A Day in the Life of a Clinical Dietitian - “RD Day” 2021
มุมมอง 59K3 ปีที่แล้ว
For my first “RD Day”, I wanted to dedicate this video to answering a question I’m often asked ➡️➡️ “what does a dietitian do in a hospital setting” and “why would a dietitian need to see a COVID patient?”….so I created this “day in the life” of a clinical dietitian to provide a little personal insight into what my day to day has been looking like. 👨⚕️🍎🏥 (doggo included😜) . . So what is a diet...

Sir I want to loose weight
Technology is amazing! I am an RD myself and this was very insightful. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thanks for your video. I just have a question, what is the qualifications the one should have to work as a clinical dietitian, what degrees
Hello Jaime, I'm a Dietetics student and want to become a RD, please guide me some study tips and books for exam preparation.
Retinopathy does not necessarily lead to blindless, at all. Please choose your words carefully and do further research before posting.
There is actually plenty of research to indicate that it does. I also did not say it was guaranteed that a dx of retinopathy would lead to blindness. I stated simple facts that can be substantiated by opening up a journal or medical textbook. Please kindly educate yourself before placing comments on my videos. Thank you! Thanks for the nice video. I am a Japanese dietitian. I was interested in the work of dietitians outside of my country and was able to watch a valuable video. My question is, are there more women dietitians? In Japan, there are many female dietitians. I am a man.
Thank you for sharing what you do! I’m currently an M.A. working for a weight loss clinic but I’ve been contemplating if I want to go back to school for Nursing but Dietician sounds like the better deal 😌
Very informative.... much love from Ghana🇬🇭🇬🇭❤️
This was very helpful thank you
Very informative! I had my share of internships during my bachelor and I really miss it. Completed my masters in clinical nutrition exactly 1 year ago (which has no internship periods here in Denmark its basically pure biochemistry and medical lectures for 1.5 years and 6 months for thesis). Unfortunately Ive been without a job ever since graduation. There seems to be no jobs for the newly educated, hospitals and even community centers all want minumum 3 years experience, even for students who completed the masters degree. I graduated with a high average so its fair to say Im extremely disappointed that its so hard to transition from uni into the actual job market, but Im keeping my hopes up and still looking. Ive been doing free counseling on the side for 6 months now, just to not lose track of the essentials.
hi! im sorry you weren't able to find work :( i highly recommend marketing yourself as a diet consultant and having people pay you for counseling ! a lot of people see nutritionist that dont even go to college and they make a lot of money with personal clients, this could be a great chance for you to start your own business! look into health coaching and private practices!
Am a first year in nutrition and dietetics studying in Kenya. Thank you for your video
May I know if clinical dietitian has night shift you need to follow?
Thank you so much for this video!! I just started community college last September going for an AS in Nutrition and Dietetics. I’ve been thinking about completing my master’s and becoming a RD and it all sounds soooo scary! I hope I can do it
You totally can! It is a challenging and competitive path but 100% worth it if it's your passion. Becoming an RD grew me in ways I'd never have imagined. If you haven't already, check out All Access Dietetics for resources and support! Best of luck! 😃
@@annier844 Some people say that the pay isn’t worth it. Do you think this is true? Is there a lot of burnout?
@@nocturnalmedusa I think whether it is worth it is ultimately dependent on you and what you value in life. As some people say, if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life. That being said, [prospective] dietetics students should weigh the costs associated with becoming an RD. Completing a graduate degree and dietetic internship is a significant financial commitment-I don't have a masters but personally spent roughly 45K between undergrad and dietetic internship/associated costs (and this is with living at home during college, attending junior college first, etc.). Tack grad school and other items on and you’re looking at around 75K (more than many RDs make in a year). Pay can vary based on state, setting, experience and certifications, etc, but it is unfortunately true that we generally aren’t compensated fairly for our expertise or as much as other roughly comparable positions such as SLP and OT. In my experience, inpatient clinical tends to pay lowest (~40-65K/yr) and work you the hardest, whereas managerial positions tend to pay highest (~75-100K/yr). I’m still a new RD and inpatient clinical is the love of my life so I settle for lower pay. 😉 As far as burnout goes, I don’t think it is as high in dietetics as in other disciplines such as nursing and medicine. We have pretty good work-life balance overall. However, it’s still healthcare and healthcare is messy and ugly sometimes. There are challenges associated with being an RD that can cause frustration and burnout-e.g. perceptions and stigmas, systemic fatphobia, distrust and marginalization by some MDs, poor pay, devaluation of expertise by self-proclaimed experts, performance culture within the profession, etc. All of those things being said…dietetics is still an AMAZING field and I wouldn’t trade my training and expertise for anything. It’s incredibly humbling and special to advocate for people to be adequately nourished, whether that means helping someone find resources during food insecurity or infusing parenteral nutrition in a patient with half their small intestine resected. So yes-I personally do think it’s worth it, even if not financially. Hope that helps! 😊
Is it possible to be a Dietitian if you have nursing degree??

Does phosphorus have something to do with refeeding?
That is one of the most important minerals in the blood that is going to be afftected first when someone has refeeding syndrome.

What did you decide I’m leaning towards community nutrition but haven’t seen many videos of them
Hi 👋 that's interesting 😁😍 I'm a nutrition student in Iran . I hope to be like you 🥺❤️ good luck
You’re awesome and inspirational!
I am studying to be an RD and like your videos. I’m a vegan so I appreciated how you specifically talked about vegans and their needs. I worry about getting enough Ca intake myself so I drink Ca fortified oat milk and also Ca fortified OJ. I also started to eat natto, not to get Ca, but because as a vegan there are few to no sources of Vitamin K2 and I was concerned about Ca building up in my soft tissues instead of being put into my bones/teeth. I read K2 is important for that process. Natto is a very good source of K2 so that is why I now eat it daily. In any case, glad to see your videos. I am struggling just with the chemistry classes so you are far past that and onto your career. Very impressive!
Is this similar to registered dietitian? is this job hard or easy? Is this team work related or work by yourself?
Thanku you for this video, Hi I from India i also like to be a dietitian i had completed my degree, Can you please say how to become a dietitian. I would like to take master degree in clinical dietitian.
Does nutritionalists or dietatics use stethoscope?
We can when we use it to measure blood pressure 😊
@@matthewjaimerd7349 just for blood pressure nutritionalist can not use it to diagnose respiratory issue or cough ?plz also tell me is there white coat ceremony at first day of university?plz reply me asap
@@namrafiaz7531 I mean, we are trained to understand many health conditions, but officially, a dietitian cannot diagnose a respiratory disease, even if we know the patient had a respiratory condition. But as a dietitian, you will understand the pathophysiology of all the diseases you work. Many of which, include respiratory issues (like COVID)
Thanks for the video Hi form a Spanish dietitian!
Where do u live?
I am aspiring to be a dietician 😬
Nice video! Dietitian here also in California 😊
Awesome, thank you for this video
Awesome, thank you for this video
Do you have any go-to phrases that you’ll use for your recommendations? If so how do you typically word them lol. I need to revamp my notes and I always love learning and see what other RDs say. Also, what has been your hospital’s protocol for patients that are on 100% BiPAP. How are you feeding them? Do you resort to TPN since they are unable to take a break from the BiPAP? Bc you can’t break the seal with the BiPAP for a OGT or NGT.
For refeeding syndrome, ill write "Pt at risk for refeeding syndrome. Rec to monitor lytes (K+, mg, phos) and replete PRN. If lytes begin to drop, rec to add IV thiamine (100 mg/day) x7-10 days to help stabalize." ----- For bowel care, Ill just write "Rec to continue bowel regimen" or "rec to start pt on bowel regimen" or if they are having liquid stools but are still getting a scheduled bowel regimen, Ill write "Rec to move bowel regimen from scheduled to PRN" ...As far as the feedings while pt's are on BiPAP, we have had tremendous success alongside our speech team and interventional radiology. So when pt's are placed on BiPAP, IR will place a small-bore NGT, which doesnt break the seal once in place. Of course the pt would need to be able to maintain saturations for a few seconds while they break the seal to place the small bore NGT. Ideally, we'd identify these pts before they're escalated to BiPAP...so we'll have the small bored NGT placed prior to needing the BiPAP. -- I hope that was helpful!
