    Interesting video. Never thought of using other types of glue before. I have always used the yellow wood glue for everything.

    Just received a CA blue kit from Amazon. Came with 3 plastic bottles of 1 to 3 oz of glue. Light , medium and thick viscosities. Also a spray bottle of activator. Repaired some rot in mullions in a screened porch.
    Dug out the rot, patched in a 2x2 block to replace the rotted section. Used titebond yellow glue, the CA glue kit had not arrived until the base repair had arrived. Testing the CA glue by glueing two pieces of shim wedges together. Very carefully applied a line of CA to one side of a wedge and sprayed the accelerator to the other wedge. The fun began.........squeezing the two wedge pieces together to create a 1/4 x 3 1/4 filler to add to the base 2x2 in mullion I was repairing. The glue sets instantly...and I mean instantly. Like 1 second. There was no moving one of the two pieces of wedge shim to achieve the desired thickness to fill the gap on the vertical mullion. Amazing product. I had two fingers stuck together and blotches of CA glue here and there on my fingers on both hands. The fingers were stuck firmly together but with lightening action I was able to pry the finger apart with quite a bit of pain. Glue was on the various fingers in about 5 spots. Each about the size of a dime, in spite of trying to work carefully. Two hours later I had scraped the glue spots off almost entirely. The purpose of this description of how not to glue a simple sample together. WEAR GLOVES. WEAR GLOVES WEAR GLOVES.......!!!!!! When working with this material. Do not depend on the spray activator staying exactly on the line of glue, or the glue staying inside the bottle. You will get one, repeat....ONE effort at glueing anything together. There will be no,, repeat. NO time to slide and align the two pieces around once they touch each other. Did I mention... wear gloves ??? Hopefully you will go back and read this warning again before you head to the Emergency room with several fingers glued and everyone laughing at you. Practice the desired procedure before committing to actually trying to glue two objects together without becoming a part of your project. GOOD LUCK
    JoeB

    Question - you say not to use a hot glue gun, but lots of expert turners use them for attaching waste blocks to pieces of wood for turning. Is it safe to do so? Thanks

    I'm curious about what glue to use when you have a situation where heat is introduced, such as when making a pizza peel out of wood? I realize that the peel wouldn't be in the oven for very long but still, is there a preferred glue for something like this that will come into contact with some high heat?

    • @FineWoodworking
      @FineWoodworking  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +garriv777 No specific high heat glue that I know of but if you are very worried about it (with a pizza peel I wouldn't be) I'd lean towards epoxy.

    Well, how about explaining "yellow glue." Are all those titebond glues yellow? What is the difference between those and elmer's wood glue which is white. And nothing said about hide glue. What do they mean on glue bottles when they say not for weight bearing? Would that apply to trying to glue on a broken leg on a piece of furniture, which of course has some weight? This is a break, not a leg that had a dowel and came loose. Not at a joint.

    This woodworking book “pepe amazing plan” (Google it) has a great deal of information about woodworking. There are several designs in the book however it is primarily explaining the procedure of how you can do various things and what devices to use to accomplish them. In general, this book fulfilled my basic desire to find out about wood working.

      hot melt glue is also good for wood working in certain applications. it's not just for crafts. they make dual temp guns and they recommend the high temp for wood working. I wouldn't use it for all my wood working but there are absolutely scenarios where its the right glue for the job. A lot of counter top manufacturers use it to glue luan strips together to make a hard template. just one example. I get the impression that this is a tight bond commercial. it's good stuff but not the only stuff.
