    Del, You can use any absorbent medium as a filler. Horses for courses. Iron filings added to the mix can give the impression that no filler has been used on metal. Filler sticks best to it's self so stressing the metal before filling; beating, drilling holes etc will give it a mechanical grip on the metal. But, Isopon and others are not as flexible as the metal they are used on, extremes of heat and cold or a good solid whack will make it fall off without a mechanical key. Generally. The deeper the filler the less adhesion and flexibility it has. Also, recycling the dust residue from sanding filler introduces other agents into the filler that maybe undesirable such as the abrasive material from sand paper or concrete dust from the floor, hair, sweat, snot, or even dead skin cells!!!

      Dead skin cells??? Now I know there is a little blood, sweat and tears in my bike now, a real piece of me in the build! Not sure sure about the snot though, as I was wearing a mask lol.... Seriously, thank you for the insight mate, it's always good to learn these things to help get the best results -cheers !

    You can buy "powders" (fillers) including talc from fibreglass suppliers, you have to mix the resin and hardener thoroughly "FIRST" before adding your "fillers" including talc.
    ps "microballoons" from fibreglass suppliers would provide some flexibility and would be a lot less brittle

      I guess I got the procedure wrong, but in the end, I think I'll just buy some more body filler lol !

    from talk powder can make a gap filler , not body filler. "Someone heard that the bell rings but did not know in which church".

  • @onlyme913
    @onlyme913 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about the old filler dust, did that stick to the metal? If not then it’s a problem with the resin it’s self.

    Nice fun video bruv. What a great idea for a group of vids. "Del's myths busted". Let's see some more of them. A great bit of fun for Sunday mornings. Ride safe both of you, the sun is out and there are a lot of people on the road with LEGOLAND drivers license. Take care peeps.

    Resin and Q-Cells is easier to sand, but your right we only ever use it on a plug.
    If its staying in the end product vinylester resin and fumed silica is much better but a bitch to sand after 24hrs.
    I guess if you have time to find any of that stuff you have time to get body filler 😁

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha exactly that buddy, not much point in working too hard at it - the idea is just reaching for something close to hand in an emergency, am sure it's far easier to just use filler !

    Talc is really good for thickening 2 part epoxy.... your problems could be related to additaves in the talc ( perfume) but also because the talc is such a fine powder that it does not bond.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may well be right there buddy... it just came out too brittle foe vehicle use !

    You can use talc plus a couple of other things as a refractory/forge lining..

    @loddude5706 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't listen to him Pen, you don't need filler . . .
    This has got me thinking about all sorts of oddball mediums to mix in - sharp sand for stair treads, sweepings from a hair dressers to reinforce something intricate & strange - or even Presidential . . . Good series Del, looking forward to the discovery of 'Delmacrete'! : ) x

      Here's a good one... iron filings and superglue if you run out of files, or 40 grit sandpaper, or even grinding discs for that matter, the stuff is lethal till it goes rusty lol !

  • @tifrap
    @tifrap 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Next the baking powder and superglue mix or the soap as petrol resistant lube.

    Hi Del. What oil would you suggest for oil change, main.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Presumably by "Main" i assume you mean engine oil, and on what Harley mate?..

    • @jaimielibbi1
      @jaimielibbi1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moonfleet41 yes sorry mate

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, well Harley generally recommends 20W/50 multigrade, again didn't say which model it is, but if you want the best, then Screamin' Eagle Syn3 as sold by your Harley dealer, it exceeds the specification of all of their recommended oils for all applications, inc. transmission and primary, so you can use it in all three holes... hope that helps you, good luck with it mate, Del

    When I used to make model airplanes we used to use Talcum powder and Dope ( dope is used on tissue to shrink it) It made a very good wood filler and very smooth when sanded.

  • @ahshotdown1535
    @ahshotdown1535 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yep that didn't work :) I should have given you a better explanation of how to mix it. Pour the resin out first and then add the talc little by little mixing all the time until you can hold it vertically and it doesn't run. It should NOT look like body filler at all it should still be opaque. Basically use the minimum amount of talc possible in any situation ie more talc for verticals less for horizontals.The less talc you use the finer it will sand and the greater the adhesion.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AHA! I knew it was the skill of the operator at fault...and not the product ! But I was rather shocked how brittle it was, I guess with far less talc and resin, then the plastic =nature of the resin would take over and give the flexibility back... thanks for sharing buddy, really appreciated that, it was great to have some fun with silly things and check out an urban myth... maybe I should research them more as these things usually work if they've managed to circulate to the extent that this trick has !

    • @ahshotdown1535
      @ahshotdown1535 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes a little practice but does give brilliant results, I wouldn't use it on the fighter tail far too much mixing involved but for tank dents and the like theres nothing better.

  • @tomm7963
    @tomm7963 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I served as an apprentice many years ago we used to mix .... water, a grainy substance called sugar a whiteish liquid called milk and sometimes a small bag containing something called tea ??? That’s a old wives tale that’s still popular now I believe it always made grumpy mechanics smile so I’m thinking some concoctions do really work!!! Lol Great video !! Have a great day!!

    Classic quote from Minder. Arnie: "I worked late, and I ran out of filler, and I gave you a bell and you said use a couple of handfuls of mud..." Arthur; "I was speaking metaphorically..." Theoretically, almost anything can be used as a filler. It's whether it stays put and flexes. I knew a guy who bodged a filler job on a car door. Lovely paint job, slammed the door closed and it all fell out...

      Hi Del & P, myth busted!
      As far as using it where vibration would be present,
      I have use portage oats mixed with filer to make good a small section of wall that had that nobbly wallpaper though!
      Blended in nicely,
      Most things will act as a binding agent, but thanks to you folks will have a think about suitability for purpose before repairing a tank ding with horse hair mixed in the filer!
      Good video
      Kind regards Warren
