      At the core of this movie is the relationship between Beau and his mother. It’s the kind of relationship that a mother put her son in her own properties, paid actors to play the crazy neighbours and experimented on her son daily with the drugs she made through a psychiatrist she paid. So when you said everything is on another reality, it’s kinda right and wrong. Beau’s mind is kinda messed up from all the drugs she forced him to take. And the fake reality his mother created for him to live? No wonder he doesn’t know what is real or not.
      I also love the ending. This is the right ending for Beau, whose plea for help was totally being ignored with silent, nobody seems to care, everyone sees him as an object and worse still - judging. Him, alone on the sinking boat, knowing that at anytime he would die, helpless, then when it did, we the audience stare in shock, wondering why. The exact same question we should ask in today society. There are people who need and ask for help, but instead we judge them, then just watch them drowning and died.

    I'm really intrigued by this movie just by the discussion. If a person was being manipulated from the time of birth would they ever have a conclusive moment of realization, or would they forever be blanketed in doubt??

  • @capragamer
    @capragamer ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Yes, one can argue that Mona could see Beau’s effort and desire to get to her. However, a key thing with manipulators is that EFFORT isn’t enough… they can only feel a semblance of the love they desire in a specific way. Any delineation from this is viewed as a personal slight and expounded and twisted to mean nefarious intent. Although Beau is Afraid has some flaws, I feel like the film captures this dynamic masterfully.

    I love that Nathan Lane said it’s Everything Everywhere all at Once for Jews 😂. I totally understand that and after I saw it I thought, this film could have been called Jewish guilt the movie.
    I personally am fascinated by this film. I also would love to rewatch it now knowing the outcome. I know this film isn’t for everyone and might not be for most people, however there is in my opinion so many instances of a creative genius seen throughout. Love A24 for letting him do this regardless if it’s not a fan favorite.

  • @modesttriangle1022
    @modesttriangle1022 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The film was very well made technically speaking. Direction, cinematography, lighting, costumes, everything. However, I feel like there wasn’t a clear explanation as to what Beau’s mom actually wanted to do to Beau. Did she want to kill him? Keep him hospitalized? It was a bit vague. I get the message of the movie was partly about how men’s mental health can become damaged by maternal manipulation/abuse and a lack of a father figure. But yeah his mom’s motivation was never really revealed, unless I missed something.

    • @pegacorn13
      @pegacorn13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you and that's partly why I didn't like it as much as his previous films. This was strictly Beau's perspective and he clearly didn't reach any sort of catharsis at the end. His mother just seemed to be "evil" to me and for a film that's intended to be so thought provoking and deep, the lack of insight into her motivations made me really struggle with it. But then again, perhaps that is the intention.

    I really enjoyed the film and Ari's ongoing exploration of generational trauma resulting in anxiety, distortion, avoidance, inability to bond and trust others, constant confusion of reality and catastrophizing. Its truly the horror of family in so many ways.

  • @carlosluce5822
    @carlosluce5822 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I feel like a lot of people are missing the main points that are going over their head because of all the craziness going on around. beau states the last time he’s seen his mom was about 5+ months ago which is stating he’s been in his moms grasp his whole life and he finally wanted to try to live a life on his own which he doesn’t realize at the time he really isn’t because his mom owns his building so he’s still always been under her watch and all the people out front of his building are all payed off by her to make him still live in fear of reality, like this is the way the world is to still keep him in that fear and make him go back to her. Then when he gets taken in by grace and roger you can tell on a phone call with a “contractor” is really her on the phone with his mom cause you can hear her say “I’m a mother to you know” showing empathy for beau and realizing he’s being forced to play in this nightmare he doesn’t deserve and she was at a point to telling him before roger came and told her to help with the bbq then she gave him the remote to help him realize he’s all in a staged act, I feel like Tony dying wasn’t supposed to happen and that broke her and made her turn against beau for loosing another child, I feel like everything after that point where he runs into the woods is when we really leave reality and it’s all a dreamlike sequence and he’s just wondering around the woods thinking of his life and how it could be different which is what the play represents but didn’t really happen it was all in his head, possibly the final act of him getting home was a back to reality sequence and he probably does kill his mom and then ends up killing himself out of grief and drowning in the sea which is representing him drowning in his grief and anxiety and fear of life and the boat cap sizing is really his mind cap sizing and he cap sizes with it in the water and the whole trial was happening in his head before his life ended in the sea drowning, also we see a lot of shots of being surrounded by water, shots of the camera being submerged under the water which is all foreshadowing his fate of drowning in his grief and sorrows and hinting at how things really ended by him dying out in the water

    Also the attic scene represents the version of himself being brave and having control over himself but that version of himself was locked in that attic and was stuck there. it’s been confirmed he had no brother and that’s just a memory of himself when he was younger, and the penis is a representation of his fear of using his own and the fear of sex and in terms makes him look at having a penis a monster and something he should fear or it can represent the fact that in fact his father was literally nothing but a penis used to give birth to him and nothing else.

    Beau is Afraid... ...I have an extreme love and hate relationship with this movie.
    On the positive side, I love Joaquin Phoenix's performance as Beau and he gives it his all. The cinematography by Pawel Porogozelski is once again fantastic in the way he frames certain shots are framed and lit, a 20 minute animated sequence that's well done. The themes of having anxiety and being scared are definitely there and I appreciate the effort of doing that as someone who has anxiety issues on a daily basis. The score by Bobby Krilic is fantastic as well and the rest of the cast such as Patti Lupone, Parker Posey and Stephen McKinley Henderson are fantastic. And when it does have its suspenseful moments, it's great. And I appreciate the fact the film wanted to challenge you as a viewer.
    That being said, this is one damn conflicting movie because there's things that definitely holds this back from me even giving it a grade. Starting obviously with the film's running time which, this is a movie that easily could've been 2 hours and 10 minutes or so, you could've taken 20 minutes out and you feel the length with the animated sequence which while it's admirable, kinda overstays it's welcome. Also, while I appreciate the fact that studios (independent or well known) are willing to let filmmakers being able to have creative control (whether it's an original film or in a franchise or an IP) ajf that's perfectly fine, I champion directors getting creative control because not everything needs to be mandated or told what they can or can't do, however, there are moments where creative control doesn't always work and it can become very self indulgent. This is one of those cases where I respect a filmmaker's ambitions, but it gets way too caught up in the self indulgent territory with decisions made and someone really needed to tell Aster when is enough enough. Because there's some weird unnecessary decisions made here. Also I felt there could've been more layers to Beau as a character, he's fleshed out a little bit but there could've more and they go way too far with one visual of his.
    Also I hated the way this movie ended as this is the third time that Aster has done the same downbeat ending.
    But my biggest negative is the way people have acted towards those who didn't enjoy it or those who do enjoy it. Neither side is wrong, but there's a reason why some people aren't gonna enjoy this and it's perfectly understandable. But the amount of animosity thrown at people for this movie especially Cody Leach, it's not fucking funny and you guys are insufferable on both sides, as well as with recently Killers of the Flower Moon (which I will see) to where if people dont see this said movie, we're killing cinema by not seeing every original movie ever made along with IPs every time. No, we're not, that excuse is obnoxious. It's just not everything is gonna be for film lovers, no matter what genre.
    At the end of the day, Beau is Afraid has some really strong highs and some very low lows and I appreciate the fact that Aster had a lot of ambition and put it to use and I appreciate the fact A24 tried to do something out there. However, this is one of those times where I walk away kinda letdown because for everything good I enjoyed, there's things that frustrates me. In conclusion, this is a movie I respect more than I enjoy. That I don't love nor hate. I'm just complicated on it.

    I think Ari Aster is the master of capturing trauma in film. That being said, Beau is Afraid is most likely a work of genius for some who relate to it. For me, it just didn't draw the emotional reaction from me that I think it did for many viewers. Essentially, this is a very male centric film and it failed to hit me as a woman. There's nothing wrong with that but I feel that Midsommar and Hereditary managed to capture a broader audience. Or perhaps it's just me and those films resonated with me so hard that I HAD TO go back and rewatch them both numerous times. Beau is Afraid is amazingly well done. It's gorgeous and creative and funny and anxiety provoking but.....I just don't feel the need to revisit it. In the end, I think that Ari Aster made the film that he wanted to make and for that, I am overjoyed for him. Now that this is out of the way though, I want a return to his mastery of horror with the humor sprinkled in just enough to make something unique and special. I don't want animation, I don't want anymore Charlie Kaufman types of films, I don't want happy endings: I just want Ari doing what Ari does best.
