Not really, because this is a Chinese game so listening to Chinese is more suitable, similarly playing God of War in English is always more suitable, most people listen to English because they are lazy to read subtitles, personally I like to watch subtitles because it makes a movie more delicate when subtitles are added.

As a Chinese person, the mandarin version makes Wukong sound more reflective and wise. Its like he learnt many things after his journey to the west. The English version makes him sound more mischievous and playful. Both are good in their own ways tbh but I prefer the mandarin version because I feel like wukong’s character has a bit more depth that way
The original Wukong is more mischievous and playful, so that would suit him better. But yes I also prefer the Chinese version.

Well the Chinese version has a lot of slang and idioms that if one want to translate word by word, that's gonna make the dialogue twice of long.
There are also abbreviations in Chinese that make some of the dialogue more poetic and impactful imo, but they don't have 1 to 1 translations and end up with longer tanslations.
Twice? No!At least three times long! The information entropy of Chinese is too high. If you want to ensure the consistent sound length when translating Chinese into English, a lot of information will be lost.Take the police radio broadcast at the beginning of "Ghost in the Shell" movie as an example. Chinese, Japanese and English are broadcast at the same time. The length of the Japanese broadcast is twice that of Chinese, and the length of the English broadcast is four times that of Chinese.

Ah gutted it's not true. Still the Chinese guy playing monkey sounds like the fella from 86'. Ah well.
Yeah its not the actor from 86'. Real shame.
I am wondering about *Lu Bu* headgear based on this *Wukong* iteration ? 🤔
@sipenarekbecha7193 what's Lu Bu got to do with the monkey King legend?
The English dub is underrated honestly. I love the Chinese, but the way the English va said "killing my kind!" was amazing delivery too.
I also like how in the English, he sounds almost cunning, taunting, he has a very high pitch which for me associates him with like a little mischievous child lol
but the english one lost some information and meaning since Mandarin has a lot more compact words. So as someone that understand it, The English version sentence feel more bland compare to the Mandarin version which is rich in culture that relate to the story.
For example. The sentence "killing my kind" doesn't feel that deeply personal to Wukong than his Mandarin version which he said word by word as his "monkey child and monkey grandchild" Wukong always call his monkey at his island like that as they are his family and his children.
@@HoaTruong-km9rk well of course it will be. I don't know Mandarin so all that stuff will fly right over my head.
That's why Chinese people, or, people who understand Mandarin, will always prefer the Chinese version.
So because I can't focus on the meaning of the sentences, i have to focus on other things like delivery and intonation, or how convincing does the VA sound etc.
I'm currently playing on Chinese because it's the "original" and feels better to the setting and environment, but I'm so excited to start a second playthrough in English as well. Get the full experience and all lol
I agree, i’ve never heard Chinese before so it’s very off for me but I can appreciate the darker tone too. @@RonLarhz As for the 灭我猴子猴孙 translation, that's what I meant by Chinese is the platinum experience. Chinese simply is just able to contain more information per syllable.
The fact is words like genocide would be really out of place since it's pretty much a modern word that existed for less than a century. Having Wukong saying that would've been super OOC.
@@nekomancer4641 I agree, English dub did a fantastic job to stay true to the original Chinese voice and tempo as much as they can. The purpose of translating a heavily cultured literature story bound by the timing of the cutscene, is to maintain the essence of the character and pace of the story. It's more important than spending 5 seconds to prolong the translation for one line when the original was said in 2 second. They add up and take away the resources to remake the cut scene for each different language.
Game Science producer did a fantastic job on focus on the big picture but maintaining the heart of the story telling. This just shows the game's success is not a fluke. It's a conscious decision to not alienate players that didn't know the original story, but don't mind learning it on their own as long as it's not over explaining and treat it like a literature study while playing the game. 成大事者不拘小节

As a chinese american who plays in the chinese dub, honestly the english dub isn't that bad. However, growing up Wukong always has his unique voice and speech tendencies, and it just feels out of place not hearing his voice. Like I kinda feel like you aren't getting the full experience and are missing out on
i originally put it on chinese bc i like to experience things the way they were originally intended, and i wanted to be more immersed etc
but if im fully honest, after this first cutscene i swapped it to english. like, the voice actors are great but the thing is its rlly hard for me to experience it in chinese bc i cant pick up on tone, inflections, any subtle voice acting work, because chinese is such an incredibly different language to english or any language i know that it just sounds like noises to me. since tone and pitch movement is so important in chinese, it means the way its spoken is completely different, i cant understand the emotion behind the speech
sorry if this sounds bad but to me as someone who understands 0 chinese it just sounds like gibberish to me and i feel like i was missing out on the voice acting work. the english honestly isnt bad tho, i quite like sun wukongs voice, so i think ill stick with that for now

The English VAs did a good job, I think it’s just that for many Chinese people Wukong’s Chinese cadence is a huge nostalgia trip
My Chinese isn't perfect, but as an example of some nuances that may be missed
0:20
"The oldies up there don't trust me? I know." (Almost as if he's a little upset/mad that after all this time they still don't trust him)
Then when he says "I understand too." It's more literally "I know (that) too," but with the subtext of "I'm not that dumb. I also understand why you grunts are here," while sounding slightly exhasperated, and almost annoyed. Even laughing at the fact that they'd try to make him come back, because we all know that's not what he wants.
But emphasis on the delivery of the "I know" parts. The change in emotion/tone affects the impact of the third line, where he doesn't know why they slaughtered his kind. (Edit: The innocent had nothing to do with our quarrels, so WHY?!)
Kind of the way I see it(not 100% accurate)
Chinese (ups and downs)
Disappointment>Disbelief>Disgust/Anger
English (a build up)
Aggravation>Annoyance>Anger
I would like to clarify I've only seen clips so far and I think the English localization is amazing. Sometimes you just can't translate 1 to 1 though😢
Another thing, being tone
2:48
In Chinese he has a much calmer tone throughout.
3:00
He says something more along the lines of
"Brother Yang, Don't worry (you can rest assured). In a moment I'll pluck out that extra eye of yours, and I'll leave you the other two for now (Hinting he'll probably take them later). Because I want you to see how I slaughter..."
Both Chinese and English sound sinister, but think of it like John Wick vs The Joker. One sounds sinister due to the threats made so calmly with slight bursts of anger, while the other is spoken in a sinister way. I'm quite sure even without understanding Chinese you can hear the tone differences.
Chinese is an ancient language, many words are difficult to be translated into English in a precise and beautiful way. Many Chinese words(especially ancient words) will lose their original meanings, or you can only translate them into simple English words. If you want to translate each Chinese word very precisely, English text will be too long.
@@nightismonochromethis is so cool
Neat breakdown
As a native Mandarin speaker myself (not as fluent as when I was a kid), I definitely stick with the Chinese voice. It's like any video games, original voices will always show more emotion and deeper meaning to dialogues than any other language dubs, plus it matches the appearances of characters more and sometimes different regions have different kinds of voices, which kinda ruins it if dubbed in other languages (plenty of jrpgs suffered this in Eng dub for example). Chinese is probably one of the hardest language to translate and dub over, especially when it comes to idioms, proverbs and expressions. I agree with you that the English localisation is close enough. At least they didn't "dublate" like what's happening with Ni No Kuni and FF7 Remake/Rebirth games.
As someone speaks native level Chinese, the English voice over made an excellent job with the whole team, I even chuckled as WuKong mentioned those celestial guards as "knuckle heads", emotionally and physically spot on😊 Amazing jobs done
It’s like choosing to read LotR in English or Chinese, something’s always lost in translation
中文还是能容下备注的,中文的翻译书比原版薄很多
Honestly, the people complaining about the English voice actors are just trashing them for no reason. They really are trying their best to show respect both to the creators of the game and their culture. This IS great voice acting because there is genuine passion in the delivery of their lines, and every quote feels like it's being told by a wise figure, as it should be. I'm not going to compare the two because of cultural differences, I'm saying that they're both high quality.
EXACTLY
In my opinion, this is one of the best dubs I've heard in a while
its really not bad in my opinion either, its just that for people like me who grew up watching shows with the monkey king it just doesn't sound like the same character when he's speaking differently and doesn't have his famous and unique voice. It's kinda like if Mario stopped sounding like Mario and stopped saying his signature voicelines, it would feel weird for old fans even if new fans don't have a problem with it.
English was fantastically done, but it can't compare to the Chinese VA who lives and breathes the character for decades.

As a Chinese who lived in America and Australia for more than 5 years, I have to say, the voice actor did everything they can do.
The English dub made Wukong like a bad guy. Right. But the problem is, Wukong is speaking with a technique called "HEAD RESONANCE" in the Chinese dub, like what they did in the TV series. This technique was usually used in Chinese traditional opera. Head resonance can make your voice high but not hysterical, sharp but not evil.
However, nobody in the world speak English with head resonance. The voice actor did their job with "CHEST RESONANCE", which can make your voice sounds like a Disney princess. And they have to use a sharp voice to have the features of monkey noise. That triggered the disaster, because such voice usually come out of the most vicious villian's mouth, like Crazy Ivan from the C&C: Red Alert.
Some Chinese words lose their meaning when translated into English, but this English translation is very good. Many friends want to learn Chinese. The history of Chinese is self-evident. It is not easy to learn. At the same time, friends are welcome to visit China. Even if you don’t know Chinese, it doesn’t matter. Chinese high school students generally speak very good English. By the way, friends who are learning Chinese should understand how Chinese high school students feel when learning English. Learning a foreign language is really difficult!

《西游记》is way much deeper and subtler than the difference among a few words or sentences. Even a native Chinese speaker cannot understand the whole picture of this long story. There were so many cultures from domestic, India and the mid-east area.
The Chinese usually contains intensive information in short sentences, which English translation cannot express the same meaning in the limited time. So that’s why even players who understand both English and Chinese said Chinese version is better. But the English translation team did a good job and there seems no space to make it better.

I think the subtitles are a bit hard to ready, otherwise most would elect to play the original language. The English isn't bad but it loses a lot nuance, and not like you can get those if you don't understand the language anyway. I wonder if it's better if they allow the English dub to westernize some of the dialogues. Lines like "He's a monkey with merits" feels out of place. The original basically means Wukong is a decorated veteran of the heavens. With Merits don't really bring the same meaning.
Thought this would be terrible, but no, the English actually sounds really good.
As a native mandarin speaker and also a english speaker, I say that there are actually a lot of missing meanings when translating the game from chinses to english.
I want to point out that mandarin is the form of how we pronounce the chinese characters, and Traditional chinese or simplified chinese is how the characters should be written or shown.
As a result, it is defintely worth learning mandarin or even reading traditional chinese for this game! (pls pin me to the top pls😍)
Both are really good
I mean, obviously the chinese voices are the perfect fit for the characters, but the english dub is okay; it’s obviously not going to transmit the very same emotions in every phrase, but it’s a very good quality dub; too bad the subtitles are so small tho, it’s very difficult to play in chinese and try to read every dialogue while fighting
Chinese makes you feel more immersed and more OG experience, but if you aren't understanding it, there are many parts where a character speaks while you move around/explore and I can't always look down to read the subtitles. My brain has eventually learnt to just block every line spoken, and it just becomes annoying voices in the background and I might miss many things/lore/immersion narration. So I had to go back to English
English dub is good but since I grew up listening to the chinese VA I personally feel like the chinese is how it's supposed to be. But the english VA also understands what makes a good wukong voice.
The English really well done! The nuances and the high pitches is reminiscent of the Chinese style
English is fine, but if the subtitles were better I'd play it in Chinese.
Luckily i can understand Chinese enough haha
Thought its really classic n old way of Chinese
Being one of the story connoisseur, I beg differ. This scenario, as example, Erlang Mandarin is overly theatrical, contrast the British English which actually brings the true nature of Erlang character. In fact another example of Lady Dragon Kang Jin suffers same problem in Mandarin contrast in British English.
二郎人实际上是个好人
Most people didnt give the english VA a chance itll grow on you and if you saw chapter 5 ending cutscene you’d realize how much the VA truly fits wukong
I agree, considering all the mouth movements is animated for speaking mandarin anyways
Same reason I switch to original languages in some games, I just don't like how English isn't in sync with their mouths.
Yeah that's my biggest take away from this. Normally I go dubbed just because it's hard to play the game and read subtitles, especially during action. But the lips not matching up with the audio might drive me crazy. Same reason I can't stand dubs of films or shows(that and the compromised translations used to try and match lips).
as someone who speaks both languages, the english version sounds weird. its like they kept the chinese inflections but didnt give him the accent
4:12 this is such an anime moment. My favorite so far.
The mandarin VA got this Chinese traditional opera-y tone that sounds dramatic, resounding, and squeaky at some point, which really brings out the character of an untamable monkey.
I really enjoyed the Chinese voice-over, but the subtitles are so tiny that I have trouble enjoying the scenery and reading on my big screen.
唐三藏:指的是好命的人,一直有人在幫他處理事情
孫悟空:有能力的人,專門在解決問題的人
豬八戒:挑播是非,專門在製造麻煩的人
沙悟淨:指的是一般大眾,能力普通,但也安份守己
Same reason why you watch anime with subs
There is a beauty in the original chinese dub, where they speak in sentences formed like poetry, not just "simple mandarin". A pity those who chose to play it in english dub, that part of the immersion is gone. Would you watch anime in english dub?
Yes cause I don't understand Japanese. How immersive can Chinese dub be if you can't even understand what they're saying.
I watched most things dubbed for a huge part of my life and only switched to sub because you could watch faster or their was no dub.
And yes I would if they just feel better, like Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy or Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. While I watch most anime subbed, also because I do often think it's better, I do prefer games dubbed, because it somehow feels better.
Like Armored Core feels wrong without the english dub to me. And even most anime games do. But a game like Yakuza for example feels only correct in japanese for me.
Immersion is never a selling point to me, I just prefer one over the other that's it
Prob main difference is that you watch the anime, so you can afford looking down to the subtitles. Whereas in Black Myth Wukong, there’s the interactivity actively paying attention to the game whether in combat or not, and in the heat of the battle you can’t always read the subtitles without diverting your focus and attention.
Yes, people watch anime in dub. Stop pretending like it’s a taboo thing
Also, video games and tv shows are two totally different mediums
How am I going to understand the poetry if I can't tell what they are saying
Lmaooo
Not understanding a word they are saying in Chinese aside, there's just something about the Chinese speech making it sound super chill most of the time. Especially when Wukong calls them "bastards" for killing his kind or how he'll pluck out an eye, just by the tone of his voice, it's sort of difficult to tell how angry or threatening Wukong is trying to be.
The English version might not be the best(it's not bad either), but the extra emotion in the voice intonation(and just understanding what they are speaking...duh), makes it simpler to enjoy the dialog, without having to hyperfixate on reading, looking at facial emotions and catching slighter tone pitches in the Chinese voices.
To make a comparison to my point - You know how people say, that Germans sound angry all the time? Well, I find Chinese to be the polar-opposite and Chinese speech sounds chill all of the time.
Trust me, westerns. My Mather tongue is Mandarin and I also speak English. The VA level of Chinese dabbing is top level. Just play it in Chinese please. This game is probably the best we Chinese created in many years. Please feel the game in its original taste.
As a Chinese native speaker, I can tell you the Wukong's English voice actor did a 10/10 job. Erlong's English voice is more sexier than Chinese one. Also, Kang-jin star's English version sound better too.
中文的信息载量要比英语多 英文版很难真正理解中文的很多细腻表达
@@ericxu3860 OP is talking about a different aspect of the voiceover
Playing with ENG subs n Chinese audio is a must.
Man the fights and cutscenes are too beautiful for me to constantly roll my eyes to read subtitles.
Torn between CN and EN because of this
Really loving the translation work on Black Myth Wukong. Anyone else using Immersive Translate to get through some of the trickier in-game dialogue? It’s been a huge help.
bro needed 5 giants, a whole army, and the strongest warrior that the Heavenly Palace could get to take him down.
truly a legend 🔥🔥
There simply is no acceptable English translation of "俺老孙“ .
true. English is very limited.
不能同意更多!
The English voice acting is absolutely incredible and the actors clearly poured their hearts into the performances. If English is your native language, I highly encourage you to play the game in English.
They literally give iff the same vibe😂 like bruh do people just hate english as a language or sum. The Chinese sounds liek a standard chinese voice and accent but English sounds unique somehow and fits wukongs personality wayy better. If yall think wulong is this Shadowy "cool" character type then ur wrong lol. Granted his reincarnation that you play as through the game is a silent cold badass 😈 and according to multiverse theory in fiction which technically can't be argued as it's fiction then it's canon and it's the only I continuity Thats been made I believe. So there you have it latest version of sun wukong is a silent cold badass
Standard ? Bruh the voice of Wukong in Chinese sounds exactly like the his voice in the original series, those who actually know Wukong would instantly recognize the iconic voice, while the english dub just sounds like a try hard copy cat lol, unique where lmao 😂 ?.
@@DccAnh”Try hard copy cat”? What?
My brother in Christ, isn’t he supposed to sound like Sun Wukong, but in English? If he sounds like he is copying the Chinese voice actor, he is doing a good job.
@@edmarcamy well he try a bit too hard, the voice doesn't sound as good.
傲慢的西方人,希望你能明白,悟空哪怕只是一只猴子也是中国猴,一只东方猴。请不要肆意暴露出你们的海盗本性。
THE FACT THAT HE IS VOICED BY THE 86 WU KONG MAKES THIS SOO MUCH BETTER
I love both! But , I grew up playing Tenchu Stealth Assassins and the voice acting brings me back to that game. Almost Nostalgic.
1:41 "是封过佛位的猴子。。”
This line already make it so intense n hook me in
Usually people that have attainedd Buddhahood won't be actingg like thiss , so itw something new
And its not journey to west however withh ref to it in the entire game
The game takes place after the entire story of Journey to the west, so it's an original story
@@kusiosine9868 yup
people who obtain Buddhahood would mostly go into seclusion, working in a government like courthouse is not seclusion.
gotta say the English version is surprisingly good
The Chinese dub fits more.
It really sounds like the Wukong i used to watch.
I started in Chinese then switched, normally I find the native language adds, but found the English just as good
Is it just me or do both of them sound good with the voice acting?
Similar case of terrible sourcing Anime Dub compare to Anime Sub. Although it's not as bad, since the actors/actresses' voice actually fits quite nicely. Just completely missing the Chinese up and downs emotional Cadences. Wukong should be a highpitch clown. It's what most of us chinese fans are accustomed to(simliar to Japanese to animes)
Except that would make Wukong sound like there's something wrong. Putting one languages itonations on another almost never sounds good and alienates the native speakers - in this case this dub is aimed at western English speakers (same if applied in reverse).
There's a video on here of someone applying Korean and Mandarin intonations onto English and it sounds really weird especially to a native English speaker. Making tonal adjustments is actually part of localisation and just as important as translating or replacing turns of phrase into something understandable to the target audience of a dub. It'd be weird and maybe jarring if someone spoke to you in Mandarin with Russian intonations wouldn't it? Same reason it's changed here (and the fact the west doesn't have the history with Wukong or his 'voice' that his homeland obviously does) 😅
@@rabbitguts2518 你说的完全正确。但问题的核心不在这里,而是中文难以完美的转化成英文,这是没有人能解决的困难。
I'm doing my first playthrough in English for the sake of convenience. I'll do my second in Chinese when I know enough about the story to only glance at the subtitles every so often.
I would love to play this in Chinese. Except the language itself feels like a hammer is hitting my head with every word
Yes it’s quite unpleasant
I'm so glad I know chinese to enjoy this game, the item descriptions are literal poetry. Playing it in english misses about 30% of the wording charm in it, which shows how good this game is if it still impresses the english audience.
It’s always better to listen to the original language with subtitles if you can’t understand it.
English dub isn’t that bad. They seem to have tried their best to be respectful to the original. But Chinese dub is just so much better.
Just like how anime is better in Japanese.
