support the show. And I pick it up occasionally for light, inspirational reading. It has NOT, nor will it ever, replace the four individual Gospels for me.
The Chosen is a telling of the story of Jesus I liked very much. It is an attempt to show that there was more to the life and times of Jesus than just the roughly two weeks worth of narrative we have in the Gospels. There is a fair amount of poetic license to be sure, but as much as the fill in's are purely fictional, it shows that there was much more of the day to day mundane in the 3 years of Jesus ministry. I think it's an excellent show. The Reese Chronological Bible has also blended the Gospels in it's Bible.
@@snorman1911 True, and is there anything wrong with that? I was sharing with my still Mormon daughter about what I learned about Nicodemus at our new little Bible church. She said oh yes and his wife was so whatever. I wondered, what? And we checked. There is no wife of Nicodemus in the Bible. My daughter gets her Bible from the Chosen and thinks it’s all real. I do not believe Mormons are reading their Bibles in any way significantly, Chosen or not. I didn’t for 65 yrs. I am just now learning about it and am blown away. Praise God.
This is why I couldn't watch the show myself (only got through one or two episodes), because I connect so strongly with cinema and didn't want to risk skewing my biblical interpretation by remembering their portrayal of a "character" or framing of a sequence of events. I wished I could watch it for the bits that were totally true to Scripture, but I didn't feel settled about it. ...I've had many dear friends over the years who are Mormon who have always weighed heavily on my heart. I praise God for all you are learning from the Word and I pray that through your conversations and the help of the Holy Spirit that your daughter finds the Lord ❤️🙏🏼
I pray your current love for the word will seep into your daughters heart. That scripture would just pour out of your mouth as you speak. Hopefully that will give you patience on the hard days when you really fear for her eternity. Blessings to you, Numbers 6: 24-26
I can't stress enough the truth of your words Pastor Mike. Thank you I have never heard that so clearly pinpointed. And to add, the Man must know before marriage because hoping to know doesn't make for a good marriage. sacrificial love is a must. The woman who marries as well must respect the man. I'm not stating husband or wife because believe me it's very difficult after. If you can't show it before there is good reason for it. Stop and soberly ask yourself why you can't before.
I've owned a book called 'The Life of Chrust in Stereo' for nearly 20 years. It's the four Gospels harmonised. I've found it helpful to get an idea on the chronology of events, such as when did Peter first meet Jesus and begin to follow Him. Its put together by a scholar that took over 20 yyears to produce it. Its not a replacement of reading the originals for me, but i do find it helpful.
Man. Thank you. I so appreciate the time you take to actually look into what they’ve produced, and the time and care you take in explaining the difference between something that is “sub-optimal”, rather than something that may “lead you astray”. Super helpful.
Thank you for question 6. I had that same question over the weekend and came to the same answer you did but it’s nice to have confirmation. God bless you and protect you Mike.
Love and appreciate you Pastor Mike. Your teaching always helps to keep me on the right path. I Love and appreciate the creators of The Chosen, because of the show, I no longer feel like a stranger to the roots of my Christianity. ❤️

I had a copy of the Chosen Blended Harmony of the Gospels. It's standard CSB as far as I could tell, and I think it was prepared for Lenten reading with 40 readings if I recall correctly. They weren't very popular. The branding and marketing material around it leaned heavily toward what we might call devotional use, and I think that's how people who buy it and use it will generally use it.
Good rational comment. Thanks for some sanity in this super spiritual group of commenters. Mike doesn’t bother me, but some of the commenters drive me off with their rigid religiosity. Not every one by far, but some. >whew
@@dillarddillard-p4e Mike's comments on it are pretty good in my opinion. I picked it up and read some of it, but found that it is inferior to just going through the four Gospels one-by-one instead due to how the formatting works. Still, as a Lenten devotional it's not necessarily the worst thing on earth. More of a "yeah, this maybe didn't live up to our hopes" with some people who could really benefit from increased exposure to Scripture getting something from it.
Thank you for the extensive research you do to give an accurate presentation of God’s word. Bravo 👏🏻 On a personal note to your personal first question: “Those who have ears to hear, let him hear.” Amen!
The thing people need to understand about The Chosen (tv series) is that it is just really good historical-fiction. Is it better than most Hollywood Jesus shows/movies? Probably. Is it still a multi-media production that adds and subtracts things from the gospels? Yes. Know what you're getting into. If it's not literally the Bible, then anything outside of it is someone's interpretation. That said, the fact Mormons are involved behind the scenes is a valid eyebrow raise.
@ryantobler7607 Having Mormons in charge behind the scenes is like having the Pepsi CEO make a new drink for Coca-Cola. Tastes good now, but it immediately raises questions and concerns. Different companies (religions) and different agendas (beliefs), but both want to promote their brand (faith). So, the question is, will Mormon theology sneakily pop up in the series.
Because Mormons are the ones in charge behind the scenes like he stated, and they also might want to push their beliefs which are far from Christian beliefs.
I'm not sure I've thanked you for your teaching on the gospels and the bible in general, making it so approachable for even those of us who have no background or experience with Christians. Found your videos a few years ago and recently was baptized in spirit and later found a church and had my water baptism and proclaimed my faith in Jesus. I can not give you all the credit of course; ) I just wanted to thank you for being Jesus's wingman, calling out to us with Him, to us who are lost to return and find peace with Him.
Love your channel, Mike! That said I'm sure you know that some of the producers of the Chosen are Mormon friends of Dallas Jenkins...I watched a little but was totally unhappy with a lot of misrepresentation. Just my dime! Thank you for all you do!

I have this book. For each day there is a scripture index in the back of the book that tells you where all of the scriptures came from that are used for that day. Each day's reading is a few pages long, list topical headings. You can go to the back of the book to the index to see what scriptures are actually being quoted. In the introduction by Steve Laube, he says this: "The text of the four Gospels, in their entirety, is the basis of this book without repeating identical parallel sentences. This work is not intended to replace the scripture as presented in their original form. In fact, there is an index in the back of the book for each of the sections as an encouragement for the reader to look further into the text itself." I have utilize this feature quite a bit as I have read through the book. I have really enjoyed looking these up in their original context, and it has definitely encouraged me to read my Bible.
Reading the four gospels at once like that is like eating four completely different cuisines all blended together and expecting it to taste even better.
4 audiences, 4 purposes, 4 portraits, 4 emphases. Matthew was writing to the Jews. Mark, to the Romans, Luke to the Hellenists/greeks, John to the Greek/Roman world.
I disagree. Putting them all at once is like what Luke did. He gathered information and put it into his book. His sources have different perspectives and backgrounds but he put it neatly into a book.
@@retrictumrectus1010 I can see where I can be a help just to see how things fall chronologically, but I kindly disagree on the whole. The four gospels had a specific things they wanted to say alongside basic gospel of Salvation through Jesus Christ. Also, Luke was led by the Holy Spirit and what he put in his gospel, and he did not put everything in it. Putting them together like that is like watching a movie with four different primary plots that come together with different perspectives and then suddenly veer off in a different directions; on top of that countless subplots are happening that one would have to keep track in order to make sense of the whole picture. The very fact that the gospels begin at different points and with different subject matters, emphasize or exclude things along the way, and end at different points tells you a whole lot too. Also, the book of John is not completely chronological. And that was for a reason too.
If you want a blended harmony that flows, read the Diatessaron. Great read. It was one of the most popular versions of the gospels in antiquity up very late. I suspect this is why the Qur'an refers to the gospels in the singular as, _The Gospel._ Even though the Nestorians did shift away from it to identify with the Roman world more easily, it still held out. In like the 1200's, a Nestorian monk translated it from Syriac into Arabic, that's how popular it was even 700 years after they started shifting away from it.
I was a fan girl of The Chosen. But having watched four seasons I no longer am. The show was instrumental in reviving my faith in a loving God but as I have been growing in maturity and in my love of Scripture my love of the show has decreased so much so that I cannot watch it. The extra biblical story lines have begun to distort the character of Christ as he was on Earth. So in my opinion you are not missing anything by not watching it. P.S. I'm now memorizing scripture and I am watching your Mark series.
Same for me. The show was a big reason I came back to Christ and opened my Bible again after 40+ years, praise God. But I stopped watching midway through season 3 BECAUSE I recognized the discrepancies and "additions" and the marketing became intolerable. As a "baby" Christian I didn't want to be confused by the show's content. I appreciate what I think their initial intention was but it's gone way off the rails. Praise God I found Him again though. 💜
The show made Jesus as an approximate of the truth. Jesus speaks in probabilities which He never did in scripture. Not once does He refer to odds in scripture. In the chosen, their depiction of Christ constantly referred to odds and possibilities. It is a human approximation of truth. Always accumulating knowledge but never arriving at the Truth.
I was very iffy about it at first but, after reading that it wasn’t to replace reading the Bible rather to tell the story of Jesus and still seek the scripture with it. I purchased it with an open mind. So far I see what they were trying to do and I think it would be good for new believers to be introduced more to Christ.
I hope you do end up watching the rest of the show as I would love to know what you think. Imho, once you get to episode 5 it really pulls you into the characters lives. Much of it extra biblical of course, but it really helps you "see" what the actual disciples lives might have been like and adds such a richness to the actual text. My son was 14 when we started to binge watching the show during the covid lockdown and he loved it just as much as I did. The story of Nicodemus and John the Baptist was his favorite. We'd talk about the episodes and then look up references in the Bible. Really sweet memories I will cherish forever. Now he's about to turn 19 and still watches new episodes with me, but most importantly he is still reading his Bible. I know this is the goal of Dallas Jenkins, to point you towards actual scripture and it did that for both of us. Grateful for your ministry, Mike!
My heart was happy reading your story. What a treasure that is to have with your son and one that he will cherish always. Thanks for sharing your testimony 😊
If it’s “extra biblical” it does not help you “see what the actual disciples lives might have been like” God gave us his word. We don’t need to imagine his disciples as autists, etc. this can only end badly.
Jenkins has made it abundantly clear many times that The Chosen does not replace the true stories or the Scripture. It’s entertainment with strong Biblical storyline. Watched the series 5 times.
I love this! The chosen has done something similar with my family. We read the scripture together and talk about the difference between what we know is real and true and what scripture says verses what the show story is. It’s been a great tool for teaching my kids (9 and 12 now) how to measure what you hear and see to the truth of scripture. It brings up great conversations and I hope when they are 19 I can say they are still reading the Bible too!
Mike, I watch you and Tovia Singer both very frequently. I like both of you. He does have some blind spots and specific interpretations that are biased, but I would gently say, you have just as many and as serious of blind spots in your own different places. I enjoy both of you even though I agree with neither of you 100%, because I feel you are both honest and reasonable in your respective approaches. You are worth listening to. So is he, in my estimation. It was unexpected to hear you speak about him. I really do wish the two of you could have a conversation even if not a debate-format. I would love to hear that.
I have a chronological bible that pretty much does something similar with the Gospels except it shows clearly the parts taken from each book. I haven't watched the Chosen but I'd love to read the Gospels in their blended harmony format. I'd find it easier to read all 4 Gospels straight through. I wouldn't use it for deep Bible study though.
What parts are taken from each gospel? Are there early manuscripts that prove there were parts removed from each gospel so that what is currently available are incomplete records/books?
Mike, Mike, Mike. You are right, many people who love the Chosen have not read the Bible. the Chosen very boldly says the show is not the Bible it is to direct you to the Bible. While all of the draw backs you mention are true for those of us who love the Bible, who have been reading it and studying it for years will notice those things, I don't think this book is meant for us. And I don't think the audience this book is written for, those who have not read the Bible, or at least those who are not familiar with it will notice. Nor do I think that audience would understand the nuances you mentioned even if they read the gospels individually and in order. To me it's more like watching a movie adapted from a novel that necessarily cuts out much of the story. One knows the story, but not necessarily all of the nuances of the story. I do think those nuances are important in the gospels, but I think the point of this book is to familiarize the readers with the gospel story and how amazing it is hoping to whet their appetite for reading all of the gospels individually. And while I agree that the Bible is inspired, perhaps even inspired in a certain order of words, I think that point loses its importance knowing that the books includeded, the order in which they are included, and their translation from languages whose words can often only be approximated, and whose syntax is very different from that of English. All of that being said, let me say this, Thank you for dispelling all of the crazy rumors about this book. The Chosen has helped me to reconcile with Jesus, a story too long to tell here, so I know and treasure that it can and has helped many others.
Pay no attention to the nasty comment TDLR. You make a good point. If it draws people to Jesus and make them want to read the Bible, then cool. Even secular things can reach people because GOD is using them. He certainly has spoken to me in that way. Soooo, great comment!
A few Proverbs come to mind... "Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. ... The first to speak in court sounds right-until the cross-examination begins." [Pro 18:13, 17 NLT] Thanks again, Mike! 💓👍
In reference to question 10....read Romans 10:14-15. It talks about how people can't come to faith if they have not heard. Also, Mike, thank you for your ministry. I listen very regularly and enjoy the insights you share. I especially loved the "sandwich" analogy you gave about the gospel of Mark today. It's something I hadn't noticed before. I've also shared some of your apologetics videos with my kids and friends, as your words/teaching are more articulate than I am. God bless you and this ministry and produce great fruit from it.
When my son was hospitalized, I bought the chosen gospel book to keep my mind occupied while he was in surgery. As a Bible school teacher who has read the Bible, I found it an easy read. I can see the appeal and it's worth buying for a new convert. It doesn't replace the Bible but its like the Cliff notes on the life if Jesus.
It’s a nice sentiment but you can see the “seams” (as Mike puts it), and you can be discerning with your reading. In contrast, a beginner would simply read and take in everything as they are told. Later, if they chose to read the Bible (which some won’t, because they see books like this as the “easy to digest” versions of the Bible), they will be confused.
I think if the Gospels were meant to be “easier to read,” it simply would have been “easier to read.” I just don’t think it’s particularly useful when we have the actual Gospels that are given to us by God for the purpose of teaching. It’s not just redundant in function, but inefficient in practice. I don’t think I’d give this to a new believer because they need the milk of the Word. They aren’t ready to chew their own food yet. This book is not milk, at least not the real thing. At most, it’s a substitute, but why use a substitute when you have the real thing?
Even in college the cliff notes were the understudy to the actual book. Thats okay with man made wisdom. Gods wisdom..... Nope i want the full monty! ❤

I totally see how it would come across that way to those who know the Word deeply. It is my understanding that this entire production (the chosen) is a way for people who do not know Jesus, have never met Jesus, have never stepped into a church or have never picked up a Bible. I can remember when I was a young believer; I watched and read everything that was about Jesus. I believe it was Holy Spirit that directed what I was learning. What I put in my eyes and ears drew me nearer and nearer to the Word of God and as I got into ALL the DIFFERENT bibles trying to learn-God also directed my path in what was the right Bible or Bibles to search through. In a very short period of time, God took me from milk to meat and then I found you (Mike). Now I study into the deep things of the Holy Scriptures. Just thought I’d share. 🙌🏼🕊️🐑🩸✝️❤️🔥🔥
Well, I know what you're saying and God does use certain christian shows and movies to lead people to God, but the Chosen is HEAVILY COMPROMISED. Im the best friend of the creator of the BIGGEST DOCUMENTARY OF EXPOSING THE CHOSEN called "Chosen Exposen." You can see it on TH-cam it has 170,000 views. You will be really shocked at what you find and how heavily catholic and Mormonism influenced this show is! Satan can even infiltrate "christian" things that have good ambitions and introduce little leaven that destroys the whole bread. The Chosen is EXACTLY that leaven. The biggest problems is making Jesus a crybaby where he cries on Mary's shoulder, he needs Matthew to finish his "sermon on the mount" , he won't heal one of his disciples Matthew for some reason , he won't heal others, and his divinity is decreased to make his humanity so relatable to everybody else that it creates a funny caricature of Jesus who's too goofy. I'm serious. Also Dallas Jenkins said that his mormon friends believe in the same Jesus as Christians! Which is total blasphemy. I Also just RELEASED A VIDEO HERE ON MY CHANNEL before Mike's video where I GO OVER THE CHOSEN BIBLE and show you more information that Mike didn't have time to get into!
Thanks pastor Mike. Always love your content and biblical/Christ centered approach. IMO, harmonizing is a translation upon and translations translation. The context, literary devices, themes, and nuances fall through the cracks
@MikeWinger So, just like someone may watch a movie on the life of Jesus, they can read a book of the life of Jesus, with the benefit of it being directly from a reputable translation of the Bible. Does it replace personal bible study, no. Is it acceptable reading of the life and ministry of Jesus yes.
I like how they humanized all the characters. I don't like how they created different scenarios. The show that i adore the most, so far only has the pilot. They humanize Moses, Aaron, Chisisi, and all the characters in the most delightful ways. It's called The Promised Land. I hope you get a chance to watch & comment on it.
I think many of us have encountered harmonies in our study, and maybe tried to piece together our own. It gets tricky in some passages that may or may not be recounting the same event, large sections in John that deal with theology not seen in other gospels, etc. I just eventually came down with recommending Mark for a fast moving short account, John for some deep revelation not addressed in the other gospels. Ultimately read all of it, they're separated for a reason and probably should be read as we received them: Four accounts, each written as intended
Regarding our involvement with evangelizing to others: Good doesn't need our help, but He asks for it. It's a privilege and honor to be invited by our creator to help in the creation. This is what we do when we have children, care for the planet, and spread the truth about Christ to others. One could insist that since He has chosen you to be His you should pay back the favor to others, but really it is honoring to Him to be a part of inviting others to His gift of salvation.
in Q:4 you do well to explain the usage of the word "spirit" problem is our gnostic/dualism understanding of things and theology, we relate anything "spirit" as non physical "ethereal" in nature when it doesn't mean that
Context of Scripture is key to understanding the true meaning of the text and protects us from the outrageous misapplications that are prevalent in many churches today. Hard pass on The Chosen harmonization of the gospels.
I might have missed part of this in the introduction as there are always so many interruptions in real life when I try to watch your videos. I agree with your introduction and positives on this since so many people do watch it and may not read the Bible, this is a good way to get them to get actual versus without the fiction part of the historical fiction that they might not otherwise get. I think it would be a good idea if it would be considered a primer. That word seems to be some thing from the early 1900s as the beginning of elementary school education they had their primer. And the primer basically would give enough information to spark your curiosity to get the whole thing and learn more as you go along. So even though I was not happy with so many liberties taken during this show as it progressed, the Chosen, I do appreciate that it will help a lot of people value that common every day people with lots of issues can come together and make the world a better place through their faith and belief in Jesus. My biggest concern was people wouldn’t read the Bible. This I think would be the next step into getting actual Bible verses of the gospel, even though cut and pasted, and hopefully lead them to the next step of serious studies.
You said it wouldn't send me toward Roman Catholicism, but then you started describing it, and I started to understand why they burned people at the stake for unauthorized translations of the Bible. Joking aside, I hope God's grace shines through this. I can see how it would be helpful, but I don't think I could stomach trying to read it personally, though I come from a literary background and so all the stitching together would really bother me. It's not for me, though I'm sure Christ will use it for someone. Thank you for the video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns. Christ is King!
Dear Mike, I appreciate your teaching and I am listening to you over and over again. But the Chosen are away to Show people the Gospel. And that IS what they are hoping to do. I believe God IS using the Chosen and Show the Love God has for His Children. IT will make Seekers learn more and more. IT IS so sad that the Seekers are Not taugt in so many regions of the World. So I pray, Hope and Sense, the Chosen IS Catering to the Seekers of God WHO have No teachers, because there are so few teachers.... You are definitely one of my favourite teachers. But I thank the Lord fir the Chosen, because those lost due to a lack of teachers God could use the Chosen, If He choses. What do you think?
If it teaches J esus in full(not just God is love) then ok. If it teaches people to understand and come to a humbled state, realizing they are a sinner in need of the savior then ok. If this teaching is of the real gospel that saves soul. Then ok.... But...is this doing that?

To get right down to it. If it isn’t a Bible, not titled as such. Then it’s perhaps at worst is a badly written Bible guide reference something or other. Mike, excellent job as always. There is no controversy here. Some are enjoying the chosen for its entertainment value, I am. Others are going to be sanctimonious purist who are going to see evil everywhere rather some things being badly done.
The globe is a lie of man. On the second day Yahweh made one thing, His firmament. On day 4 He created the sun, moon and stars and placed them within the firmament.
@@jtd3421 I find this very important. It puts many things into perspective. What we believe and who we follow is the foundation of our entire lives, on Earth and after death.
Its not that different from what i had to do in New Testament class in college. We had to create a timelime for the 4 Gospels, and write out the verse numbers in chronological order. So the miracles, and signs, were in order of when done.
Maybe this isn't comparable, but the little girls I watch have a toddlers bible. It cracks me up. It is very shortened. Very! They know it's not The Bible. But the snippets of stories make them ask questions. As they've gotten older, they want to know more. I don't think there's anything wrong with what The Chosen has done. They are clear it's not The Bible. It can get people asking questions. I have a copy of "The Story." Which is the entire Bible put into order, so it's one continuous story. I love it! I also know it's not what I'm grabbing when I have questions. Some people just can't handle when things are done a tiny bit different than they think it should be done. That feels like pride.
Granted, I haven't read this book and I haven't seen all of the Chosen (currently my wife and I are about to watch season 3 but I have been too busy with work to have the time). However, from what I can gather, if you see these things for what they are/they are intended to be then they have value provided we don't try to use them to replace scripture or we are mindful that they aren't scripture in totality. This book is an aid for someone to try to see scripture flowing. The Chosen show is a representation of Gospel events as entertainment but not itself scripture. Neither are going to give the full picture but they have their place in the wider context. Just so long as people do not use them to replace scripture or try to read scripture through this lense moving forward.
For years, Ive thought i have understood the Gospel until it came with the word that Christ is Holy, Holy just as the OT describes God. Portrayal of Christ in careless way is already watering down of the scriptures. The old benhur movie in portraying Christ is by far the best as they never showed Christ face.
Question Time Stamps for Quick Reference:
0:00 - Intro
1. 0:10 {The Chosen’s New Book} Did The Chosen make their own Gospel?
2. 29:00 {Our Attitude when God Works Through Us} Is it sinful for a Christian to be pleased when God enables them to do a good work (Isaiah 64:6, Galatians 6:4)?
3. 34:27 {Is YHWH Biased?} How do we know YHWH isn't just BIASED with His Word (as one would be in any form of competition), when God says "There is no other, beside Me there is no God" in Isaiah 45:5 or "I know not any" in Isaiah 44:8?
4. 43:27 {Did Christ Become the HS?} Does 1 Corinthians 15: 45 mean that Christ became the Holy Spirit? I was taught this growing up, but it seems like Modalism to me now. I can’t break from this reading of the verse since I left that group.
5. 54:30 {How to Love Your Neighbor As Yourself} What does it mean to love your neighbor as yourself? Do I put their needs equal to mine, or above mine?
6. 58:48 {Are Believers “Priests”?} What are the implications of believers being called to be "A Holy Priesthood" (1 Peter 2:5)? Does this mean we need to view ourselves as priests?
7. 1:04:00 {Typology = Eisegesis?} Is it eisegesis to interpret the Old Testament as depicting Jesus? I commonly hear this objection from Jews who say Christians are "inserting their theology into our book."
8. 1:10:29 {Tongues = Vain Repetition?} Would it be fair to consider the way some churches use tongues in opposition to 1 Corinthians 14 as a form of "vain repetition" (Matthew 6:5-8)?
9. 1:19:23 {How to Know if We Should Marry Someone} What are some biblical ways to help you decide if you should marry someone?
10. 1:24:24 {Why Evangelize?} Why should we evangelize, other than because God tells us to?

Welcome back! Thank you for sharing brother!

@@AliceSusanHarding My sister, I really hope you were joking. It's like telling someone who's going to Bible school that they are idolatrous for looking forward to a class.
Now if you learn what the Bible says you will find that The Chosen is heretical, blasphemous and sacrilegious and it needs to be renounced!
I actually think this is the BEST outcome from watching shows like The Chosen, and what my hope genuinely is for the show. That it will ignite a desire to go TO scripture, and cultivate deep and meaningful personal relationships with God.
I am so thankful that it did that for you!!! ❤️

Absolutely.

Thanks Mike for serving our Lord and his people . Onward and upward fellow pilgrim .

Mike, that was a great, balanced look into the Chosen Harmonized version. The Chosen tv show is not to replace reading the Gospel. Personally, it did what they tried to accomplish, get the Gospel out to people who otherwise hadn't read it.

It's a huge misunderstanding of the incarnation and the relationship between God the Father and the Son.

99% of the show is poetic license.

This is why I couldn't watch the show myself (only got through one or two episodes), because I connect so strongly with cinema and didn't want to risk skewing my biblical interpretation by remembering their portrayal of a "character" or framing of a sequence of events. sacrificial love is a must. The woman who marries as well must respect the man. I'm not stating husband or wife because believe me it's very difficult after. If you can't show it before there is good reason for it. Stop and soberly ask yourself why you can't before.

Bravo 👏🏻
On a personal note to your personal first question:
“Those who have ears to hear, let him hear.” Amen!
Why does "Mormons being involved behind the scenes" bother you? There are a lot of Christian and non Christians behind the scenes. It's a TV show.
@FirstNameLastName-rs6qo that be said of any any religious group involved. Why Mormons specifically?
Mormons believe that Jesus isn't God. Jesus being God in the flesh is the only way to understand what he does in the Bible.
Because Mormons are the ones in charge behind the scenes like he stated, and they also might want to push their beliefs which are far from Christian beliefs.
I learned how to study the Bible from your Mark series
I'm not sure I've thanked you for your teaching on the gospels and the bible in general, making it so approachable for even those of us who have no background or experience with Christians.
Found your videos a few years ago and recently was baptized in spirit and later found a church and had my water baptism and proclaimed my faith in Jesus. I can not give you all the credit of course; ) I just wanted to thank you for being Jesus's wingman, calling out to us with Him, to us who are lost to return and find peace with Him.

@skpbryant thx but I don't need your recommendation..I read the Bible regularly.. no self righteous comments needed. 👍
I have this book. For each day there is a scripture index in the back of the book that tells you where all of the scriptures came from that are used for that day. Each day's reading is a few pages long, list topical headings. You can go to the back of the book to the index to see what scriptures are actually being quoted.
In the introduction by Steve Laube, he says this:
"The text of the four Gospels, in their entirety, is the basis of this book without repeating identical parallel sentences. This work is not intended to replace the scripture as presented in their original form. In fact, there is an index in the back of the book for each of the sections as an encouragement for the reader to look further into the text itself."
I have utilize this feature quite a bit as I have read through the book. I have really enjoyed looking these up in their original context, and it has definitely encouraged me to read my Bible.
YOU HAVE SUCCEEDED! Great commentary! ❤
Guess I just missed it. No clue on the questions but keep it up Mike. You surely have much treasure in heaven. And happy Friday yall!
1:02:17 - 1:03:16 Whoops! 😂🤣 All that enthusiastic gesturing really makes me wish I could have heard what Mike was saying!
Reading the four gospels at once like that is like eating four completely different cuisines all blended together and expecting it to taste even better.
thats a great analogy
ya they're taking four completely different personalities and perspectives and blending them together. not a great idea IMO
4 audiences, 4 purposes, 4 portraits, 4 emphases. Matthew was writing to the Jews. Mark, to the Romans, Luke to the Hellenists/greeks, John to the Greek/Roman world.
Haven't seen the video yet but I actually liked reading the chronological bible (ESV) that puts all of scripture chronologically.
Hey Mike, thank you for your honesty amd opinion on these topics. Great video.
Very delicate, very fair assessment of the volume, it seems. Nice work, Mike!
It’s a movie to entertain and if it gets people interested in learning about Jesus then good for them.
No, because it's nothing to do with the real Jesus. It's an occultist actor.
TV series
At some point they will turn against the truth after they lead people close to the cliff.
Well done. Keep on speaking out against it because many are being deceived by this blasphemous show.
I think you have explained exactly how I feel about the Chosen! 😂
@@nancybr2536 yes, praise God! He can use anything to bring us to Him ❤️
The show made Jesus as an approximate of the truth. Jesus speaks in probabilities which He never did in scripture. Not once does He refer to odds in scripture. In the chosen, their depiction of Christ constantly referred to odds and possibilities. It is a human approximation of truth. Always accumulating knowledge but never arriving at the Truth.
Thnk u Mike. This was so so good. Blessed by your utube ministry
I was very iffy about it at first but, after reading that it wasn’t to replace reading the Bible rather to tell the story of Jesus and still seek the scripture with it. I purchased it with an open mind. So far I see what they were trying to do and I think it would be good for new believers to be introduced more to Christ.
Love your Mark series and the Marken sandwich is fascinating.
I have watched his Mark study like three times and it’s so fruitful! Helped me so much!!!! Highly recommend! 😊
@@AlmostaGreenAcre-zs5eu Aw, thank you so much. Really appreciate your sweet comment.
If it’s “extra biblical” it does not help you “see what the actual disciples lives might have been like”
God gave us his word.
The show is good for what it is a show based on the Bible. The book overall does tell a smooth story. It’s not perfect but it blends the gospels well.
I think I’ll buy it. Sounds interesting. Since watching the Chosen I’ve read the Bible in its entirety. It will be fascinating to read this.
Tovia Singer is a BLATANT heretic. You “liking” him utterly proves you are too.
Don't see The Chosen as being very controversial. Just seems like folks always need something to get worked up about.
Which Jesus? The real Jesus or Jonathan Roumie, the fake Jesus who is an occultist imposter?

Cliff notes????
Really???
😮
It’s a nice sentiment but you can see the “seams” (as Mike puts it), and you can be discerning with your reading. In contrast, a beginner would simply read and take in everything as they are told. Later, if they chose to read the Bible (which some won’t, because they see books like this as the “easy to digest” versions of the Bible), they will be confused.
Why not read the Bible?

Thanks for your ministry and I am learning how to 'bible', truly you are a blessing to me, God bless you!
@MikeWinger
So, just like someone may watch a movie on the life of Jesus, they can read a book of the life of Jesus, with the benefit of it being directly from a reputable translation of the Bible.
That 10 second intro was deeply profound. Thank you for that. 🙂
Another great one, question 10 used to perplex me too, thank you
I think many of us have encountered harmonies in our study, and maybe tried to piece together our own.
Ordered my copy yesterday! Thanks for the referral Mike!!
Like any well written and accurate bible (not saying this is one, but the gospels all together sounds helpful), its a tool that can benefit anyone.
This was a great live, thank you.
in Q:4 you do well to explain the usage of the word "spirit"
problem is our gnostic/dualism understanding of things and theology, we relate anything "spirit" as non physical "ethereal" in nature when it doesn't mean that
Context of Scripture is key to understanding the true meaning of the text and protects us from the outrageous misapplications that are prevalent in many churches today. Hard pass on The Chosen harmonization of the gospels.
Currently watching the chosen. So far i think its great. It doesnt (so far) seem to trade on anything at all theologically
If you knew what scripture said, you wouldn't say that. The show is blasphemous. Where is your fear of God recommending it to others?
It definitely doesn’t depict scripture accurately. Just beware that you know the difference between the Word and the show’s additions/ replacements.
@@AliceSusanHarding you’re the problem.
There is actually a novelization of the series by Jerry B Jenkins. But it’s clearly marked as a fictional.
Dear Mike, I appreciate your teaching and I am listening to you over and over again. But the Chosen are away to Show people the Gospel. And that IS what they are hoping to do.

If it teaches people to understand and come to a humbled state, realizing they are a sinner in need of the savior then ok.
If this teaching is of the real gospel that saves soul.

@@jtd3421 I find this very important. It puts many things into perspective. What we believe and who we follow is the foundation of our entire lives, on Earth and after death.
Revelation 7:1 mentions "four angels standing at the four corners of the earth."
"the ends of the earth" appear multiple times in the Bible (e.g., Deuteronomy 13:7)
