Hi Cathy, using a cording or piping foot to insert a zipper is surprisingly easy and gives a nice finished edge. The foot channel guides the zipper to make perfect stitching a snap. I had a thought while watching this (5 years later since it was posted). I could add a layer of PUL as lining, so it could be an easy to make wet bag, for cloth diapers, cloth feminine pads, wipes, bathing suits (larger size bag), etc.

Gail Yellen Thanks for the tip! I got a couple of rolls of endless zipper tape burning up in my stash! Today I serged and covered a lot of knits and thank goodness for your suggestion of using stabilizing tape! No more nasty rolls! It feltlike you were there coaching me along! ❤️
I've had a serger for 27 years, but have never seen a zipper sewn like this. I'm new to quilting so these bags would be a great use of my free motion practice pieces, too! So glad to have come across this today; YIPPEE 😁
Even though I definitely enjoy your videos and your presentation I have 2 comments. I don't know if it was the fact that you didn't press the zipper after each side because it definitely did not look like even placement. And I don't know if you have somebody holding the camera or if it's on a tripod but I want to suggest trying manual focus because the camera was struggling to stay in focus. You may find that your camera lens has a decent enough depth of field that you can manually set the focus on something close but it will still remain in focus when you are sewing. Just provides a better user experience. 😊

this works great on dress/standard zips but not very well on the larger or chunky resin type zips as the teeth are too big to fit in the piping groove. wish Brother/Babylock would make a foot that would work for bigger zips. Would be great for making jackets or larger projects

Hi Sandra, I’m on my way to Chicago right now and in the airport. The foot you need is a 5mm piping foot. Some brands also call it a cording foot. You can probably find a generic one that will fit your Elna if Elna doesn’t have one. Check with your local sewing machine dealer for guidance. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!

Hi Mary, that’s a great question. As of right now, I haven’t tried that application. But let me think about it and if I can develop a way to do a lapped zipper installation, I’ll do a Tip Clip. The wheels in my serger brain are turning and thanks for asking!
You can still install a zipper on your Lauren. I couldn't find any pics with a close-up of the standard foot on the Lauren. You can still stitch with the zipper teeth under the standard foot (positioned left of the needles). Stitch slowly because the zipper teeth don't have a channel to under the foot to guide them and you want the stitching to be as straight as possible. Pressing the zipper might also help flatten it out a bit more. Check your iron temp so that you don't melt the teeth. Thanks!

My Baby Lock Lauren can't use a cording foot. How can I apply a zipper. Baby Lock didn't have any videos for projects on this serger. Thanks.
