    Harri, Dylan is a mercurial genius and his life story could fill several volumes. Even his own autobiography just scratches the surface of his incredible eight decades of mortality. Did you know he proposed to Mavis Staple in 1963? She declined, mostly because Pops Staple didn't approve. Years later, she admitted regretting not accepting, stating: “I often think about what would have happened if I’d married Bobby, though. If we’d had some little plum-crushers, how our lives would be. The kids would be singing now, and Bobby and I would be holding each other up.” Thanks to Brandon and Harri for another Dylan reaction.

    • @ptournas
      @ptournas ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True except for possibly one small detail. In all the interviews I've read with Mavis she said that Dylan went to her father and said "Pops, I'm going to marry your daughter Mavis, and that Pops replied "Well don't tell me, go tell Mavis." She says she turned him down because she didn't want to get married that young.
      I did see her open for Dylan several years ago. It was the tour where Dylan did mostly Frank Sinatra covers and I have to say Mavis definitely stole the show at that one!

    • @John_Chu
      @John_Chu ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ptournas You might be right but it needs to be pointed out that in 1963 Mavis was 23, 2 years older than Dylan. Seems to be a convenient cover story. Race and religion may have been bigger factors than age.

      @@russelleitner4100 I caught one of the shows in New Hampshire. I love Dylan, but it wasn't one of his best shows out of the 7 or 8 times I've seen him. He did almost all Frank Sinatra covers. Mavis stole (and saved) the show!

      Agree. No cover of the song compares to Dylan's original version - not Adele's, not Garth Brooks', etc. It requires the complexity of the emotional content of his voice, as well as the raspiness or ruggedness, to balance the simplicity of the lyrics. Very easy to make the song too sweet, or two one-dimensional-whatever. But Dylan singing it? Time stops every time. So perfect it was released on Time Out of Mind, and I adore that version.

    Bob doesn't write a love song very often, if you think about it. He writes lots of stories about people in love, but not very many "ooh baby, baby" numbers. But when he DOES write a love song... it's like it contains all the other love songs. This is the sum total of all love songs
    "I know you haven't made your mind up yet,
    But I would never do you wrong"
    It's so simple and straight its almost not poetry, but it still gives me goosebumps sometimes, 25 years later, so it must be...

I had at one time in the 70's every single album he ever made. I hung on to most of them, but some "disappeared" with my girlfriend back in those days......I just wrote it off and let her have them. I know she took them because she wanted to remember us together years later. Good on her.

    i saw bob dylan live in portland with Paul Simon in 1999 or 2000. awesome concert. i love (LOVE) when folks realize how many great songs are actually good covers of fantastic poetry that was previously made into good songs by some great musicians.
    when it all lines up, the experience changes a generation (as so many of bob d.'s songs do), but other times, we wait for a cover of that poetry that finds a way to speak to others (sometimes a new generation).
    what a way to live forever. lots of love from here in Oregon, USA

    Thought Time in a Bottle and If [Bread?]. Think I heard Adelle version and line "and everyone's on your case" and I knew immediately an older song. The simple references to develop heavy and complex meanings as human relationships and relations can be simple and complex. Simple words and such subtly and nuance. Is this his best love song, because so damn genuine? You believe it until you ache, the way he seems to ache.

    This song is from Dylan's, "Time Out of Mind", 1997. This has been covered by 450 artists. Voted one of the top 20 songs for the 90's, Dylan emotional read
    and jazz like chord progressions, along with the bass line, make it enjoyable.
    Great reaction Harri. I like Adele's version better. Thanks Harri and Brandon. Great tune. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

    You are a romantic, aren't you? At 3:23 and 4:15, there are two stills of Dylan (on the right) and a guy sitting playing guitar, curly hair (on the left. Is that man Gordon Lightfoot? I believe it is. Wouldn't be surprising. Thanks Harri!

    Best two cover versions in my opinion are from Billy Joel and Ronan Keating. Although Adeles voice in phenomenal!

    Heard Adele joke about the royalties Dylan must have earned from her singing the song and that he should at least buy her a watch
