I'm glad you did this - I got the sales email from ammo and nearly bought it on impulse but I think it looks like it's possibly only of use for an abandoned tank project (or similar) and even then, the lack of control bugs me. Maybe the range and quality will mature over the coming years but for now the combo of no control and having to buy all of it makes me cautious. Thanks for your ever-honest attitude and brilliantly concise approach to these things. 11/10

Well everyone I just got this set myself!
It worked wonderful for me. I got the same results as the ammo video gave.
The key is make sure that you mix them up very very well before use!

I’m a really big fan of AMMO, and this product looks promising… although a bit on the pricey side… I’ll wait to see more people try them before pulling the trigger haha… excellent video and review, as always!

Hi Benjamin, yes, Death Guard was the first that came to mind when I saw the yellow rust on those drums!
Really loved how this project looked at Ammo's YT.
It would be very interesting to see a response from Ammo on why the results you got and what they show, differs so much.

@@TheRaceForTerra i'll be waiting for it. I saw a similar product at Moson 2019 but the texture was too coarse for 1/35 so now it's very interesting tp learn how useful are Scenics & Ammo offers to choose one

I followed the instructions very carefully, which says paint on the products, I noticed you stippled the product on and guess what, I got the same results as the box pictures when painted on and the same results as you when stippled, just a point but worth mentioning because it increases the number of effects you can get with this set! I will definitely use in future.

I do believe the method of application is the main factor, but I don’t believe stippling vs. painting was it - I have a second video detailing how I used U-Rust on a Crashed AT-ST, with exactly the effect I wanted. "the first tutorial is wrongly featuring Deep Oxide A.MIG-2251 when in fact it utilizes Oxide Grime A.MIG-2256; but this typo has been corrected in the newly printed booklets"
So your drum 4 (the good one) is the one that actually uses the products shown in the tutorial.

I have watched your new AWESOME video where you were able to get better results using these various products. However, this comment is about using the product as specified in the product guide. Therefore I am revising my previous review below. I now agree with you that in fact only one of the products (Oxide Grime) actually works as intended. That must have been the only one of the different products that I tried previously. While experimenting with the other ones today I achieved the same disappointing results like you did. Thanks again for this and the newer fantastic review.

Modern Option makes also various rust effect paint sets. They work quite well and aren't that expensive considering the bottle size.

I appreciate the review but had a completely different results. I just received the product and it worked great for me. In fact too great and the barrels looked like they were going to collapse into one big rust heap. However, after several black and brown washes they now look perfect. As another poster mentioned shaking the bottle isn't sufficient. It really needs to be stirred to mix in all of the sediment.

Very curious what you would think of Dirty Down Rust, skip all the steps with random but more predictable results
I will eventually give it a try - lots of people on my Discord have told me about it. However, ever since I published this AMMO U-Rust review I have found a series of steps not featured in the AMMO instructions which have helped me get awesome results...check out my Heavy Chipping video for some evidence of this.
Going to try to make my own since I have access to iron oxide powder and copper sulfate solutions. If you are interested these are very simple redox reactions. Individually these reagents are very cheap.

A big big thank you! Besides this what would you recommend? I use a mix of enamels with pigments. Is ok! But what's your position?
Ps: I prefer to do the chipping by hand and brush, much more control and I feel comfortable with it. A lot of time but is incredibly good results in my honest opinion.
Hey Nuno, you mean in terms of rust? Like you, enamels and oils are my mainstays. For rust streaks, the Oilbrushers are my favorite. As for chipping, I prefer liquid mask or chipping fluid, plus using sharp tools to scratch stuff up physically. Thanks for watching and for your feedback, as always!
Great review. Interesting product. So far, the appearance of the rust doesn't convince me, especially the light tones. I think there is not a full control over the end result either. Cheers.

Would you advise using this on warhammer 40k death guard? Almost every paint scheme I see really exacerbates the cartoonish nature of the models where as I'd like to really get a realistic corroded, rotting look to my models.
Yes, I think it's actually the main use-case, unbeknownst to Ammo! If you're doing say a 2000 pts. DG army, then this would make a lot of sense IMO.
You can mix the activators on your palate and put them on together.
Sure, but I do hope you mean “palette” - I would recommend avoiding mixing these on your palate at all costs!
Any idea how durable these MIG rusts effects are? How they hold up varnishing? I tried Dirty Down. The results are great, but durability is an issue when it comes to playing pieces. And you can't varnish the stuff as it eats away the effect or very drastically changes the effect.
Hei Ville! Durability is not an issue. I would like to say also that I have since found a "secret recipe" of my own which has allowed me to get exactly the results I want. You can check out my last video, "Heavy Chipping" to see what I mean...or also the Contemptor Dreadnought I just finished!
Have you tried (or considered) applying the paste in a thicker layer, particularly with those that failed to impress? The pictures in the guide look like they have a more generous application, which might change the end result.
I thought it was too thick already, to be honest. However, I wouldn't rule anything out at this stage.
@@TheRaceForTerra does it contract at all as it dries, or is it like a texture paste that simply solidifies? Either way I would say it's worth a go. =]

How hard wearing is the finish? Can it be varnished without losing the finish on the ones that look good?

What type of thinner can you use on these? As every time I buy one it is almost dried out completely.
Hi CGB, what do you mean by thinner? Except for the verdigris, which to my mind shouldn't be included in this pack, all the other products aren't paints at all, so they cannot be "thinned". Have you watched my Downed AT-ST video to see how to actually get them to work properly? I would recommend that first - let me know if you have any questions after that.
The problem I’m having is mine seem to have dried out since I purchased them. Is there some type of liquid I can add to them to bring them back to their original state. Some have never been opened until now.
Hey Craig, what exactly has dried? The paste with the iron particles, or the activator? The former needs to be stirred (not shaken).
good morning. the activators are it’s the bigger bottles one is still OK. The rest have turned into a solid lump with no viscosity.
@@CraigBower-zq2kz Hi Craig, sorry to hear that. I have 2 different U-Rust sets and haven't had this issue with either, despite very high summer temperatures in my hobby den, which is in the attic. I would contact AMMO of MIG if I were you - sorry!
What about the copper
The verdigris is the only thing in the set which is just a paint - there is no chemical reaction whatsoever. Therefore, not interesting for me!

Hey Mr. Wharris, I gave it one more chance, and with a lot of experimentation and several steps not covered in the instructions or any videos, I did get very good results. Check out my abandoned AT-ST video!
I've been using dirty downs rust for about 15 years, much less mucking around
Beautiful and illustrative review, but they didn't really get along with this product (not at all with a demonstration of rusting of the fuselage, really? Do you know what aircraft were made of?). This whole thing seems to me like going to a mosquito with a shotgun. I will kill him, but with really undesirable consequences. I can imagine such effects of rust and patina on metals that have been exposed to extreme conditions, e.g. some neglected old chemical factories or old seaside ports. So the use is really very narrow in my opinion. I don't want to be an evil prophet, but this product, as it came out, will be forgotten. BTW if someone really leans over and finds the courage (just the price) to buy this product, first they will have to decide where to use it first and second, to learn !! to work with it to use it in a wider range.
