The Microsoft employee store ones would most likely just be marked like that so employees couldn't buy a bunch with their discount and then resell for a profit. Hence the employee number on them so it's traceable.
The Pokemon distribution cartridges are super cool because not only do you get to preserve the actual events to give out willy nilly, some even have things that never got officially distributed, like an early version of the 2011 Celebi in the cartridge for the shiny Legendary Beast trio. It can even be used for the same extra content (a time travel fight with Giovanni in HGSS and a hidden Zorua when transferred to Black and White)
Yes that's the one I have! I managed to get it from ebay a few years ago for like 25 bucks, and now it's shot up in price so glad I got it back then lol
You can easily emulate those carts to still do all the events with a flash cart.

I love the longer episodes, but man, I really missed these shorter ones. They have such a distinct feel and tend to be the some of the funniest stuff on the channel imo (which this one also delivers on)

There are *some* (not many) Not For Resale full cartridges that have extra cut content.
Those ones have game preservation purposes, but the majority now are just considered "gold disc" versions; the first off the shipping line.
That is the cool thing about physical media we will never get again because of how prevalent digital content is now, a lot of stuff will be lost forever in 20 or so years

@@HUYI1 On the other hand, digital media is great because even if exactly one copy of something was produced, if the owner uploads it, we can all have it.
Minor correction on the Microsoft Store items - they can be purchased by non-employees.
In fact, as employees we get 15 passes per year to grant to friends and family. This enables those people to go in person to the store in building 92 and purchase any thing that they want at the same cost an employer pay or they can purchase any software through our internal online store.
The only shortcomings of this is that only employees have access to cheaper hardware such as the consoles and controllers, which we can buy for about $100 less than it would go for retail

I think it'd be neat to see a return to the "Cancelled Games" topic, or maybe prototypes, or even repro carts. With what's available before and since that video, I feel there could be enough material for a follow-up or maybe even more; Of what Scott didn't cover/say much about, on terms of just the stuff people can play, there's (to name a few) Dinosaur Planet, Pokémon Picross on GBC, Puggsy on SNES, South Park GBC (Scott briefly mentioned this game but didn't say/show anything about its gameplay), Segapede, Lunar Chase (the localization of X), the WCES build of Star Fox 2 that Scott used footage of, Scooby-Doo: Night of 100 Frights on PS1, Socks the Cat Rocks the Hill, Dino Hockey, Gex Jr., Spider-Man 4, Battlebots, and Carnivalé (both the GBC and N64 games). Of course there's still some that haven't surfaced in a playable form as of, such as Twelve Tales: Conker 64, and Kirby's Adventure GCN, so I feel there's some room to dabble more on these titles.

As a vinyl record collector, I can't begin to tell you how many 7" singles I've seen and bought with the "promotional copy, not for sale" text on the label. Those things really made me ponder the journeys they all took from promo to record store shelf.
I saw them more on 78s than anything.

Same, I have poor cousins so I’d give them my GameCube or PS2 stuff thinking they’d get needed entertainment and it would stay in the family.
Plot twist, they’d immediately sell it to GameStop for pennies and buy drugs.
Now I can’t afford to rebuy what I used to own and my cousins are still without games. At least now I’ve learned that certain gifts shouldn’t be wasted on ungrateful people.

3:05 THIS defined my early teens perfectly! I'd go shopping on Saturday with my mom and grandma. While they did their thing, I did my thing - playing these things in Electronics! Is it just me, or did it seem somehow that the demos in these kiosks looked and performed SO much better than the actual retail release?
2:08 The reason why those are labeled like that is because the games are sold to employees at a deeply discounted price and they don't want the employees trying to "return" them or otherwise re-sell them at full price. Which, if you were paying people decently, then you wouldn't have to worry about that kind of side hustle but here we are. Those employee numbers are on there so they know who to fire.

When I worked at Kmart I disassembled our GBA kiosk and it had a not for resale Metroid Fusion cartridge. Since the whole thing was going in the trash compactor anyway, I shucked the cartridge. Was a good game.

5:31 the Jet Force Gemini demo cart is a good novelty, but it made finding a working ROM dump a pain in the ass, because the demo was programmed to not let you complete the second stage, and most of the ROM dumps I ever saw of the game were the demo version.
There's something magical about seeing or hearing about a "Not for Re-sale" game being a once forgotten kiosk demo or a specially made version of the game meant for events and not one of the numerous pack-in titles you'd find for your new console.
Just knowing that a piece of gaming history has been obtained and preserved makes me happy because we get to see what was planned before getting completely scrapped for the final release or knowing that if possible at some point, you can re-obtain that one specific item you thought was lost forever without the need of cheats.
I think the reason for the sticker with the Microsoft company store is that they sell those games at a SUPER high discount. People could purchase them in there and resell (if they didn't have the sticker) for a decent profit. I think its also very possible that some of these games were put on shelves at the Microsoft Company Store a bit before final release dates.
Pretty much. Profiting off company store purchases will get you in hot water real quick, potentially fired or worse. Though they’re not likely to come after you for unloading your copy of Azurik for $0.25 at GameStop.

Most of these mean the retailer, who got it from the manufacturer, can't split the product up and sell them separately, since it's supposed to be part of a bundle. Once a customer gets it, then they can do what they want. The "do not remove" tags on clothing is the same thing, it only applies to the retailer. It's actually for customer protection, to keep people from being ripped off by retailers.
We NEED more Cheep or Steep, it's by FAR the best gameshow ever.
When I was a kid growing up my copy of Sonic the hedgehog simply said not for resale, and I was absolutely convinced that was the title of the game, after a few years I was confused why everybody was calling the game by the wrong name

I have a NFR cartridge of Super smash bros. 3DS that I swiped from a Best Buy during the preview event they had before the game released. They just had a display setup for playing the demo and the Nintendo reps were busy handling something else. I went to the home menu on the 3DS and noticed they had the digital version of the demo downloaded on the system AND a cartridge, so I launched the digital version of the game and sneakily slipped the cart out and up into my long sleeve. I then booked it out of there as if I had just committed grand larceny lmao.
I notified the police and they said they are on their way to you now.

I have a complete collection of Not for Resale Pokemon Distribution cartridges for Gen 4 and 5. Absolutely cherish them. Great to see you do a video on this topic, it's so interesting. I have a copy of Pokemon Emerald NFR but it's literally the full game. Usually a demo for stores and they didn't bother making a custom rom. Great video man.

My uncle has worked for Microsoft since the 90s and all my original Xbox games had that not for sale sticker. From what I remember, for a while you could buy the games at the cost to produce them as an employee.. and employees would try and resell them. prompting the creation of the strongest glue backed piece of paper.

This reminded me of a little gem that my brother and I had when I was a kid.
Our dad worked at a certain retail store when it closed down, so he ended up getting a few things there as it went down that otherwise wouldn't end up used. The most interesting was a Nintendo DS game cart for a download station. If you insert it into one DS, you could connect another to it wirelessly to get a number of temporary demos, or even what was essentially DLC in a few games.
Mainly what we used it for was special, exclusive BrotherBands in Megaman Starforce 2. In the game, you could form BrotherBands with NPCs and other players in person, but this game cart let you unlock powerful BrotherBands with characters you can't in the game itself, like the original Mega Man, in 8-bit form.
That game cart very well may be a largely unowned, unique collectible.
Such good videos from Scott and Co. Never dissapoints.

Strange. I don't think I ever owned a "not for resale" games. Was this only in the US? Most toy stores in my country didn't have demo kiosks. Maybe they are more rare here.
They're only in the public because of people who worked in the stores seeling them online these days or giving copies to family members over time I would have to assume. The general public at the time of all these games launching never had their hands on these.
Console bundles have these _sometimes_.
