Funnily enough, the poem Monika finds of Sayori's is the one Sayori actually says aloud to the main character in one of her routes, heading to a classroom to get paper and crayons and stuff!
As much as I would want it to be an alternative reality, I feel it's more like events before the original game started. So therefore, Monika knew about Sayori's depression since Sayori trusted her and confided in her. And then once the protagonist shows up, Monika uses this knowledge about her character to dial up those negative emotions which in the end lead to Sayori's fate.
It's actually a control group simulation to compare to the main game, which is a simulation which is part of an experiment to see what happens when you give a person knowledge of their simulated reality and the means to alter it.
That’s what I was thinking too. Ironic that including these sweet moments of friendship only serves to make the original story that much more fucked up.
As someone who has dealt with severe depression for years, I really respect how little this game pulls it’s punches with the tragedy of Sayori facing her illness with her only concern being other people. It’s heartbreaking, but so unfortunately accurate

I imagine the reaction to a prankster / absent minded character that put salt in the muffins and the ending shot is him shrugging to the camera while the rest concede him the point and laugh.
That and to tear the wounds even deeper knowing how vulnerable Sayori was and the amount of trust she put into Monica to keep her from giving up. Only to know that Monica herself is the one who pushes her to die. Unless it actually is an AU

What's nice is that, while the original game gave us a touching and real look at Sayori's depression, the MC bumbled it so hard from a place ignorance and selfishness that it was incredibly frustrating to watch - now seeing Monika handle it so sweetly, encouraging her and giving her the space to express how she feels with no judgement - makes me appreciate how DDLC handles its heavier subjects with care. FriendArin could never.
Yeah I also find like... all the characters are really smart and thoughtful and emotionally intelligent in the side stories... they probably are in the main game too but I feel like because they're seen through the perspective of a dumbass MC who mostly just wants to get laid they get reduced to more like caricatures
I always find it funny how they added the "Last Time on Game Grumps" part so that the video can pass the 1 minute mark and they can swear in the episode, yet the recap includes parts where they are swearing in the previous one
It makes it so Dan and Arin don't have to police themselves, and the editor only has to edit the swearing out of clips that are already being edited anyways.
I believe Arin mentioned in one of their reaction videos (or mario maker) that censoring the first minute was an accidental benefit. They primarily switched because they took away episode numbers, so they made a new way to let the viewers keep up. But it does make a convenient buffer period

I won't lie. I was feeling very much how Sayori feels, today. Dan's words at the end made me cry. Even though they were brief and simple , you could have chosen to make a joke of it or just brush it off all together. Thank you guys for that. All I can say is that I'm glad I watched this video today.
dan and arin are absolutely right. you have more value than you think and you are worth the effort of slogging through every day and insisting on going on no matter how heavy it gets. there are always going to be bad days, but in my experience, a bad day is better than no day and a bad day is always better when you can find something to laugh and love. like grumps. im sorry you were feeling like this, but know that you ARE valuable and there are people who love you, and there will be people who WILL love you. i hope you feel better soon
I know I'm just an internet stranger with a shared interest in watching both Dan and Arin's shenanigans, but it's super brave to admit when you have these kinda days and not try to bury or push it back. I may not know you well, but I'm super proud of you and glad you are still here kicking ass. It's a tough road and there'll always be those days where it'll seem dark and just too much to go on but I've found when I have those days, it's usually the little things that'll help. There is 0 horror elements in these side stories, just incase anyone was curious. We wont get any horror unless they unlock VM2 and then its only a little.
Also something really neat: Sayori's flower poem at the beginning is a prequel to the one she performs in her route (when she talks to MC about performing poetry), where she picks "the last flower" and there's a barren wasteland in every direction

Oh thank god, there's none of that crazy, glitchy horror stuff - Now there's just the reminder that existence is painful for some people, sometimes those with the brightest smiles can feel empty inside, and that Tim Allen's noise from Home Improvement's intro can be effective with the right comedic timing.
I struggled with feelings of worthlessness for many years, and my greatest fear was disappointing other people and being a burden, so this episode hit close to home. It helped a lot to go to regular therapy, but it wasn't an overnight change, it took months, and even now I sometimes fall into old, toxic mental patterns if I'm having a particularly bad day. But overall things are much better, and I have a much healthier overall attitude to myself.
Doki doki plus reminds me how much I related to Sayori when I first watched the playthrough of this game. And it reminds me how, despite years of feeling how Sayori feels, I'm still here. Thanks for helping me stay all this time, grumps! 🧡💙
Just remember that people need other people, to enjoy the highs and to get through the lows. And most of the time people are in full control of who is and isn't in their life. So if you're in someone's life, you're not a burden. They made the choice to make a connection with you because you matter.
Honestly, I think the reason I already like the playthrough of these side stories so much is because of how genuine Dan and Arin feel. Like they don't try too hard to take the game seriously, despite the serious topics, but they don't distract from it so much that it feels like they're dismissing it. It feels just like how I assume Monika and Sayori felt. Talking out your problems with a close friend, joking as much as you can but helping as much as you need. I'm really looking forward to the next episode of this Ps, I have therapy in half an hour from when I'm writing this and I'm probably gonna show this to him because idk it's nice the video not my comment I mean but probably my comment too

Thank you, Dan, for that moment for us struggling with depression amongst other things. -- Its also wholesome when he said he felt bad about giving her such a silly voice. I really appreciate the consistency of character this game has most games like this might write the DLC versions of the characters as 100% happy-go-lucky or 100% flanderize them, thereby making them less relatable as characters but Dan Salvato actually did the heavy lifting involved with writing the side stories so that you can get to the parts where Sayori's depression becomes more apparent and it makes sense it's clear he has a solid foundation upon which to build these characters and their interactions amongst themselves, and I respect the hell out of that also I find it interesting that in showing how Sayori confided in Monika and shared her true feelings, it serves to make Monika's behavior later even more insidious than it already was, since it was Monika's intentional and malicious meddling that initially drove Sayori to do what she did

Up until about a year ago, the way I felt about myself was very similar to the way Sayori felt about herself. I used to think that my life had little to no value to others, that I wasn't adding anything or getting in the way, that I wasn't worth the trouble of being helped or saved and even that their lives would be better if I never existed. But as time went on I realized that all of that was in my head and that the people around me loved and cherished me, and that was such an amazing feeling that it brings me to tears even now. So please everyone, be kind to yourself, and know that your life is invaluable, both to yourself and to those around you. In the words of Shinedown's Brent Smith: "This world is a hell of a lot better with you in it".
I know they can’t see this but, this IS an alternate universe. This is a version of the game where team Salvation(not a typo, actually what the team in universe is called) never gave Monika admin.
a few days ago was a day where thing swere hard, yesterday i just broke doen crying from the guilt of feeling like the world would be so much better without me. I have a family that loves and carss for me and after those moments, the guilt is crushing me. If you ever think the world is better of without you, just know that its not. Dan, what you said at the end really hit close to home. I have OCD and I'm really going through it right now. I have a wonderful therapist and I am safe, but that type of thought process creeps up a lot. Even if I feel like I'm ruining my friends lives by being here, I know that it's just a feeling, and that killing myself would be so much worse for them than anything I could do while alive. Anyways, just needed to hear that, so thank you. If you're dealing with similar things, please talk to a person you trust. You're not alone and you're not a burden.
When arin says literature in the robot voice it sounds like little Richard, so at 3:53 it kinda sounds like he's saying little Richard is the key to that, and that makes me smile

For someone who struggles similar feelings to Sayori, I enjoy Dan and Arin making silly little jokes once in a while to ruin the mood. If I play DDLC plus on my own, I will just cry. This is a lot more comforting to me lmao
I think it was nice that the DLC treats the same themes with a little more real world reverence, instead of the horror of the original. On a similar note to the grumps, it's okay to just experience what Salvato wrote; you don't have to try to make everything comedic.

I respectfully disagree. While I think it is nice to experience what the game has to offer without the hijinks of the Grumps; they are, at their core, a comedy channel. So I think by the very nature of how they built the channel, they DO have to make everything comedic. That said, yes perhaps finding another channel covering the game can offer a more sincere experience of the game without detracting too much from it. But I'm here for the funny :)
It is amazing to me that every time my depression is starting to kick my ass again, the grumps say something that really helps. It is insane how many times it's happened. I know that no one is going to see this but I really needed to hear what they were saying at the end of the episode. I am so thankful for these two goofballs
Whoever writes these stories is fantastic at capturing actual human behavior and putting it into these games. Like the thing at 21 minutes where Monika tries to write and just kinda sits there with the ink splotch or whatever.
When Dan said "everytime Sayori disappears for a little while and then returns I'm like 'oh thank you'," I froze. As someone who is currently supporting a friend through an all-time-low at the moment, this story hit a little too close to home...but in a good way. It's nice to hear this said in a game that will be played by countless people experiencing something similar.
Honestly this really effected me. I've had depression for at least ten years and have made attempts before, and this week my little brother said exactly what Sayori said in this chapter. While it breaks my heart, I'm so glad that I can be a comfort for him and that ddlc can show stories like these

It's very old and the batteries are chemical ones and nearly depleted (For the people not knowing, acid-based batteries gradually lose efficiency as they go, and at the end only give a trickle of power, which has different results depending on the receiving apparel: A monitor will be less bright; a sound box will slow down), so when it was activated the sound was more and more slow and distorted, to the point it sometimes went silent for days until it produced a gravely, terrifying rumble that startles everyone in the living room. Arin's rendition of a slow malfunctioning soundbox is startlingly accurate. I immediately remembered that end-of-life banjo.
I honestly really love that the grumps aren't afraid to actually crack jokes, even during the more serious sections. It really balances out the tension and makes it less difficult to watch. I've dealt with pretty hardcore depression for most of my life and I've definitely had those same thoughts that Sayori talks about, and it's nice to be able to feel seen and supported, and then also laugh and the haha funy noise
Imagine a person with every bone of their body broken, pleading for help in the ground, and there's no angle you can approach them without causing them severe pain and suffering. That's what depression feels like for everyone involved. And that's when either one has figured out something is wrong.
I don't know who needs to hear this but... If you're hesitant to see a psychologist because you're afraid they'll judge you, don't be. A big part of their training is learning not to judge their clients. It's a mindset that is integral to their line of work.

The little message from Dan at the end after the heartache with Sayori is something I need to say to myself consciously because I have thought it would be better for everyone if I didn’t exist - several times. I am seeing a therapist, but it’s still hard for me sometimes to think otherwise
I think it would be amazing for the grumps to include some mental health resources either in the description or at the end of these videos given the nature of the content. One of my favorite resources to share is NAMI, they are an amazing advocacy group that works to destigmatize mental health conditions while making mental healthcare more accessible. They can work to link people with a mental health care professional and at least in my area offer groups that are free and open to the public for people struggling with mental health needs.
Man, depression sucks. I used to feel the same as sayori, it's just so accurate the way they wrote her lines. The feeling of being a "burden" to other people when they worried about me or did something kind for me was like an instant stab wound to the heart, because it felt like they were having to tolerate my existence. There's really no way to explain the logic of it, it was just the way my brain was wired at the time.
I absolutely love Doki Doki Literature Club mostly because of Sayori. It is uncanny how many things she says in her depression are the exact same thoughts I once had. While I did get help and made my way out of the pit, this pulls at my heart strings for the others who do still feel this way. Just remember you are not alone, your presence will never be a burden, and you can get help. Don’t listen to the little voice in your head that contradicts everything with negativity. Regardless of how big or small you feel your problem is, your feelings are valid - don’t be ashamed of your depression. Share it with others so they can experience the joy of helping you, of being your friend, your family. You are loved and a valued member of this lovely community ❤️❤️❤️
I love Dan for taking the time to be serious at the end cause Sayori is way too relatable And I love that they can go straight from serious to Tim Allen in 0.5 seconds without cheapening anything

Even though they were brief and simple , you could have chosen to make a joke of it or just brush it off all together. Thank you guys for that. Oh thank god, there's none of that crazy, glitchy horror stuff - Now there's just the reminder that existence is painful for some people, sometimes those with the brightest smiles can feel empty inside, and that Tim Allen's noise from Home Improvement's intro can be effective with the right comedic timing.

I struggled with feelings of worthlessness for many years, and my greatest fear was disappointing other people and being a burden, so this episode hit close to home. It helped a lot to go to regular therapy, but it wasn't an overnight change, it took months, and even now I sometimes fall into old, toxic mental patterns if I'm having a particularly bad day. But overall things are much better, and I have a much healthier overall attitude to myself.

Just remember that people need other people, to enjoy the highs and to get through the lows. And most of the time people are in full control of who is and isn't in their life. So if you're in someone's life, you're not a burden. They made the choice to make a connection with you because you matter.

Honestly, I think the reason I already like the playthrough of these side stories so much is because of how genuine Dan and Arin feel. Like they don't try too hard to take the game seriously, despite the serious topics, but they don't distract from it so much that it feels like they're dismissing it. It feels just like how I assume Monika and Sayori felt. Talking out your problems with a close friend, joking as much as you can but helping as much as you need.
I'm really looking forward to the next episode of this

I really appreciate the consistency of character this game has
most games like this might write the DLC versions of the characters as 100% happy-go-lucky or 100% flanderize them, thereby making them less relatable as characters
but Dan Salvato actually did the heavy lifting involved with writing the side stories so that you can get to the parts where Sayori's depression becomes more apparent and it makes sense
it's clear he has a solid foundation upon which to build these characters and their interactions amongst themselves, and I respect the hell out of that
also I find it interesting that in showing how Sayori confided in Monika and shared her true feelings, it serves to make Monika's behavior later even more insidious than it already was, since it was Monika's intentional and malicious meddling that initially drove Sayori to do what she did

Up until about a year ago, the way I felt about myself was very similar to the way Sayori felt about herself. I used to think that my life had little to no value to others, that I wasn't adding anything or getting in the way, that I wasn't worth the trouble of being helped or saved and even that their lives would be better if I never existed. But as time went on I realized that all of that was in my head and that the people around me loved and cherished me, and that was such an amazing feeling that it brings me to tears even now. So please everyone, be kind to yourself, and know that your life is invaluable, both to yourself and to those around you. In the words of Shinedown's Brent Smith: "This world is a hell of a lot better with you in it".

I think it was nice that the DLC treats the same themes with a little more real world reverence, instead of the horror of the original. On a similar note to the grumps, it's okay to just experience what Salvato wrote; you don't have to try to make everything comedic.

I respectfully disagree. While I think it is nice to experience what the game has to offer without the hijinks of the Grumps; they are, at their core, a comedy channel. So I think by the very nature of how they built the channel, they DO have to make everything comedic. That said, yes perhaps finding another channel covering the game can offer a more sincere experience of the game without detracting too much from it. But I'm here for the funny :)

When Dan said "everytime Sayori disappears for a little while and then returns I'm like 'oh thank you'," I froze. As someone who is currently supporting a friend through an all-time-low at the moment, this story hit a little too close to home...but in a good way. It's nice to hear this said in a game that will be played by countless people experiencing something similar.

This is the most emotional episode of Home Improvement I have ever seen.

It's very old and the batteries are chemical ones and nearly depleted (For the people not knowing, acid-based batteries gradually lose efficiency as they go, and at the end only give a trickle of power, which has different results depending on the receiving apparel: A monitor will be less bright; a sound box will slow down), so when it was activated the sound was more and more slow and distorted, to the point it sometimes went silent for days until it produced a gravely, terrifying rumble that startles everyone in the living room.
Arin's rendition of a slow malfunctioning soundbox is startlingly accurate. I immediately remembered that end-of-life banjo.
A lot of hilarious game grumps moments came out of doki doki like natsuki and the potatoes and such so am hoping more greatness is birthed soon 😂

I honestly really love that the grumps aren't afraid to actually crack jokes, even during the more serious sections. It really balances out the tension and makes it less difficult to watch. I've dealt with pretty hardcore depression for most of my life and I've definitely had those same thoughts that Sayori talks about, and it's nice to be able to feel seen and supported, and then also laugh and the haha funy noise
Imagine a person with every bone of their body broken, pleading for help in the ground, and there's no angle you can approach them without causing them severe pain and suffering. That's what depression feels like for everyone involved. And that's when either one has figured out something is wrong.
I don't know who needs to hear this but...
If you're hesitant to see a psychologist because you're afraid they'll judge you, don't be.
A big part of their training is learning not to judge their clients.
It's a mindset that is integral to their line of work.

The little message from Dan at the end after the heartache with Sayori is something I need to say to myself consciously because I have thought it would be better for everyone if I didn’t exist - several times. I am seeing a therapist, but it’s still hard for me sometimes to think otherwise
I think it would be amazing for the grumps to include some mental health resources either in the description or at the end of these videos given the nature of the content. One of my favorite resources to share is NAMI, they are an amazing advocacy group that works to destigmatize mental health conditions while making mental healthcare more accessible. They can work to link people with a mental health care professional and at least in my area offer groups that are free and open to the public for people struggling with mental health needs.
Man, depression sucks. I used to feel the same as sayori, it's just so accurate the way they wrote her lines. The feeling of being a "burden" to other people when they worried about me or did something kind for me was like an instant stab wound to the heart, because it felt like they were having to tolerate my existence. There's really no way to explain the logic of it, it was just the way my brain was wired at the time.

I absolutely love Doki Doki Literature Club mostly because of Sayori. It is uncanny how many things she says in her depression are the exact same thoughts I once had. While I did get help and made my way out of the pit, this pulls at my heart strings for the others who do still feel this way.
Just remember you are not alone, your presence will never be a burden, and you can get help. Don’t listen to the little voice in your head that contradicts everything with negativity. Regardless of how big or small you feel your problem is, your feelings are valid - don’t be ashamed of your depression. Share it with others so they can experience the joy of helping you, of being your friend, your family.
