There is no one making films like Ari Aster, he is truly one of the most incredible voices in cinema right now

Very true but I always look at movies like John Carpenters The Thing being a absolute box office bomb upon theatrical release but now is considered one of the best sci fi & horror movies ever made to a lot of film fans. Basically my point is I think in time people will inevitably go back to Beau Is Afraid singing it’s praises because Ari is most definitely one of those one in a million directors we get once in a generation

I enjoyed this film. First act was brilliant. I Def think in 3 or 4 years people will be loving this movie. It's like nothing I've ever seen before very unpredictable. Joaquin was just amazing man without him this film would be lesser
Also the metal institution theory is golden

Grace was driving the truck that hit Beau and it looked like a kind of box truck. It made me assume her and Roger prowled Beau’s neighborhood to kidnap new “sons”. Then you see Roger works for Beau’s mom and that her company sponsored the projects Beau lives in. So maybe they’re case workers that kidnap wasserman customers?! Would make sense that their home is a mental institution in a way. Maybe that’s why Grace felt bad for Beau?? idk great movie glad u guys did a video

I don’t think any of the events that happen in the movie can be viewed as things that actually happen because Beau is such an unreliable narrator and since this movies told from just his pov reality is kinda tainted by his severe anxiety and the medication he’s taking.
I think Beau’s mom being involved in literally every aspect of his life even down to the microwaveable food he eats and like you said this couple that he meets is just a manifestation of his fear of how controlling his mother is and not actually real because that’s just way too convenient and unrealistic.

    • @jistikoff2361

this is also a metaphor, of how castrated sons feel that their mother is in control (in a destructive way) of their whole lives

I didn’t like the movie after first watch but it’s been growing on me ever since. After a second viewing I saw the vision a lot clearly and it is just continuing to grow on me. Ari Asters got the juice and he cooked up a banger here that has potential to become a cult classic in the future.

I love that we are in an agebof filmmakers who one.....are bored of current cinema, two....they are obsessed with movies......three......they know EXACTLY how to make a movie that feels simultaneously like a new movie and a movie that's already a classic.

@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ the guy says that he hid his head as a baby, this is what his mother was screaming in the beginning, which probably comes from her over-possessivness and paranoia and you don't become the head of a corporate empire if you are not narcissistic sociopath, which is why his dad was dehumanized

Just got done watching it. Absolutely loved it, and sadly connected with it. It was a masterpiece of challenges of truth. People who didn’t like it, don’t think comprehensively and probably don’t want to look within themselves… too bad. As always, Phoenix nailed the acting.

I can’t go three hours without urinating and I wanted to see the whole thing, so I finally got to watch it this morning because you can purchase it on streaming services and I thought it was incredible. The first hour might be my favorite, the colorful circus of insane homeless people, the maintenance guy saying “you’re fucked”, the reflection of the suicide jumper in the glass panel, where he buys the Virgin Mary statue… Perfect. I feel like a lot of events in the film are actually happening, but the homeless people are totally exaggerated, the same bearded guy gouging the eyes out of the other guy, he sees from his window, end up in his apartment, in the same exact fight. I’m pretty sure the dude, bleeding heavily from his eye sockets, did not walk all the way up to his apartment. Unless these are all actors being paid by his mother to do a specific task.

@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ I really don’t think there is any one correct interpretation of this movie. It’s also possible that Beau is just so driven by fear that he is imagining these hyper realistic character stereotypes of scary, homeless people. Like, if you could see the street in front of his apartment through a normal persons eyes, it would look very very different. Sure, some homeless people, maybe one crazy person fighting another crazy person, but we all know that even the worst of the worst of inner-city bad behavior is like 1/10 as bad as what is going on on his street. The last thing I want is to get political, but hear me out: this is the way that affluent white conservatives view inner cities thanks to conservative media. Again, I don’t want to get political! But I’ve seen this pointed out by multiple reviewers and critics, and I think it’s valid. There are people in this country who really believe that inner cities are like this. And they aren’t completely wrong! Just look at Portland or San Francisco. However, in those slums it’s basically zombies on fentanyl. Hunched over barely standing up. Pretty much in capable of just randomly chasing after people. They can’t put 1 foot in front of the other. You could blow a feather onto their shoulder and they would fall over. Every single weird behavior he sees down on the street is repeated when he is looking up into his apartment, the weird dancing guy, the guy screaming “get away from me”. These people don’t seem real, they seem like NPC’s from a video game, programmed for certain actions and a modder just relocated them to a new area where they continue the same behavior. I don’t know if you are a gamer or not but it’s like capturing one of the night folk in RDR2 and dragging them into a bar in St Dennis. Same behavior, utter chaos. It’s either being exaggerated in his own head, or it’s Truman show level manipulation by his mother. And I don’t think there is a correct answer. That’s what makes this movie. Great! That’s why people who watch this movie think about it for weeks and weeks! I don’t need everything spelled out for me, and wrapped up in a tight little bow (haha, Beau). It’s like debating whether or not Deckard was actually a replicant. You’re missing the point. Ambiguity is the point. But that’s an entirely different discussion with all of the different releases of blade runner. Which we have no time for here, my friend. Just a decent parallel I thought I could bring into the conversation.

This movie felt like it was trying a little too hard. Maybe giving a writer director a blank check with no oversight is not always the best move.

The family he stays with are bought and paid for by his mother (as are pretty much everybody else in the movie, they're addicted to her drugs from her drug company) everything and everyone is set up to test/trap him. Even the daughter says "You've already failed the test".
Probably the best film I've ever seen.... Shrooms reveal all things clearly!
