    I also had a similar experience with Bradbury. Did not like Fahrenheit 451, but he has become one of my favorite short story writers.

    Nice video! I've read most of the books in the top 50 here, it's always fun to see where people's tastes agree and diverge (for example Rendezvous with Rama I wish I liked more than I do)
    On the list I think my favorites are Hyperion and Ubik. I kinda wish these goodreads lists had a limit of 1 author per top spot so we could get more great authors like George Alec Effinger or James Blish inna top 50

    • @JosephReadsBooks
      @JosephReadsBooks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks!
      James Blish is on my short list of writers from that era that I need to read.
      I will keep an eye out for a copy of Ubik.

    Excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I'd move The Dispossessed up two tiers and Starship Troopers down two tiers. I also think The Handmaid's tale deserves a little more love, even if she doesn't think it's sci-fi. The Left Hand of Darkness, A Canticle for Leibowitz, and Ender's Game are all in my S tier. I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion of The Road and Flowers for Algernon, but for some reason I've had a hard tie finishing Neuromancer. Don't ask me why. And you're right about The Lathe of Heaven. It may be the most underrated sci-fi book ever. Le Guin just may be the best sci-fi writer of all time, all things considered. I subscribed to your channel, and look forward to more thought-provoking videos.

    Someone may have already commented this but I highly highly recommend A Clockwork Orange. One of the weirdest, most interesting books I've ever read period, sci-fi or not. Anthony Burgess is an alien

      I have bumped it up my reading queue. When I finally have a physical copy I will read it.
      Calling Burgess an alien makes me want to read the book even more 😂.

    This is a fantastic video. Thank you for making it. Although I've got a fair bit of catching up to do compared to you, I agree with your S tiers, so now I know which books to prioritise next based on similar tastes. Your commentary is top notch. Cheers.

    Rendezvous with Rama is interesting, but nothing happens. I’d put it lower.
    Read Ubik for sure. Very weird, but stays with you.
    And Fire upon the Deep is awesome! S tier for me.
    I agree on Forever War. And I also love the ideas in Forever Peace
    I’m put Left Hand of Darkness on S tier, but not because of gender stuff. It just ready touched me.

    Speaker for the Dead is my favorite of the Ender books. An A book for me. Since you like Brave New World, I would recommend The Eyes of Heisenberg by Frank Herbert. Similar themes but handled much differently. There is a lot of hard science in the first part, so be aware of that going in. I did not expect the ending to progress the way it did. It's a very short book, but I found it interesting.

    • @JosephReadsBooks

    Fun video. Was a huge sci fi reader in the past, but surprisingly there's a good chunk here that I haven't read. I liked the caveats that you used , since there are books that just do nothing for me but I can acknowledge them as hugely influential (and maybe even well written). For example, I hate the post apocalyptic/ dystopian wasteland type settings with a passion, but clearly loads of people enjoy it. I do like the mind bending hard sci fi though.
    I'm kinda amazed that you hadn't immediately jumped to reading Fall of Hyperion after finishing Hyperion since it really was just the seat up. Such a great series. And I tip my hat to you for the God Emperor of Dune shout as well. Such a demented novel, and clever in how it resets the board in that series.
    As for what I'd add to that list, well, a favourite of mine when I read it was LORD OF LIGHT by Roger Zelazny. And I'd love to see more love for Iain M Banks, so id suggest THE PLAYER OF GAMES.

    • @JosephReadsBooks
      @JosephReadsBooks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Lord of Light was my book of the year last year. I love Zelazny.
      Player of Games is a masterpiece. I read Use of Weapons earlier this year and it was also great.

    • @gearoidosullivan356
      @gearoidosullivan356 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JosephReadsBooks Looking at the titles Iof some of your other videos, I see that you are a Zelazny fan. Always good to see. I'm still amazed there hasn't been a big screen adaptation of one of his books (especially in these days of IP). Although I did see a rumour that Stephen Colbert had a production company interested in doing an Amber TV series!!
      Since you've been doing the classic reads, and past award winners, I was wondering if you had done any Michael Swanwick? I've read a few of his books, like Jack Faust, and The Iron Dragons Daughter, but I loved Stations of the Tide. And what's funny about it is that I cant remember anything that happens in it, but I remember enjoying it each time I read it (kinda like Player of Games for me in that regard).

    A Clockwork Orange, if you've seen the movie, the book is very similar. All the dialog in the movie is word for word from the book, there's extra scenes and an epilogue that aren't in the movie but it's basically the same thing. I actually like the movie more then the book. Some people say the epilogue changes the entire meaning of the book, I don't agree with that. Alex kinda a liar and a conman, can't trust what he says.
    Ubik is good, I think "3 Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" is PKD's best book, gets lost in the shuffle when people talk about PKD.
    Also I disagree the Vonnegut only wrote sci-fi. Killgore Trout might have been a sci-fi writer but him and his stories aren't really the focus, more just in the background, usually his books are more quirky, folksy character pieces almost? It's debatable Slaughterhouse 5 is Sci-fi, depending on your interpretation of the book. A lot of people would argue all the aliens and time bending stuff is the main character having a break from reality due to his PTSD from world war 2, which I kinda lean more towards personally. Sirens of Titan, Cats Cradle, Galapagos, those are sci-fi books for sure. Time Quake tried to be a sci-fi book, but he couldn't make the concept work, so it became more of an autobio piece.

    Mostly agree. Some I would move up or down a tier. Exception for The Road - liked it but probably C tier for me. I actually liked Artemis more than The Martian so disagree there though neither would make my top 50. The Foundation, or as I now know it, The Greater Foundation, has recently gotten renewed interest from me after watching the show on AppleTV. Really want to read Asimov in the reccommened order now. The show just helps visualize some things even if the whole does not align to the books.

    I love your thumbnail so much! Crushed that The Dispossessed is D-Tier 😭. Flowers for Algernon gets a universal recommendation from me. Snow Crash has one of the best openings to a book I've ever read! I loved the first quarter of that book, but then it went a bit downhill for me with the dialogue info-dump (just not my favorite device). I'm also looking forward to Fall of Hyperion!

      King does have those little moments between characters that make him, him. It is also why his stuff is soooo cheesey on TV i think. The Road post apoc introduction? that is a heavy intro. Enderverse and Foundation was great for my teens. Wrinkle was my first favorite book.

      But if I gave an summary of:
      "The book is about teenagers forced to kill each other while being tracked by their authoritarian overlords and only one can survive."
      Which book would I be describing?
      Either way I still think it is one of the weakest books on the list.

    I remember the Hunger Games YA Dystopian copy cats, i.e Divergent, they all aged terribly (that’s what happens when writers follow a trend instead of writing their own story)
    Battle Royale is a great film (haven’t read the book yet) but I didn’t know Collins was inspired by it. I remember people accusing HG for ripping off Battle Royale tho

    • @JosephReadsBooks

      I have not watched the BR film but the book was unbearable. I want to give it the benefit of the doubt and just say the translation was bad.
      The YA dystopian copycat have a lot of sons to answer for but they were a good gateway for young readers at that time. So I will give them a pass.
