I just want to say, after two years, I'm sorry to the Hunter fans for my dismissive jokes about it. I still regularly getting comments and messages about how those didn't go over well.
Don't get me wrong, I personally still don't enjoy Hunter much when put against pretty much every other option here, but it isn't a bad system. My only experience with it before this system was a real bag of farts, but I shouldn't have let that color my commentary on it here. My jokes were a little too mean spirited, and for that I apologize.
Next, fans of Beast...hi. That's all.
    ...
...ok fine, I'm sorry too. Beast doesn't have to be like how I describe it. I still don't want to be alone in a room with it, but I get it.

Hi, beast got me into this system. I just wish people could keep their opinions to themselves when it came to guides. There is a lot of articles on how its somehow the worst roleplaying system ever and this extends to just trying to find material to play the game. I'm glad people still play Beast though and that I could get my friends into it.
also yeah beasts are very terrifying so not wanting to be alone with one I can understand.

Hunter can be a Lot of fun, beast... yeah no beast deserves the hate.
And it feels weird to say it here, but this is hands down the best "how to play" video for CoD 2e. And yeah I know I'm being that guy here, but it would be amazing to get breakdowns for the mechanics of different game lines in the same manner eventually. It's so hard to find youtube tutorials for most game lines. But I'm not your boss, so do as you will.

@@clawgerber1992Beast was pretty fun when I played it.
If people are playing Beast, as with *literally* any other storytelling / TTRPG you can pick and choose what you want to deal with.
I personally don't care what my characters do, I'm simply exploring the mind and life of a fictional character, even if what they do is appalling.
If it makes sense for the character to do, they'll do it.
As a GM/Storyteller, if a player has an issue with what any other player's character does and that player's character was acting *in character*, that player with the issue will swiftly be killed off in game and removed from the group.
These characters are not your self insert.
Playing like that makes it so that when I'm the one running games, I have a pretty solid group that knows what they're getting into and don't cry about it when things they should have expected happen.
This is a horror series of game lines. It should be *extremely* unsettling and keep you up at night after a session. Maybe sometimes *multiple* nights.

    • @clawgerber1992
      @clawgerber1992 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@wastingmylifeaway4898 The more I need to change a game system to be okay with / able to run it, the lower my opinion of a game system is. The CoD game books are already fairly difficult to parse (thus my being here for the tutorial lol), even before you get to game lines such as mummy and beast which both had me toss in the towel in favor of other options.
And that is the thing, I could be playing any other ttrpg. So if I like the themeing of a ruleset that I don't want to use. I just adapt the themes to a rule set I like more.
I'm also perfectly capable of divorcing my characters from myself. Idk where you got the idea that I wasn't from.
And if you've got players having issues with each others characters, in an out of game sense, that's a player problem or failure to set the tone of the game. That's not on the game rules.

From a veteran player: Great summery but you did forget a major thing. This video is all about the 2nd edition. The 1st edition of chronicles of darkness is different in a notable way and deserves mention, especially since many people prefer it to the revised 2nd edition. I’ve played both and their are enough differences to at least let viewers know that they should be aware. If you start buying books from one edition and expansions from another, elements won’t line up. Not even the XP system lines up.

Man when I learned about Beast and read about it I was psyched and loved the concept and I'm surprised that everybody seems to hate it. • @motokuchoma

it came out around the same time someone on the white wolf team was exposed as a sexual abuser and pretended that beast is all about doing this, when in reality, you are right and said author worked on pretty much all the books. Beast has some issues in the book (notably, their opponents are one note manic zealots and are, honestly, way too weak to be real threat to the beasts) but most of it is just overblown nonsense. Whatever bad you can say about beast, you can say about the other books. But Beast doesn't have as much legacy and nostalgia

The thing is, at the time beast came out that Chronicles or New World of Darkness was already on the decline sales-wise. As far as deciding, I think you just choose a spell you know and make it a praxis spell.

The book does very little to explain, but we concluded that it can simply be a spell your capable of casting. Beit a rote or improvised spell. I have been thinking about leaving a comment on this video for awhile. Honestly, I think this is the best introduction to the game on TH-cam that I have found so far (shout out to Awkward GM Corbin for having another solid one) and I can definitely see myself showing any potential future players this video to give them a good idea on how the game works! While alot of people got introduced to White Wolf's World Of Darkness through the classic lines, my introduction to White Wolf games in general was actually from a blind purchase of Vampire The Requiem 1E while I was looking around in a tabletop gaming store as a teenager. The "New World Of Darkness" games replaced D&D for my friend group as what we always played behind the cafeteria during lunch at school. I actually didn't end up playing any classic World Of Darkness games until I was an adult. The Chronicles Of Darkness will always have a special place in my heart for this reason.
I would love it if you eventually covered all of the game lines separately, I think it would help alot of people looking to branch out into one of the game lines they have yet to try in a more digestible way than consuming another entire 300+ page rulebook first.
Either way, I am looking forward to future content, and thanks for the spectacular work so far!

Thank you, and that's a good question! The short answer is...hopefully, but I can't make any promises!
The longer answer is I love and play so many TTRPGs and want to bring attention to all of them, not to mention I love showing off VTTs and whatnot. This has lead to me having waaay too many video ideas and not nearly enough time to tackle them all, especially since this channel is 100% a hobby and work of passion.
However, even with all the many video ideas I have, tackling the various CofD books has always remained on my To-Do list, as I have a ton of love for the system and many of the settings. If and when I get around to them, I imagine I might have to approach them as shorter videos, maybe around 5 minutes each, but we shall see. I've honestly been getting a decent number of comments about this in the last couple months, which really does keep that stuff on my radar.

Not a Vampire trying to hold humanity, a woof looking for balance or a Promethean longing for it, a true monster. And if you don't like roleplaying as a monster/evil character, just don't be, the game gives you plenty of rules to survive without the need of traumatizing humans. How about the example character portrayed in the book (as in, a character the developers have designed to be something that they intend players to create themselves)? Remember that example feeding they wrote where she gets a teen-opps, I mean, frat boy to choke on his own vomit?
To say nothing of Conquering Heroes's sample characters. Like Null Snyper being a Gamergate allegory, or how several of the Hero characters are gay and were emotionally abused by Beasts as a means of making them more sympathetic (as if the only way of doing so is turning a character into an oppressed minority).

One way I've seen Geist described is "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater meets Dr. House with ghosts". You're this really zany kind of punky kind of ornery type drifter who solves issues with a combination of unlikely deduction, dry wit and being just that cool. The game assumes by default that about two quarters of all your Sin-Eaters died as a result of s "Hold my beer" moment because feeling alive above and beyond the bounds (heh) of a regular person is what how they determine to bring you back. For one reason or another you died by (rad) acts of stupidity. Now you're one of the hardest to kill splats in the setting and thus free to explore even more stupid ideas.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'd love to see an in-depth guide for Geist. The concept itself fascinates me for years, I every now and then catch myself reading the core rulebook as a fiction novel instead, imagining all sorts of situations and short stories fitting this or that explanation, but I find it a bit hard to conceive what a campaign would truly look like (same for Wraith, but more appealing in practice) and I coukd never form a group, nor have I found engaging-enough videos about it on YT, despite its conceptual brilliance and innovation. I feel like it's such a shame and waste of potential that it is not brought up and explored as much as some other classic "denizens"...

Beast hate is such an overblown meme. I'll give new people a better rundown: Beasts are people whose souls were devoured by supernatural horrors. The nightmares of others feed the horror's hunger, so you have to sate it by causing anguish. Your nightmares are more than just dreams, for the horror lives in its own Lair, a parallel world nestled in the collective fears of humanity. And these nightmares can overlap reality, distort what is real into a hellscape of your own making. All your power though will cause people to rise up against you. So how can you make sure you aren't going to be the target of a righteous crusade? Do you minimize harm? Do you make friends? Or maybe you just want to try and be so fearsome and powerful, that no amount of feeble resistance can bring you down.
Beast lets you play as monsters like Dragons or Griffons who inhabit your body. But your powers work like Horror movie slashers that bend reality around themselves. All the doors lock, supernatural darkness spreads through the place and unseen terrors gnaw at those trapped in there. If you ever wanted to feel powerful and terrifying instead of a plucky, misunderstood hero, Beast is the best way to live through that. (That is not to say Beasts have to be evil - they don't. But even beasts who want to do good, they have to feed the beast. Its very similar to how vampires have to feast on blood to survive)

8:00 Minor correction (2 years late to the party, but still).
On a Chance Die, you DO still apply the 10-Again rule. It's part of what I love about the game: No matter HOW many dice you roll, there's ALWAYS a chance of success or failure. I've personally seen someone roll THIRTY dice for an action and fail, and I've also seen someone get an Exceptional Success with only a Chance Die.

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

So, this may have been updated in later releases of the book, but on page 69 of the book I have it says...
"If your pool drops below one die, you instead roll a single chance die. The chance die only counts as a success if you roll a 10, which you do not reroll. Any other result is a failure."
Copies and pasted directly from the pdf. Again, they may have changed this ruling for future releases, so I'm happy to be corrected.

Hunter: The Vigil does not deserve such disrespect. That game slaps hard!
If you do it right, it's a game about the wake left behind by supernatural creatures. The broken families, the missing loved ones, the terrible curses and blights left behind by all the other splats.
It's about making the powerful creatures who played with you like a toy actually have to pay for once in their privileged, sociopathic lives. You know all those people you ate and woodchipped in your vampire games? Hunters are the ones who make you pay for it.
It's also about trying to put together the pieces of a world infinitely bigger than you and with far more teeth. About trying to survive and maybe make it just a little less shit. It's about building a community and supporting each other when you're preyed upon by things you barely understand. And eventually it's about turning the tables and teaching the things that bump in the night that you can fucking bump back.

(hilarious most of my groups have been mixed gamelines, it works well as long as the story teller is willing to be familiar with the various books)
I have heard good things about Deviant though, which is finally out.
Also don't feel bad about not liking Beast, I recall the community backlashing really hard when it was released so you are super not alone. It wasn't what was advertised and like you said it's basically Sociopath The Tabletop Game.
All other books give you a choice of being a jerk or not as whatever creature you play as, Beast does not. Plus the whole lack of actually being a monster of myth you might as well be some really edgy human supervillain straight out of an iron age comic book so it doesn't even fit thematically very well with the rest of the other books.

First of; you're quirky and funny and that is great! And kind of a miracle if you're trying to find a video on Chronicles of Darkness! Most people are dark and gloomy. So keep doing what you're doing and if you could find the time to make one of these wonderful videos about hunter, I would be very much obliged.

About Beast: The Primordial, you're not really wrong about the uncomfortable feeling that a lot of them just feel like jerks to play, and that is kind of the point. Beasts exist to create Fear in Humans and through Fear there are Lessons to be told.
However, even the Beasts themselves question whether they could justify causing mental and emotional trauma by brushing it off as "using Fear to teach Old Lessons", and should they (they as in the Beasts themselves) even exist in the Modern world where they ask why should Humans fear the monsters and beasts of Ye Old Times, when there are more pressing situations around them like Human Corruption, Climate Change Disasters, etc.
It mostly comes down to the "Hunger" aspect of Beasts and how your players will want to fulfill said Hungers. Choosing and Finding Beasts' prey(s) is a part of the game.
It would probably not be too surprising to know that the Nemesis Hunger is one of the most popular of the Hungers, as you could turn that Fear against Immoral Humans and deliver punishment Batman style.
You could go the Collectors Hunger and go Robinhood style, have your Beast go on high octane heists against the rich (and maybe evil).
Whispers Hunger could have you be a Beast that uses the cover of an Investigative Journalist job to uncover Human corruption that could lead to toppling corporations, resignations, or even an arrest.
Tyants Hunger could be a Beast that is a criminal with a Heart of Gold that goes after criminal organizations around the world, accumulating power, and targeting certain crime groups to exert an influence over what the crime groups could do underneath your rule such as "We can deal in weapons, but no drugs" as a crude example.
Predator Hunger might share some similarity to Nemesis Hunger Beasts.
Ravagers and Enablers are probably the two types of Hungers that will be very difficult for People to get behind. Though, with Ravagers they can target property instead of humans directly.
Enablers are their own kind of monsters within the Beasts, even if there are Enabler Beasts who don't want to do what they have to do to feed.
In a way, you can turn these Hungers into something "Good" and helpful, if that's the story you want to tell. The Beasts in the game acknowledge what they're doing may be not so useful in the Modern World. (Of course, acknowledging the Bad things you do is still not really as good as just Not Doing said Bad Things).
I will not deny the fact that this line from CofD is a bit more difficult to play due to how "Evil" your characters may have to be in order to retain this Satiety, but that's kind of the tragic beauty of Beasts. You may have kind, well-meaning Beasts who wish they didn't had to do these bad things to others in order to just Eat and Survive, and that's a tale that can be told with this story. Some Beasts even fight against their nature to the point of becoming quasi-Heroes and go on a rampage against their fellow Beasts.
You could argue that Vampires go into this too with needing to consume Blood to Eat and Survive, however WHAT the Beasts need to Eat changes a lot of things. With Vampires, they can go for many different sources without (possibly) hurting too many people. With Beasts, yeah that'll be a good dose of mental and emotional trauma.
Of course, this doesn't go into the details of the "Heroes" of Beasts: the Primordial, but they are their own large paragraphs to write about.
Beasts is my favorite lines of CofD (Mage the Awakening being second, though it is so much more complex), so if you want to talk more about it, let me know as I can be found on Twitter. I'm open to explaining why I love Beasts so much.

I havent gotten to play much of the 2e era games (other than a little bit of Demon, which is effectively 2e).
Like you I worry that I'm missing the forest for the trees sometimes when reading the rules, but as as far as I can tell, you seem to be accurate and not missing anything huge (and seem to acknowledge where there is extra detail/nuance that you glossed over).
I reckon you've helped me have some more confidence that the game does in fact work the way that it looks like it does from my reading.

What would be the system differences between the the Old world of darkness and the chronicles of darkness?

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  ปีที่แล้ว

Ok, so it's been waaay too long since I was short oWoD, so my memory is just the pits. The main difference I can recall is the dice rolling mechanics. As I states here, in Chronicles and 8 or higher is a success. In the old WoD Storyteller system, a difficulty could be set for a task ranging anywhere from...I wanna say 3 all the way up to 10. The difficulty that the storyteller set was the minimum result on a die required for it to be a success.
Beyond that, I am struggling to remember all of the little differences. There is a lot that looks really similar (the 9 attributes, skills, merits) but there are small differences throughout. Vampires in oWoD have Hunger that you need to track, Werewolves have like...3 or 4 different supernatural things to track...it feels more complicated, but that could totally be because of my lack of familiarity with the old system.

Was really hoping you would go over the 1st edition as well, since that is (in my humble opinion) the better version... but, this is a good video for me to show to my group to explain why we don't play 2nd :D. LOL. Love it!
Also, I have to say that I adored when you said "track down the werewolf that kicked my butt" the text on the screen said "get myself killed"... truer words have never been spoken, lol.

A note on dice results: You can opt to get a dramatic failure when you fail with a regular roll. This nets you a beat, which eventually results in experience points to improve your character.

Could you elaborate on how chases and clues system works. They seem like they could be cool but they're a little confusing and I can't a full grasp on the concept.
