My wife and I do audiobooks for a living, and have to say that this is absolute fantastic. I love the music and all the sound effects. They add such an awesome and fitting amount of ambiance.
Attack of the Mutant is my favourite Goosebumps story. I found it in perfect condition at a second hand shop the other day and bought it. I thought Attack of the Mutant was a good story with a interesting premise. I own book which is very similar to Attack of the Mutant which is called StarTroopers: The Final Episode by Ged Maybury which was about a boy whom discovers that his favourite science fiction franchise about heroic intergalactic warriors battling evil aliens are not fictional and are real and joins the heroes of his favourite franchise as they set out to save Earth.
I haven't heard this in more than 20 years. I had this one on tape, along with Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes. I really wanted to collect all of the ones that were done this way, but by the time I learned about them, they were getting really hard to find.
I like how this story pokes fun at the idea of keeping a first issue mint, which was a big thing in the 90s, when people thought EVERY first issue or "zeroeth" issue would be worth THOUSANDS each in just a couple decades. The industry tried to work with the big spectator boom by coming out with frequent "first issues", some having holographic covers or trading cards inside to increase the value. Comics were selling BIG, the biggest sales of any decade, but the WRITING was at its lowest. Comics were being made to be collectors items rather than books to be OPENED and READ. And that's why comic fans consider the 90s as "The Dark Age of Comics".
Every road trip my dad and I would take we'd listen to this, a night in terror tower, and all the rest of the ones that we had. This one is my #1 favorite even today, nothing like listening to Invader Zim talk to Bart Simpson 😆 🤣 😂 😆🤣😂
Is Mitzy.....Coco Bandicoot?!? And Skipper sounds like Billy West.... Edit: Wait....that's Zim's evil laugh....holy fuck. That's, that's..... It can't be! But it is!!! Richard Horvitz!!!!
If they make a 3rd *Goosebumps* movie, I want the Masked Mutant to be the main villain, except we find out near the end of the movie, he's actually working for Slappy as his lieutenant and field leader. But I don't want the Masked Mutant's costume to look like from the TV series, because it looks like a cheesy ripoff from a 1960s superhero show, like the Adam West *Batman* show.
At 35:21, “The next drawing showed the building at street level. In the deep shadows, someone was sneaking into the headquarters building. I turned the page… (Brief pause, then…) …I DON’T BELIEVE IT!!!!!” (SCARY MUSIC BUILDS AND SUSTAINS) “TURN THE TAPE OVER, UNLESS… YOU’VE GOT… …GOOSEBUMPS.” (EVIL LAUGH)
this is way better than the tv show version. you know what they often say, the book was better than the show or movie. I actually kinda would have liked to see skipper's little sister. also libby wasn't much of a red-head and I'm disappointed she didn't get a bigger part like she did in the book
I agree. The TV show version of the Masked Mutant was too much of a pantomime villain with cartoonish vibes of a Disney villain. And don't even get me started on how HORRIBLY cheesy his costume was.
If there was a paragraph written where Skipper says "Sheesh" towards his father in regards to comics and homework, I bet his father would be SO angry with Skipper, he'd explode and say "DON'T YOU 'SHEESH' ME, YOUNG MAN!!" and his face would be as purple as a radish from being so angry.
I remember very clearly, when I was seven years old, I had this tape, and it was my favorite! Absolutely loved it! Well, I put it in my dad‘s old tape deck to listen to it at night one night because I was asleep in his room while he was at work. It ate my tape. I was very upset! Very upset!
This audiobook was good, but the Deep Trouble audiobook was good too, and it had great voiceover by the late Adam Rich as Billy Deep. It’s also the only adaptation there is of the book since the Goosebumps episode actually adapts the second book.
Skipper is Raz from Psychonauts and Zim from Invader Zim. Libby is Chuckie from Rugrats and Bart from the Simpsons. Wilson is Rock Lee from Naruto. I just went down the same IMDB rabbit hole. Lol

I want to know how to get a hold of the music used in this. I know it sounds weird, but I love that basement music. The baseline. So ominous and bad ass.
There’s something oddly horrifying about that ending stinger. Kid just wanted to save his favorite hero and ended up being forced to live the life of one in the process.
@@tmntfangirl4700 and while it has been pointed out, you also have Skip being played by Rich Horvitz who has done tons of characters like Zim. What a strangely star studded VA cast lol Goosebumps was unstoppable in the 90s
Now I saw why R.L Stine made Attack of the Mutant more kid friendly and not scary as an episode. The original book was more darker. Well shit, that explains a lot. Lots of people think the tv episode is one of the worst. They don't literally know or read the actual story/book. The voice of the girl is irritating in my opinion though.
