    If you attempt this don't forget one critical part he glossed over. Didn't catch where he did the PVA top coat so it will cure non tacky. Just caught the mention that he washed it off. If you skip the PVA or wax additive, the results will not be good.

      @@infinite540 I don't actually cook it. I don't have a chemical reactor. But I could if I did. I buy neutral gel coat and pigments. I can match anything. I know "anything" is a bold claim but I haven't missed it yet. But you can also. It's all made by another human.

    This is a very late observation to this wonderful video. To avoid clumps of silica in your resin Strain the dry silica before mixing it into the resin. Force it through a strainer with a table spoon

      I mean if your making it to try it, just look up pva and follow the instructions. But like I say in the video just buy it if you need a lot of it; more than a few ounces.

  • @makingcookingfixing

    That is VERY cool! You always hear about this mystic product 'gel coat', never truly paid attention what it is, but maybe the name gives it away, that it is 'gellin' and polyester is also 'gellin' One thought that I had was, why is that color of gelcoat right out of the can that greenish-blue color, is that a colorant they put in so you can't color it properly (but you did), I was thinking with that greenish-blue color and your red tint that maybe it would've turned black LOL. So just wondering why gelcoat out of the tin isn't clear, if that is colored on purpose. If you would put white tint, can it actually become white? Cheers for the experiment!

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  ปีที่แล้ว

      The bluish color isn’t gelcoat. It’s polyester resin. And yes if you add white it will be white. You can buy clear gelcoat. You can buy gelcoat in any color. Again the bluish liquid you saw wasn’t gelcoat it was polyester resin.

    • @makingcookingfixing
      @makingcookingfixing ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HoldFastMarine yes sorry, I meant the blue-ish colour polyester resin. So you basically DID IT! You kinda unraveled that mystique! Now after mixing it, in the beginning you said you read to put about a teaspoon of the silica, but you added more later, what would you say you ended up doing in percentage and what about the colour, I would imagine you don’t need a lot of pigment? Is that measurable ?

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I added more later. And the pigment is measurable. As well as the silica. I hope you understand that for me youtube is a business and I can’t give everything away for free as much as I’d like to. The total formula so you can either scale the mixture up or down is on my Patreon.

    • @HoldFastMarine

    Big Fan! In a nutshell, I have a fiberglass canoe, light blue color. Unsure what the surface is, gel, paint?? Can I apply (olive drab) gel coat directly to the surface. It sanded with 1000 grit…but to the touch it feels too smooth to allow adhesion. Should I get it rough er? I am cleaning it off with acetone.
    Will it be a mistake to simply roll it on and get it as smooth as I can….with a canoe, can I live with not sanding.

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh rah homie. 1k grit isn’t remotely close. You want to sand with a minimum 100 grit. Most likely your canoe is paint. Most canoes are made with epoxy resin. My idea for you is to sand with 180 grit and rattle can that old canoe. Use an epoxy paint and make sure you prime it first.

      @@HoldFastMarine You are gonna laugh at this question: raddle can- You mean spray can spray it? I can’t find Epoxy in a spray can. I am clear on the other ways you demonstrated how to apply. I’ll prob just get the sprayer like you used and apply it that way. Epoxy, with color would be very convenient in a spray can. Thanksss👍 (O by the way, I did the Marine marathon in DC 3 times after I was 50 - dumb Marine😂🤣😃)

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup. It doesn’t need to be epoxy paint. Enamel will work just as good for a canoe. Polyurethane is the best choice. But you can buy 2 part polyurethane paint on Amazon. Eastwood also makes a topcoat in a can. There’s lots of options out there. Including epoxy spray paint! Just takes some looking on the internet.
