    I hear it's good to go about a month or month & half for 8-12 hens. However, a technique useful in the winter, is when cleaning it, to leave a mild lower level of poop, as the mini-compsit so to speak, acts as a minor heat source to active the higher levels of manure therefore creating a winter heat source for the milder climates.
    Diotomaceous earth, and a PDC (which is kinda like cat litter), on the lower levels, acts as an absorbent, so the poop doesn't stick so much to the floor when trying to clean. Kind of like an oil on tools to deter rust, it drys the surfaces so stuff don't stick.

    For as much as chickens don't like living in poop they like to poop all the time and wherever you think they'd learn how to use one place haha

    I use shredded cardboard and paper for my coop, stir it now and then, have not cleaned the coop in over 3 years, still no smell or problems with the deep litter, just add more cardboard

    My Rhode Island reds are 20 weeks and one day today. I give them quality layer feed beans, corn, crickets, meal worms, oyster shells, electrolytes in their water. I have a heater and supplemental light because it is cold outside. It’s almost December and I don’t know why they aren’t giving me eggs yet?

    • @FarmAlarm
      @FarmAlarm  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well I'd say you have a few things going against you. It's a combination of they are JUST now at the start of laying age, and also we're going into winter. I know you said you have a heater, but they are not affected as much by the cold as they are affected by the short days. I bet if you supplement light it will help. Add a light in the coup on a timer and add a few hours before sunrise and two to four hours after sunset. I bet you'll see a difference. Let me know how it turns out.

      I don't clean the roosting bar. I have been raising chickens for years, and I don't believe it's that big of a deal to clean the roosting bar. Hope that helps.

      Put it in a pile, let it set for a year. Then put it on your garden or trees, or anything else that grows. Great fertilizer.
