  • The deep litter method for a chicken coop requires no cleaning out of the coop but too instead but a new layer of bedding on top of the old bedding in the coop. The last 5 months we have done that and now it is time to clean the coop.

    We have a droppings board under our roost that is wood, but has a removable, smooth rubber pad on it. I clean it off every day and take out the rubber to clean it with soap and water periodically. So easy! On the coop floor we use coffee grounds from Rural King. Any poop on it is sifted out like a cat litter box. So easy!

    Another great video. I love how you share everything! We also do the deep litter method. At first I was turning the litter every couple days, but a couple months ago, I started throwing a little bit of scratch grains in the coop every day. Now, the chickens turn it constantly. It stays dry, there is no more poop on the eggs, and I haven’t had to add pine shavings for over a month!

    The babies look so 😍 yes, it's a lot of work in spring, but worth it. After much research, when I cleaned out the coop from the deep litter method from this winter, I switched to coarse sand, and I love it! I have been doing it for a month now and I can't imagine going back to shavings. I have been wanting to do this for some time was just hesitant now I feel like slapping myself lol

      Where did you source your sand from? I read about it too but wasn't sure where to find same

      @@AcresOfAdventure you could try a smaller area 1st, like under their roost bars. If someday you want to try, I'll give you more information

    I suggest putting poop trays under the roosting bars, at about waist height. It will collect the 90% of the poop at night, and is real easy to sift and clean.

    We place a rubber mat on the floor and then put in bedding. When time to clean, we pull the mat out, take to compost pile, put it back, start over.

    We do Deep Bedding method, we change out every 6 months. We just add to it and clean it out into our manure pile twice a year. Once at Spring (we just did it 2 weeks ago) and once at the start of fall (September???)

    • @AcresOfAdventure
      @AcresOfAdventure  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @StubbsMillingCo. ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AcresOfAdventure I leave the coop door open to allow air flow other than that I treat it as I would for winter. Just add to it when it gets a little smelly and no flies, no stink and no musky wet bedding. Though it may be different for anyone else. I live in South Carolina so humidity and heat are already kicking. Today hit 80 degrees.

    Great stuff! I think we clean too much, so experimented with deep litter in my 3 small coops this winter, just putting DE & shavings over the poop. No mites and extra warmth! Spring clean & a couple of wheel barrows of fertilizer for the garden. Aw Splash Marans - only one of mine hatched, nougat, sadly died at a month old. Just hatched 2 araucana & 1 Cuckoo Marans (bantam). Best wishes from Shropshire.
