This is what real music is. No means to slander current generation artists but they seem so much more artificial than the songs of the past. So much more soul can be seen in this performance it sends shivers down my spine.
I know what you're saying and I feel the same way, but at the same time I think there are contemporary artists writing and performing new music on this level all the time. But of course the thing is they just don't get airtime or celebrated at all because the lowest common denominator is what sells.
I really don't remember Antonio Carlos Jobim's music being appreciated except for the years 1966 and 1967. That's like 57 or 56 years ago. For most of my life I've been the only fan of Bossa Nova that I know of. When I first listened to Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66, I had been a dedicated fan ever since. I first heard "Waters of March" on the Sergio Mendes & Brazil '77 Vintage '74 (1974) album. Then I became a fan of Basia. And I had been extremely pleased when she made her own version of "Waters of March". By this time (1990), Bossa Nova has really become a forgotten genre. I now had only Jazz as an available genre. So I next heard Susanna McCorkle's version of "Waters of March". I then started listening to Swing Out Sister, considered as Sophisti-pop genre. Their lead vocalist Corinne Drewery recorded "Waters of March" with a Japanese vocalist, Akiko Yano. The last time I heard "Waters of March" was by Eliane Elias. And now Jane Monheit. This song will continue to be recorded by even the next musical generation.
Singing a beautiful song like "Waters of March" can multiply a vocalist's talent exponentially. There are many singers that have performed this song and every one of them sounds great.
Just found put my dear Professor Michael Hollander died 11/11/2015 and this was his favorite song. Listened as an eulogy, celebrating his beautiful spirit, he gifted me a lasting impression of beauty of this world, stream on, love always, friends forever. Brilliant star, A new season, the next spiritual world, dance then, virtuous & glorious. You performed, I reacted, we communed, Rosemarie Rubinic Turner, 1980-1981 Pratt, Higgins Hall stage, images impressed in my memory, architectural images on the big screen captured in the season of my young career. Blessed is the spot, the city , the heart, the refuge, where we experience Thy wondrous manifestation----Bogoslavinja
an incredible performance by Jane, so joyous and carefree, and all those acrobatics without missing a single note... i can't get through this without breaking up. This is the 100% definitive version of Waters of March in English, it's crazy that it hasn't got several million views. I did a cover effort of it myself on my YT channel on keyboard/vocal, because Jane's interpretation is so brilliant that it deserves to be imitated by hundreds of other artists... come by and take a listen if you have a minute. Peace.
Thank you for taking the time to comment on it. Yes, I posted this video because, in my humble opinion, her rendition of this classic is possibly only 2nd to the original, as sung in Portuguese and English here: th-cam.com/video/wBEesrdaRog/w-d-xo.html , dare I say, even better, probably how The Sundays sung Wild Horses better than the Rolling Stones (imho and why I have it on my channel) and Susan Boyle singing 'I Dreamed a Dream' at her audtion for Britain's Got Talent and it is truly amazing to this day. Not only that, but Ms. Monheit was looking about as Jessica Rabbit sexy as one could look if that's what she was going for. If that was a cartoon, she'd have that classic circular spotlight on her and a wolf at the table whistling and eyes coming out of his head! Here, had to make you a picture after that, lol: i.imgur.com/YkPor0s.jpg - LOL! You got me laughing here. Thanks again and I'll be sure to check out your own videos of you playing and singing at the piano. :)
I'm diggin it... I feel ya on this one. :) Much more sensual. I think I could render it better at this tempo than TH-cam does streaming. :) I think 80% might be the magic number! THANKS!
been lover of jazz but never heard of Jane sometimes spelled MONET MONHEIT but i do agree shes a "torch" singer (term used by managers of nightclubs) ive heard versions done by spanish-portuguese mainly by brazilians. Try Astrud Gilberto, Joan Chamorro Grp seek younger gen Alba Armengou + Andrea Motis

I have heard her in New York, end of winter 2005 at the Blue Note NY. It was the real thing, magnificent. Definitely NOT a "torch" singer. Amazingly skilled, she played with the dynamics of her voice which had a pure tone.
My son Shawn Colton me about her and I learned I like Jazz I am one of those people I listen but pay no attention to who is singing Her I will remember
Cant hold a long note, examples like barbra streisand , melissa manchester, ann wilson. Those are singers that blow you away with their range. This singer is mediocore at best. She doesnt have the power in her voice.
What a voice- what phrasing! The best performance I’ve ever heard of The Waters of March.
I never, ever listen to this song without my eyes misting up. God bless Tom Jobim for leaving us with this masterpiece.
If this is not recognized as a brilliant song sung by a brilliant singer with a brilliant group and arrangement, then all is lost.
She nails it. Fabulous interpretation.
All the beauty of the universe is captured here.
And we get to be a part of it ❤
It's hard to find more mesmerizing performance of any song than this...

It's such a beautiful song. I cant go more than a week without giving it a listen

Dont see anything special about her. She doesnt hold long notes. Now that is a testament to a great singer.
Águas de Março! 🇧🇷 Great version, beautiful voice.
Oh my she KILLS it!!! I think I have a new favorite version of one of my top favorite songs.
Holy Cow! Sensational, Jane! Extraordinary example of musicianship and memorization.
Thank you, Jane you made my day!
What an incredible moment in time
My favourite singer and my favourite tenor player(Mr Frahm) together !!!!!!!!!!
Woow I love this delicious song.. and the girl is absolutely gorgeous!
she does such a great job with this song ! and what a great "feel good" song.
A great--and very underknown--jazz singer doing justice to what I consider one of the best songs ever composed.
Beautiful
A beautiful bird just flew into my heart. Did you feel her joy ? This is her song no one can touch that.
A+ performance, outstanding
Gorgeous woman with the most beautiful voice !

Genius!

Jane's or Basia's - I can't decide which interpretation is better.
What a babe. Holy smokes.
Just watched this again after a long time. Damn if she doesn't look like the living version of Jessica Rabbit here! :)
Swear to god, I just said this before scrolling down.

Peter Zwart It's called uptempo. Get over yourself.
Can someone fix this guy’s caps lock?
I remember the first time i heard you do this. This song IS you. Such control of your voice. Playful. Silly.
