    Thank you for making this video. I am hoping to do my first steeking this year. It’s so fascinating.

    Hi Taylor. Thank you for a wonderful video. Did you record a video for cutting the arm steeks?
    I’m ordering this pattern because you did say that the pattern was well written and gave instructions for knitting the steeks.
    Enjoy your day...Susan

      The instructions for knitting the pattern are great. The instructions for adding the steek sts are clear within the pattern, and the number of sts to pick up for the arm holes was specific, making for a good start to the sleeve (no guessing)… because I knit with Jamieson & Smith, I did not reinforce my steek but instead, picked up all the armhole sts (a bit tedious!) and only THEN cut the steak open and steam blocked it flat. Have fun!

    Hi Taylor, and thanks a lot, your videos are always really useful, clear and fun =) I have a question: do you think it's possible to skip the reinforcement of the steek if you pick up the stitches before cutting? In this particular case I'm using alpaca yarn and it's quite slippery.

    • @TaylorOwen
      @TaylorOwen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Idk, personally I would reinforce alpaca!!!

    Dear Taylor, may I ask you what happens to the "sides" of the cut steek? Don't they bother you? Can they be "felt"? Do they roll so that they don't bug the person who wears the piece of work? Isn't there a bulge underneath?

    • @TaylorOwen
      @TaylorOwen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I steam block them flat. They don’t bother me and seem to felt in place. I notice a very small bulge but it isn’t extreme. I might use a bit of yarn to tack them in place it they start to bug me.

    Does this pattern give you these instructions on steeking armholes and neck openings? I have been knitting a Marie Wallin sweater in the round ( although the pattern is written flat). I’m up to the armholes and not sure what to do next and finding very little online on how to change from knitting a flat pattern to a round. I really appreciate your videos on this topic! I would buy the Shetland book if that would help!

    • @TaylorOwen
      @TaylorOwen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the instructions are written and I’ve found them easy to follow. I had the chance to meet Gudrun and I told her of how I had knit a Marie Wallin pattern that asked I knit colorwork flat and instead just broke my yarn at the end of every round to cheat the system. She told me people do this in Shetland, they call it something like “brek en strik” (I’m butchering the spelling I’m sure)!

      @@TaylorOwen thank you much, Taylor. I might have to buy the pattern to get this done! (Love your accent, by the way.)

    Hi Taylor,
    If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions: first of all, do you know how many yards are in a Jamieson & Smith Jumper Weight Cone? Secondly, what size needle do you use for it? Thirdly, the pricing is in pounds and, for the life of me, I don't see how to get it into dollars so I was wondering how you dealt with that issue. Thanks so much!

    • @TaylorOwen
      @TaylorOwen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Their 25g skeins have about 125yds… a cone is about 500g, so I estimate it has about 2,500 yds per cone. I used US 4 needles for the lace and US 3 needles for the colorwork on this pattern. Every time I shop their site, I Google in a new tab US dollars to British Pounds and utilize the currency converter. ❤️🧶❤️

    Taylor, while steeking, do we ALWAYS cast off the stiches under those cast on? I'm just making the Dathan sweater and there is nothing like casting any stiches off in the armpit area. So I guess it depends on the shape of the garment, or not? Another thing I wanted to ask is whether I always have to do the "color work"throughout all the nine stiches (in case of Dathan) or is only the very middle of the steeking important to make it look differently and make it easier to cut through the middle? I thought it would be enough to separate e.g. the middle 3 stiches by using another color, main color, another color in the middle. Is that right?

    • @TaylorOwen
      @TaylorOwen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I remember correctly, the Dathan is knit from the bottom up and asks you to cast on sts for the steek… I only cast off sts at the neck for this sweater because I was intentionally shaping a round hole for my head. If I were working a vneck maybe I wouldn’t have 🤔 … as for the colorwork I would simple maximize diversity of the colors worked on each side to better hold them in place. So for 2 colors, every other st w/ some symmetry to help determine center. ❤️🧶♥️

      @@TaylorOwen Taylor, I can see there is no shaping of the neck in this sweater. Do I understand you correctly: you made steeks to shape the neck?

    • @TaylorOwen
      @TaylorOwen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anetaturkiewicz5229 no, I knit the Vair pullover according to instructions. This taught me how to add a steek to the neck of my next sweater knit, the Gr8 gingham. ♥️
