The team doesn't move in unison. Modern teams are compressed right? So the only time England are compressed is when they drop deep. What they need to do is compress high too. But I think the manager and maybe even Stones doesn't want to play a high line.
Kane is no captain...England youngsters need a captain to inspire them on the field.

They've changed the rules so that most teams progress to the knockout stages. You can finish third and still progress.

Usually footballers, athletes in general, perform this way when they are getting shown up by the players in the bench in training everyday. Basically they feel like imposters to be the ones in the starting line.
Athletics is one of the disciplines where you can only be at your best by being honest to yourself.
Southgate has to own the team selection and the criticism that goes along with that. Presuming that he is not directing the team to show no desire and effort then that all lies on the players. Southgate needs to make significant changes for the next game and i really hope he is brave enough to do so!

Denmark played quite a bit hard to defend "tikitaka" there, very well done. England unfortunately only pressed with at most one person against it - they would have needed to have at least 3 people to stop the tikitaka but in the fist half, they decided just to get pressed and defend and in the second half there was only one player who tried to snatch the ball from Denmark - which is how everyone lost to Spain in the prime tikitaka period. Lucky England didn't loose, thanks to Denmark not being Spain. Someone would have needed to tell them, get that ball together, since Denmark doesn't play with more players then you on the field. Teamwork, good ideas and being allowed to try them out is what's missing on the field. But in the end, your boys did good enough for now, so apreciate that, too. Just my 2 cents, greetings from Germany.
As is often the case, it's better to have a really good team rather than a group of really good players.
Of course, it's even better to have a really good team made up of really good players. England look like a group of superstars.

You have Mainoo and Palmer on the bench, you put eze and bowen. Why Arnold is starting? and why someone like sterling who was important in past tournament was not chosen. Also the tactics we are using is not good for the starters. Foden is lost and don't have the pace to play counter. Is Jarrad injure, why was he not selected too??? Rashford did not play well this season but i take him any time infront of Eze

Yes, the players are capable when they play in position. You cannot expect to get the best out of Bellingham, Foden & TAA when you play them in unfamiliar positions. Why is Southgate going on about Kalvin Phillips who couldn't even get into the West Ham team. Why didn't Southgate experiment with TAA before the tournament? Southgate is a protected species when it comes to criticism and it has to stop. England knew Southgate plays safe and isn't willing to take risks, he's the ETH of international football where he is about to get sacked but then gets a good result and all is forgotten. 3rd game needs to be about taking risks. Gordon on the left, Kane off, start with Cole Palmer but also someone else upfront to support, move Bellingham into his favored position.
At least do something to get people thinking England could win this, because right now if England were to play better opposition they are going home.

I do agree with you on the 3rd game however. Bench TAA, Kane & Foden and even Bellingham and Declan Rice. ( players who did not impress). Start Cole Palmer at the left, Gordon in at #10, Watkins up front, Mainoo, Wharton and Gallagher in the middle and keep Saka at the right wing. Make a massive statement to the entitled players, take huge risks and see what happens. Bring in Kane, Foden, Rice and Bellingham as subs if necessary. ( keep the back four the same as they did ok)

@@cgo225 Are they that talented..?Bellingham looks seriously overrated...Foden played better yesterday but he does not exactly scare anyone, Saka plays well but can be easily marked, Rice gives the ball away a hell of lot, it was him passing the back to Guhei in a bad position (he had lost the ball prior) that put him in a position to lose the ball to the Danes that almost led to them breaking away for a second, Walker is bullet fast but not alot of end product, John Stones so-so.. Watkins look like he could supply England something

Also their movement off the ball was terrible. The amount of times someone in defence or midfield received the ball and had to pass back, because there was no forward ball on, was crazy. Denmark were comfortably the better side.

I know he's been poor this season, very poor, but GS really should have brought Rashford along, simply for the type of player he is and what he brings on the table. He's too cowardly to do that, though, because it would have meant dropping Foden, replacing Belingham with Foden, or moving Jude into an 8 position and having Foden play as a ten. Ballsy decisions imposible to make by a ballless manager.
I have the impression that coach Southgate may be suffering from depression - which leads to this anxious style of play. I can't explain England's style of play any other way. Great potential talents fizzle out because they follow the manager's instructions, among other things. Garreth steals the joy of football from the players, if only through their positioning on the pitch and the resulting "neutered" movement and running routes... I'm almost shocked because I had so many expectations of ENG (even though I'm a Spain fan)!
These players keep saying "we want Gareth to stay" If that's the case show it !!! Absolute shambles. I'm a Liverpool fan and feel Trent shouldn't be in midfield, but also Trippier shouldn't be on left and Foden on left either. Play Jude in 8 with Rice and Foden in 10 spot. We don't need Rice sitting so deep. Marc G and Stones are playing well together. Play Gomez at LB to give that defensive cover and play Gordon LW. Kane shouldn't be starting as he looks laboured. Start Toney against Slovenia and maybe bring Kane off bench later on

Trent, whether in RB or "quarterback" role, needs runners, either on the wings or through the middle. He had nothing to work with. GS took him off. Fine. Later GS brought on runners in Bowen, Eze and Watkins, and there was no one to consistently find them from distance. Southgate, whom i like as a person, once more is showing his managerial bankruptcy.

Kane needs to stay up front and press, and if he can only do it for 60 minutes then so be it. Bring Olly Watkins on to run in behind + pressing too off the ball. Leading by example to the rest of the team = bloody press.

has nothing to do with it. you can't play grealish AND rashford, and you've got a ready made rashford replacement in gordon. the issue is playing foden on the left instead of as a 10, and trent out of position with no runners outside of saka/walker. our lhs is utterly useless and our midfield can't hold on to the ball
Though Gareth didnt say it, he will rest Kane, Foden and Saka the next match. This is the hard work they've done to achieved it. Only a few good moments are needed to win a match. Look at how Real Madrid beat City and Bayern. To be a champion, you need good defence. The reason Trent started because England need to first score. If England need good defence from the start Callagger will start. Southgate knows the best because England reached WC 2018 semi and Euro 2020 Final. Good mentality, players' fitness and free from injury are needed, not shooting the back of net for free than meet a decent team, everything falls.

It’s a tournament. You don’t need to play great. You just need to do enough to get through to the next round. It’s a competitive league and a long season. Give the boys a break. Jude and Declan as holding players. Foden in front of them and Eze on the right. Just enjoy it as long as you still in it and stop complaining English fans
