Assault Horizon was actually the first Ace Combat I played. As a flight combat game, it was alright. I was a teenager when it came out so admittedly I loved that cinematic dogfight mode more than I should have. As an Ace Combat game though, I can see why you all hate it.
let's be honest, it's a Michael Bay AC game. It's not hard to like if all you want is 'splosions and aircraft. Also, yes. The graphics and QTEs are the most 2011 thing I've seen in a long time.
I think a major reason the Ace fandom hated AH was because at the time they thought it was Ace Combat 7. We were all scared that DFM was gonna stay in the series forever, but thankfully it didn't and now AH is just a unique little spin-off.
if only there is no DFM, Helicopter, and Gunship things. With that graphic, even though it takes in real world, as long as they keep the gameplay same as other AC, it think AC AH will not that bad
@@adlibbed2138 project wingman, aside from being a jet game, has absolutely nothing to do with AH. It was made by fans of the mainline games, and it plays like a normal ace combat game. And it’s so much better than AH lol it’s an insult to compare them
Ace Combat assault Horizon truly scared me because I thought the franchise was dead and thank God ace combat 7 came along and brought light back into my life
What I really liked about AH, was the destruction of the planes, how they literally lose parts when you take them down, the soundtrack, and the ability to customise the paint job of the planes, I wish we had at least the last one in AC7 (not the soundtrack, the soundtrack I'm AC7 is fucking majestic)
Okay, but can we talk about my BIGGEST problem with Assault Horizon? It's the view. The camera is way too close to the aircraft and shaking constantly. This game gave me motion sickness the first time i played it, the only game ever to do so. Not to mention that like half, likely more, of the game is literally the same mission. The "intercept the waves of bombers" missions are boring and get old real fast. The only interesting missions are the airfield defence one and the one where you dogfight in a hurricane.
That may be the biggest factor as to why I can't get past the prologue for the game. I've tried the Xbox 360 demo numerous times and never went beyond it, but when I got the PC copy, I was having complete trouble with just how much plane was being thrust into the camera (It was like trying to play Call of Duty at default FOV with Destiny/Battleborn/Far Cry 5 viewmodels). It made the Focus-On-Target almost completely useless at times due to the fact my plane could be covering the entire screen.
And then in cockpit view the FOV just feels too narrow and your head doesn't turn more than 90 degrees in any direction, so you can't look behind you _at all_ in cockpit.
I accepted this game as it’s own thing and like it for that. Thank for not taking a big dump on it for likes, and giving it another run through for a modern review.
I remember being a teenager and wanting this game sooo bad. It wasn't my first Ace Combat, that would be Ace Combat Assault Horizon legacy for the 3DS which wasn't the same as the console version - it was actually a really good remake of Ace Combat 2 and worked amazing with the 3DS' features even having a + edition released a few years later that let you use Amiibos to unlock special aircraft, unlock special aircraft through ? blocks and other minor additions that I enjoyed. It's actually because of that game I fell in love with Strangereal and my favorite protagonist will always be Phoenix, the leader of 37th Air Force 18th Tactical Fighter Squadron "Scarface". My near obsession of the game and love for Phoenix even earned me that nickname in high school and my best friend has my old hoodie the school gave me with my nickname on the back. As for AH itself, it was my second ever Ace Combat (7 and, through preorder, 5 being third and fourth respectively) and first to be played on console and I have to say I rather enjoyed it despite a lot of my more hardcore Ace Combat fan friends shitting on it. I hated the chopper gunner and AC130 parts but I enjoyed the helicopter portions and hope we get more of that in the future, I wouldn't mind a Co Op mode in 8 where we get to fly Longbows or other helicopters to provide CAS as well as pilot bombers in another mission with other players in fighters escorting before bombing designated targets. This may be a spin off that very few liked, but I see some things that could in all honesty work with future installments of the Strangereal games, primarily for Multiplayer. I think instead of the FFA and TDM that 7 has now they could take from AH and I heard that Infinity (which I actually played in the last day not knowing it was about to shut down...) also had amazing multiplayer that 7 players wish we had.
I played the first one quite an amount. I somewhat liked it (Especially since it had Co-op), but keep in mind I had only played Airforce Delta II (Deadly Skies in my region, Airforce Delta Storm in North America, because Konami really had a lot of issues putting a name to their Ace Combat envy) for the Xbox at the time. I played the second one's demo which came out barely after the game was announced, and it was dreary! The frame-rate dropped from 60fps to 30fps, a lot of "Wait until the action happens", then they thought "Imagine Ace Combat refueling, but unskippable, longer & probably actually annoying!?". I'd probably actually recommend Ace Combat: Assault Horizon over at least H.A.W.X 2. The first one got some good mileage out of Assistance Off, ran at 60fps on consoles & largely kept gameplay-bullshit to a minimum (They even got Steve Blum back to voice Scott Mitchell from the featured Ghost Recon cast for that sweet AC5: TUW nostalgia bonus point), but I could definitely tell it was largely "Ace Combat, but with Tom Clancy & no Strangereal charms nor High-G Turns (I think)". Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is a game I can't bring myself to play. Tried the Xbox 360 demo a fair few times, and never went beyond. Got the PC version, and still haven't gotten past the prologue (The plane's proximity & presence of the camera is a very big reason). But while the music may not be a favourite for series fans, it remains a huge highlight for the game! ('Dogfight', 'Paint', 'Naval Warfare' & 'Shall Defend' are easily recommendable favourites of mine). In contrast, playing Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation only a couple of years back was like playing the combat flight game I had been missing all this time and half the scripted thrills of Assault Horizon were being had in real-time in the huge dogfights of that game (Still trying to get the ideal means to play the Holy Trinity after adoring Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War's tale & legendary soundtrack, and wanting me a piece of Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies & Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War's action).
The ending of the game made me laugh my ass off, the fist pump in almost silence. It’s even better if you don’t hit the button because then he just stands there
If they take something from this game, I hope they take idea of using bombers and flesh that out more in the next game so we have more missions and can actually buy and customize different bombers and different ammunitions the same as the fighters. I enjoyed carpet-bombing the ever-living shit out of targets.
Infinity brought back bombers, but I never had a PS3 so I can't say if they were implemented all that well or not. From what I could see they both had buffed UGBs (4 shots between reloads instead of 2), and the secondary weapons were guided bombs.
@@northropi2027 Bombers could be selected for most missions and were very effective you can see TH-cam videos of B-2 doom squads annihilating ground missions. Frankly, Infinity's game modes and variety were insane and worth a full price game.
I think a smaller bomber, built for speed, could work in Strangereal-set games. Something like the Lancer or many of the Russian medium-sized jet bombers. B-2s would be possible, but size-wise a bit of an overkill for what's a fighterplane game series.
I hated the fact that they used the franchise name to make the ‘CoD but planes’ game, I waited SOOOO long after playing AC5 (because I never had an Xbox) to play this game and even then I knew it lost the magic. some thing that makes ACAH good is dynamic camera when shooting missiles, changing view animation, customizable paint job (eat that AC7), im@s skin, and big bomber mission
And the soundtrack on the final boss battle is somehow matches nicely, better than AC6 on its superweapon final battle. Well, at least without "bishop" and "markov" all over the place.
Don't forget that assault horizon had one of the largest selections of skins, with basically all of the paint jobs from previous titles. It also had custom colored skins too, and I don't understand why that wasn't included in AC7
I just started playing this series a few months ago and.....I really like this game. It's far more arcady then the other games in the series. The graphics are pretty damn good too. The dog fighting moments get annoying but they're optional. It's just easier to take out planes using it. I really like the bomber mission as well.
Assault Horizon was my first introduction to the Ace Combat series itself. Does it have many issues? Yes. Is it completely incompatible with the mainline AC universe? Yes. Can it still be an enjoyable game with a few merits that deserve to be praised? Yes (this includes the graphics, the flying when it doesn't put you on rails, the stealth bomber mission, and the soundtrack). But is there also a lot that deserves to be scathed? Also yes. While this game is definitely the redheaded stepchild or black sheep of the AC family, you can definitely say that the commercial success of Assault Horizon paved the way for AC7's development and release. Not only that, but someone like me who had no interest in the AC franchise previously was introduced to the series because of this game and proceeded to go to the mainline games after.
One good thing you have to give the game credit for: the music was awesome. Also, while I mostly agree with what is said in the video, I did not find the helicopter parts that bad (the ones where you pilot the helicopter, not the turret).
Ah you forgot to mention that the Helicopter scenes had this feature where you could constantly do a barrel roll and doge RPG's. It get's so comedic how much they do it
I was talking to a few people in a chat room once about AC7. I said it was really good and absolutely worth trying. Then one guy said that AH was the best game in the series and refused to play any AC game that didn't have DFM in it because "It fixed all the issues Flight Sims have". No, we did not get along after that.
2:57 And after the DFM sessions, which saw the player getting railroaded into letting the enemy strafe and crash into the oil facilities, I was left dumbfounded. Really, game? Didn't we just fail the mission, HARD?
Holy shit dude you videos are pretty great and I don't even care about Ace Combat, and honestly watching these don't make me, but funny man make funny haha jokes so fuck me subbed.
I remember playing this during a free weekend. Slapped some moe artwork on the jet and got into the first forced dogfight segment. That was about enough for me, and AC as a whole had to tempt me with Metal Gear but with jets-tier trailers to drag me back in.
I’m so glad I saw this game got it on my wish list to buy later and forgot about it. I only remembered it because after getting Acr Combat 7 I looked to see if 4,5 or zero were on steam and saw this. I fear if I had gotten this game I would have forgone all other Ace Combat games, so long story short bullet dodged
This game is part of the Dark Age of Japanese HD games. So many Japanese devs sort of lost their mojo and started to copy bland american shooters like COD or Gears. We had stuff like AC Assault Horizon, Quantum Theory, Mindjack, Catacombs(cancelled) or even worse farming their IPs to western devs. Capcom was famous for doing this and all the games that came out sucked. Konami did this as well
Actually a really helpful video, because I'm sitting here trying so hard to get through Assault Horizon, thinking "I don't know if I should buy Ace Combat 7 if it's anything like this". So, I'm glad to hear that it's not :)
The sounds, graphics, music, realistic stages, and attention to the smallest details, such as the sound of the Russian machine gun differing from the American one, and the sound of the A10 being completely different from everyone else, as in reality, were amazing and I really love it. It is really the most beautiful part of the series, and in my opinion, it is the best part.
I’m going to be real, I played the canyon battle where you fight the aces in ace combat 5 and was disappointed, the enemy aces just follow a set pattern and you just wait until they stay straight enough to blast away.
If we're talking about things in AH that didn't suck, I'd like to bring up intercepting bombers. You really had 3 options, stay out of DFM and spam missiles at them, use DFM and k e e p e m i n t h e r e d c i r c l e , or use DFM and machine gun all of the engines for a faster kill. That was the best, actually probably the only good thing DFM changed for the better.
The only reason that Markov nuked Russia was that he was in geography class when the Soviet Union fell and the lesson on where the Americans capitol is was cut short
I have weird feelings about this game. My first AC game was 4, played it a bit at my grandma's house. Then comes AH at a point in my life where I wanted a plane game but had no consoles or anything, so I took its PC version up for a bit and even ended up making my first Steam review a shaky recommend for it. I've since completed 4, 5, and 7 and I still don't think it's terrible. Protip: if you go DFM, the enemy briefly stops maneuvering for the animation that plays, so shoot two missiles as you enter DFM to win. It kind of occurs to me now on top of everything how a lot of the new stuff is wasted potential. Helicopters, for instance. They have these dumb translational controls that are basically Minecraft creative mode with autoaim. But if you gave them normal plane controls, but with the gun pointing at your locked target and thrust being changed to collective, it would've been fun. Same for bombers- they looked fun in Infinity, where they were treated like normal planes but big and bombs-only, but here they're *completely* unable to fire except in their bombing run mode. It seems like they're adamant on not coming back to even bombers though, as if the problem was their inclusion rather than their implementation. Sure, maybe they don't fit, but they could've been fun. Maybe one of the DLCs they're gonna do for seven will do them justice.
Several years later, my thought about AH is this: it's fun for an occasional replay, it has awesome action and visuals and in general it definitely is a pretty good arcade flight game, unless you remember it's supposed to be an Ace Combat... Seriously, if they had just called it Assault Horizon, without branding it as an Ace Combat, i'm sure people would remember it as an interesting experiment by Project Aces and not as the black sheep of the series
Agreed. Maybe wouldnt become that especial as other games but it would at least be less trash talked by the fans as it would draw a line that alienates it from the ace combat franchise. I think they just wanted to use the ace combat name to for marketing and bigger sales.
Yeah, Assault Horizon is an insult to players who like to actually engage in a dogfight instead of having this "dogfight" mode hold your hand as if dogfighting in a flight simulator is so hard! Get some distance, keep your surroundings of any opponent you encounter and strategize your controls. It's not that hard!
I recently got on an itch for more of the Ace Combat series. I already had Ace Combat 5 way back in the 2000s, played Ace Combat 6, and got Ace Combat 4 near Christmas time last year. Those games are similar but you can feel the similarities and differences between Ace Combat 4-5-6. Ace Combat Assault Horizon doesnt feel like those. Before getting Ace Combat Assault Horizon I watched AngryJoe's review and he praise it as an awesome game. I purchased it and wow I was disappointed. I wish I had seen this first. The game looks great, but plays terrible. Its not bugged, its just bad. Combat is all about racing to enter the quick time events for Dogfights, Air Strikes, and scenes that you have to push buttons to continue. Want to know how bad it is? The game autosaves after completing mission objectives and youll need it often because you can only take a little damage before getting a mission over. If youre not in a Dogfight with someone then 5+ enemies will be shooting you, and in a Dogfight they backoff slightly. Where are the features from previous games? You cannot land on a runway, carrier, or starting zone to repair, reload, and change weapons. You cannot command your wingman or anyone else to help you.
Assault Horizon was actually the first Ace Combat I played. As a flight combat game, it was alright. I was a teenager when it came out so admittedly I loved that cinematic dogfight mode more than I should have. As an Ace Combat game though, I can see why you all hate it.

IT HAS ARRIVED.
Even the worst Ace Combat is a good game.

I think AceCombatFan made a video on that a while back.
@@Dexter037S4 There are others in the series, such as some motor mouth.
don't you see dem waifus on his fighters 🤣🤣🤣🤣🙃🙃🙃🙃
Ah you forgot to mention that the Helicopter scenes had this feature where you could constantly do a barrel roll and doge RPG's. It get's so comedic how much they do it
I was talking to a few people in a chat room once about AC7. I said it was really good and absolutely worth trying. Then one guy said that AH was the best game in the series and refused to play any AC game that didn't have DFM in it because "It fixed all the issues Flight Sims have".
No, we did not get along after that.
Your dry humour keeps me coming back. Best line of the whole review: "Assault horizon is not a bad game. That being said, I hate it".
Beautiful.

Really, game? Didn't we just fail the mission, HARD?

I realized that when you were talking about Markov and the Shark, Baby Shark was playing in the background.
we loved over the shoulder shooting so much we have over the shoulder dog fighting
Holy shit dude you videos are pretty great and I don't even care about Ace Combat, and honestly watching these don't make me, but funny man make funny haha jokes so fuck me subbed.
Next up. Battlefield. _Just the plane missions_
Barely any to be real
Cool vid
I remember playing this during a free weekend. Slapped some moe artwork on the jet and got into the first forced dogfight segment.
That was about enough for me, and AC as a whole had to tempt me with Metal Gear but with jets-tier trailers to drag me back in.
Ace Combat: learning the importance of giving the players control the hard way 10 years before everyone else.
Channeling your inner Plinkett for some of this review.

"A complete revitalization of the series" - Destructoid
God I hope whoever thought that was fired.
I'd like to think that they were sentenced to go dance with the angels, before being properly educated on what V2 is for.
Ac7 is a million times better
@@oboeshoesgames And Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies is a million times better than all of them
The sounds, graphics, music, realistic stages, and attention to the smallest details, such as the sound of the Russian machine gun differing from the American one, and the sound of the A10 being completely different from everyone else, as in reality, were amazing and I really love it. It is really the most beautiful part of the series, and in my opinion, it is the best part.
I did like the soundtrack of the game tbh.
Jayce Valkarian yeah at least every ace combat game has that
Yeah the soundtrack is kinda legit
Jokes on the ace combat veterans, this game made me get interested in the ace combat franchise
That's one of the good things about AH. It makes Nuggets aware of better Ace Combats even in older titles
When he said "there's not enough vodka", I felt that
You forgot to mention how vodka guy who betrays you prior to the Miami mission is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal (aka Pixy's VA).
I’m going to be real, I played the canyon battle where you fight the aces in ace combat 5 and was disappointed, the enemy aces just follow a set pattern and you just wait until they stay straight enough to blast away.
there is not enough vodka
If we're talking about things in AH that didn't suck, I'd like to bring up intercepting bombers. You really had 3 options, stay out of DFM and spam missiles at them, use DFM and k e e p e m i n t h e r e d c i r c l e
, or use DFM and machine gun all of the engines for a faster kill. That was the best, actually probably the only good thing DFM changed for the better.
I can't stop watching this masterpiece
Maybe one of the DLCs they're gonna do for seven will do them justice.
if you want to hear *keep em in the red circle* is in 2:02 your welcome

Assault Horizion After Seeing This: 'Plays How Bad I Can Be But Im Screaming The Lyrics By HunterS1K'
Haha that ending with the fist bump in the air Got me dead
Go Dance With The Angels!
Bright side is we got the best soundtrack of anything ever out of it.
3:22 Did... did you just put Baby Shark in there?
Yeah, Assault Horizon is an insult to players who like to actually engage in a dogfight instead of having this "dogfight" mode hold your hand as if dogfighting in a flight simulator is so hard! Get some distance, keep your surroundings of any opponent you encounter and strategize your controls. It's not that hard!
Man HOW do you only have 7k subs

“There is not enough vodka” got me everytime!!!
I absolutely loved assault horizon. I grew up on it and it’s what got me into ace combat
You cannot command your wingman or anyone else to help you.
i have about 120 hour in this game and marko boss theme istll give me chills till this day
