Why You DON'T Need a Dual PC Streaming Setup

  • Provoked Prawn here with a slightly controversial opinion probably, on why you don't need a dual PC setup. It's my opinion, based on experience, that a two PC setup isn't necessary for streaming. Modern PCs are perfectly capable of both recording and streaming footage at good quality and with good results too. It's also possible to adjust various settings in both OBS and Windows (if you have the right hardware) to result in a different recording to your stream. This means you can record without an overlay and camera and with separate audio tracks, so you can create all sorts of different content with ease.
    My experience is that it's possible to do all this with a single PC and without having a negative impact on your FPS performance or the smoothness of gameplay. Obviously this is going to depend heavily on your gaming machine and the spec of it, as well as your broadband and your OBS settings. BUT I've been doing it for years with a number of different PC builds, including lesser specced systems. So I believe it's perfectly plausible to do.
    If you think I'm wrong and you DO NEED a dual PC setup, then please let me know why!

    I have a 1080ti PC that will become my 2nd PC, while I'm waiting for my 3080 PC to arrive. I'm sure most people don't need to buy 2 PCs in one go for streaming, especially when you can even use a basic old laptop with an elgato. 1 PC works, 2PCs work better

      @@ReedSolutions you can use a mini-PC the most cheapest way is to use 4core 4 thread N95 (12th gen) and use Quick-Sync, you can even attach the mini-PC at the back (vesa mount) of the Monitor, yeah it will look like an All in One PC.
      I you want to add a lot of overlays then you can get a mini-PC w/ higher specs like a 5800H and use x264 if i remember correctly it will perform on the par or equal to a ryzen 3700x (desktop CPU).

    As a person that has been on both sides of the fence, I see purpose in both options. I prefer a single-PC setup for simplicity, but it does involve certain specs to do streaming and gaming well. Dual PC worked well for me to start streaming with lower-end equipment and job distribution. I had a 9 year old computer handling my stream before it had temp issues I only recently diagnosed, to give you an idea how it was. :) In the end, it's probably preference and equipment dependent, but I don't see one as being "better" than the other.

And if your doing high fps shooters it will result in low clarity artifacts and pixelated if your doing any talking heads you should be fine with about any hardware and would mainly rely on camera hardware

    Hi Provoked Prawn,
    Thus, I can have two gpus in one case as long as the motherboard allows it.
    Question:
    Can I use two gpus, one for recording and one for gaming?
    And, if this is possible, which of the two gpus that are connected on the motherboard should be used with the display port to show the picture on the monitor?
    GPU (Primary) is showing the gameplay on the monitor and GPU (Seconday) records the gameplay. Thus, one is using its resources on gaming and the other only on recording. Is this correct? And if so, does the GPU (Seconday) need to connect to the monitor as well or there is no need?
    Kind regards,
    Ioannis Pantoglou
    P.S.: My guess is that you need to have your GPU (primary) connected to the monitor for it to be used for the gaming task. And, when you open OBS, you can use GPU (Secondary) for the enconding without the need for it to be connected as well on the monitor. This way GPU (Primary) focuses on gaming and GPU (Secondary) focuses on recording, and encoding.

      I've ran into problems with 2 gpus with a weird fix. Running the first GPU for gaming and 2nd monitor like normal. The 2nd GPU only worked if I plugged it in to a 3rd monitor and mirrored my first (the one I game on) obs just would not let me use the 2nd to encode no matter what I tried. Modern PCs are ex-pen-sive. Dual PC streaming setups allow you to use slightly older PCs, with MUCH MUCH more affordable parts and stream games on those older parts because the performance is spread out between the two PCs.
    TLDR: It's easier to stream at excellent quality with less money with Dual PC setups.

  • @OLDM4N-DE
    @OLDM4N-DE ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For me it was still that one PC, what I was using for many years, aside from some graphics update end of 2022 (3070 Ti) and some drives over time, its still the same old i7 8700k & 32 GB Ram. Its still fine for gaming, and depending on how high settings you do and what you play, some 4k is still fine too. But the CPU is not the latest, obviously. So when I tried to also run OBS and streaming etc. and gaming at the same pace, it wasnt a good experience at all. Lucky me, my gf has her PC in the same room, so the idea of the 2 PC Setup for Streaming came into place. Problem is, its still a very small or rather narrow room. So working with a green screen behind me (otherwise you see a ugly cupboard wall), its really tight to make that all work that way, because its like 10 cm behind my chair and the green screen is not even 10 cm away from the cupboard wall. So all is very narrow. Not really made for Streaming etc.
    Back then, my had her PC in the living room, and with that, i would have more space and could setup the desk etc rather in the width of the room, instead of now at the wall. That way I would have the space to setup things different, so space would be used better & available. But because all was set to the idea of 2 PC Setup, where her PC was the streaming PC, capture cards etc. were purchased etc. to make it work that way. If for that i would move her stuff out into the living room, that would leave quite some cables i wouldnt know how to get into that room.
    So, if i would have had money lying around, i would do some upgrade with other Hardware (CPU, Mainboard, RAM, Cooling), i would be able more to handle game & stream on the same machine. Unfortunately i cant afford that, which currently makes the 2 PC version of that plan the only viable. But i really am glad you can do it the way you have it. ;) I wish i could do that too.
    Cheers m8
    P.S: You have probably the most calming voice i have ever heard :D

    I see that m.2 RAID adapter in your system just above the fans. I have been holding off on using one of those specifically because I figured it would either block the case fans or the graphics card fans. How does that work out for you? Seems like you have only the bottom fans for intake as well. I'm using an O11 Dynamic with bottom intake and top and back for exhaust so that's pretty close to your fan setup.

    • @JadeIsler
      @JadeIsler ปีที่แล้ว

      he put his radiator in the side in push-pull as intake to compensate; with those as intake and the four exhaust the airflow is still excellent and I imagine the impact to GPU thermals was minimal (1-3c). I just added a capture card under my 3090 in my Fractal Torrent with the two 180mm's as bottom intake (one now blocked off by the capture card) and the effect was 0.5-1.5c increase on my GPU from 70c to 71c with a 450w vbios / OC. Those fans + the 420mm front-mounted AIO in push-pull keep enough air moving to where it doesn't really matter; his system seems to be configured similarly.

    • @TheProvokedPrawn
      @TheProvokedPrawn  ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't cause problems really. I have the rad fans on the side as intake as well and I get about 65 degrees max on the GPU. It is a great case for cooling.

      @@Oceanborn712 if they're push-pull, the air doesn't heat up enough to make much of a difference. Plus there's no other way to get an AIO in a torrent or peak CPU temps on one in a 011. Rn CPU's are hotter than GPU's so it makes sense if you have a good heatsink on your card

    also i don't wanna stream DanceDanceRevolution on TH-cam either because 1 it's already hard to get a gameplay of DanceDanceRevolution up for obvious reasons...... so u can imagine what it'll be like if u tried to stream a game like DanceDanceRevolution on TH-cam even if tha vods are turned off and it looks like same goes for Twitch too at some point with DanceDanceRevolution! however i trust no platform with a game like DanceDanceRevolution but i haven't been harassed by tha staff at Dlive for it so it's a plus but i'm always have a backup platform just in case so yea....
    don't even get me started on Facebook streaming....
    so it was why i was forced to have a Dual PC setup with capture cards with its own seperate mass HDD just to store vods, now i don't boot off a HDD, i boot off a SSD it's just i have a 8TB just dedicated to VODS on its seperate PC because i didn't wanna interfere with my game installs on a single PC setup which i got tired of and plus i also got tired of tryin' for finding capture for OBS when i'm tryin' to stream on tha same PC i game on as well which it's frustrating so i just gave up on a single PC setup and went with Dual PC setup and never looked back

      I don't generally do RAM reviews on their own but I like the Fury ram and it runs well. I upgraded to 64GB from 32 because I needed it for video editing and such but I think that's a testament to the fact I like it enough to buy more 🤣

    I stream from one PC using Streamlabs with RTX 3080 and it is alright but sometimes depending on the game I might have to turn off the Vtuber avatar because it starts getting very low frame rate.

      Yea, I ended up buying a USB -pc1-pc2 hub so I can split the connection. All in all I’m not sure how my setup will work yet as I have to go pickup the other monitors from friends company. My 2 other monitors I want to use for streaming “aside from primary gaming one” are free and they only have 1 HDMI output, they are these business class Samsung ones. Guess I’ll have to see. I’ll just need to change input on primary monitor to log into stream pc “enter credentials”

      This is wrong, I have 13900k and 4090 and still find myself frustrated by some recordings I make. I record and play at max settings and 1440p and it hurts to say this but no single pc setup will get you butter smooth recordings if you’re playing on ultra and on resolutions higher then 2k.
