that's so awesome you guys intentionally say goodbye/thanks to your staff! This was really helpful in seeing what working in a hospital is like. Thanks.
Dietitian here! I’m stepping back into the clinical setting after working in community nutrition for some time. Hope I’m able to adjust fairly quickly !
You’re the best when you intentionally go to thank the workers!!! So genuine!! ❤️❤️❤️ I admire your gratitude. People forget that team work is everything!!
Thank you so much for this video. I am working on my master's and start my internship this August. I am super grateful but also super nervous. It was great to see what a normal day is like for you!
Very informative! I had my share of internships during my bachelor and I really miss it. Completed my masters in clinical nutrition exactly 1 year ago (which has no internship periods here in Denmark its basically pure biochemistry and medical lectures for 1.5 years and 6 months for thesis). Unfortunately Ive been without a job ever since graduation. There seems to be no jobs for the newly educated, hospitals and even community centers all want minumum 3 years experience, even for students who completed the masters degree. I graduated with a high average so its fair to say Im extremely disappointed that its so hard to transition from uni into the actual job market, but Im keeping my hopes up and still looking. Ive been doing free counseling on the side for 6 months now, just to not lose track of the essentials.
hi! im sorry you weren't able to find work :( i highly recommend marketing yourself as a diet consultant and having people pay you for counseling ! a lot of people see nutritionist that dont even go to college and they make a lot of money with personal clients, this could be a great chance for you to start your own business! look into health coaching and private practices!
Thank you for sharing what you do! I’m currently an M.A. working for a weight loss clinic but I’ve been contemplating if I want to go back to school for Nursing but Dietician sounds like the better deal 😌
Dietitian here working with onco patients mostly, work set up here is different from what you do. I don't have so much independence to choose my patients which is a bummer ,it's all referrals from MD 😇 but I am just so encouraged by watching your channel. Thank you and keep posting.
I'm glad you found some encouragement from this channel! Oncology is such an important specialty in dietetics. Hopefully dietitians will continue pushing and receiving greater autonomy in the healthcare field.
Thank you so much for this video!! I just started community college last September going for an AS in Nutrition and Dietetics. I’ve been thinking about completing my master’s and becoming a RD and it all sounds soooo scary! I hope I can do it
You totally can! It is a challenging and competitive path but 100% worth it if it's your passion. Becoming an RD grew me in ways I'd never have imagined. If you haven't already, check out All Access Dietetics for resources and support! Best of luck! 😃
@@nocturnalmedusa I think whether it is worth it is ultimately dependent on you and what you value in life. As some people say, if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life. That being said, [prospective] dietetics students should weigh the costs associated with becoming an RD. Completing a graduate degree and dietetic internship is a significant financial commitment-I don't have a masters but personally spent roughly 45K between undergrad and dietetic internship/associated costs (and this is with living at home during college, attending junior college first, etc.). Tack grad school and other items on and you’re looking at around 75K (more than many RDs make in a year). Pay can vary based on state, setting, experience and certifications, etc, but it is unfortunately true that we generally aren’t compensated fairly for our expertise or as much as other roughly comparable positions such as SLP and OT. In my experience, inpatient clinical tends to pay lowest (~40-65K/yr) and work you the hardest, whereas managerial positions tend to pay highest (~75-100K/yr). I’m still a new RD and inpatient clinical is the love of my life so I settle for lower pay. 😉 As far as burnout goes, I don’t think it is as high in dietetics as in other disciplines such as nursing and medicine. We have pretty good work-life balance overall. However, it’s still healthcare and healthcare is messy and ugly sometimes. There are challenges associated with being an RD that can cause frustration and burnout-e.g. perceptions and stigmas, systemic fatphobia, distrust and marginalization by some MDs, poor pay, devaluation of expertise by self-proclaimed experts, performance culture within the profession, etc. All of those things being said…dietetics is still an AMAZING field and I wouldn’t trade my training and expertise for anything. It’s incredibly humbling and special to advocate for people to be adequately nourished, whether that means helping someone find resources during food insecurity or infusing parenteral nutrition in a patient with half their small intestine resected. So yes-I personally do think it’s worth it, even if not financially. Hope that helps! 😊
Can you make more such videos, and also include the information on the diet according to the disease and biochemical parameter, it will help so many of us(Aspiring RD's)
If you would have shown me this video when I was in undergrad, I would have been so overwhelmed, but after seeing many many patients through the internship and the first few months of employment, it gets easier and faster. :) ----- When COVID was surging, we saw on average 30-40 patients per day (15-20 patients per RD) ...and now that COVID has slowed down so much we're seeing an average of about 12-14 patients per day (6-7 patients per RD)
Do you have any go-to phrases that you’ll use for your recommendations? If so how do you typically word them lol. I need to revamp my notes and I always love learning and see what other RDs say. Also, what has been your hospital’s protocol for patients that are on 100% BiPAP. How are you feeding them? Do you resort to TPN since they are unable to take a break from the BiPAP? Bc you can’t break the seal with the BiPAP for a OGT or NGT.
For refeeding syndrome, ill write "Pt at risk for refeeding syndrome. Rec to monitor lytes (K+, mg, phos) and replete PRN. If lytes begin to drop, rec to add IV thiamine (100 mg/day) x7-10 days to help stabalize." ----- For bowel care, Ill just write "Rec to continue bowel regimen" or "rec to start pt on bowel regimen" or if they are having liquid stools but are still getting a scheduled bowel regimen, Ill write "Rec to move bowel regimen from scheduled to PRN" ...As far as the feedings while pt's are on BiPAP, we have had tremendous success alongside our speech team and interventional radiology. So when pt's are placed on BiPAP, IR will place a small-bore NGT, which doesnt break the seal once in place. Of course the pt would need to be able to maintain saturations for a few seconds while they break the seal to place the small bore NGT. Ideally, we'd identify these pts before they're escalated to BiPAP...so we'll have the small bored NGT placed prior to needing the BiPAP. -- I hope that was helpful!
Thank you for this video... I am trying to determine Dietitian vs Speech Pathology Assistant vs OTA. On the labor of statistics it says Dietitian is 8% growth while the other 2 have more than 20% growth. Was it difficult finding work once you completed school...
Hi there! I’m glad you found this video helpful! I had no issue finding a job once I passed my exam. I think any of those career pathways will set you up very nicely. Just depends on which angle you want to approach clinical care. I like dietetics because we get to be involved in so many different aspects of the pt’s care, because most everything has some sort of impact on nutrition status or vice versa, but truly think any of those specialties would provide an awesome career for you! 😊
Same here considering RD vs ASLP SLPs earn a bit more with just Bachelor's+ internship than RDs after Master's+ internship (atleast in India) but I don't know what to do because parents are not really supportive 😣
Thanks for the nice video. I am a Japanese dietitian. I was interested in the work of dietitians outside of my country and was able to watch a valuable video. My question is, are there more women dietitians? In Japan, there are many female dietitians. I am a man.
Thanku you for this video, Hi I from India i also like to be a dietitian i had completed my degree, Can you please say how to become a dietitian. I would like to take master degree in clinical dietitian.
Hay, where r u from? Um from Bangladesh and um also working as a clinical Dietitian at a private hospital here. And now I would like to do RD exam in usa or Canada or UK.
Its difficult to gauge because I believe pay is heavily influenced by where you live. I live and work in California, which typically pays higher rates to accommodate the higher cost of living. I am salaried making 60,000/year (this is the entry level salary).
