When I taught, students asking if they need to learn all the notes on the fretboard was a frequent question. I would give tips, tell them to put forth a little effort at it and most importantly keep playing a lot and like you said our brains are wired a certain way, it will organize it, and you will eventually know all the notes naturally. It may take a while, but it will come. I can't even pinpoint when that happened for me, but it did, you just keep playing everyday

Think about what? None of them or their bands did anything special for music in general. And when it comes to technique and skills it really means nothing. Bands like King Crimson, Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath presented something new in music, GN'R or Angra didn't. And those bands didn't need flashy guitarists to achieve their goals. Most rock and metal bands just repeat the same shit for decades, they just copy older stuff.

They started at the period of time when this kind of music and attitude was on the back heel, and without MTV they would be average-popular band. They were popular and had catchy pop rock charts songs, but musicially it was nothing new, creative or ambitious. Maybe if you woke up in 1987 and never heard music from last 20 years, it was something new and good. Being looked up means that you are popular, doesn't mean that you are good musician. King Crimson made for music much more than GN'R and they are less known, so doesn't mean anything, Robert Fripp is 100 times better musician and guitarist than Slash.

When capturing ideas on the phone, do you use a mobile DAW like Garageband and then import to your computer? Or are you just using a generic sound recorder? Being on the road touring, I would think that having a mobile DAW would help you elaborate some ideas a bit more before being able to go back home

So when somebody asks you what is your favorite guitar player or who is your favorite guitar player and why well you can give them a short answer and say because I love them or you can give them a long dissertation of why you like them.
