  • The Stop and Start engine system can automatically shut off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, such as at a stop sign or traffic light when the brake pedal is depressed.

This system take me to my nostalgic memory of learning to drive a manual transmission. The car stalls each time when i used to take off from a stop.😂 thank you for adding this feature in the newer cars

Reputable and qualified mechanics will advise you to keep this feature off due to the added and mostly unnecessary wear and tear on the engine caused by frequent stops and starts of the the complex elements of today's internal combustion engines.

    • @Crunkboy415

I can little need for this in relatively flat regions, but cities like San Francisco, where there is a lot of stop and starting on hills, it's almost a necessity. Also the Bay Area has the worse commuter traffic in the nation, so these engines will help conserve gas in the long run.

How is there high mileage Prius/Camry taxis then? Toyota hybrid engines will turn off at a light or if you're driving slow enough in a parking if the battery pack doesn't need charging and will start back up if you accelerate hard enough... They've been around for a very long time now and it's not problematic for the engines. I'd love for you to explain the "complex elements of today's internal combustion engines"... What's complex about them? They have tighter tolerances, but they're similar to older engines minus variable valve timing.

The starter is getting many times it's "normal" use by this annoying system, it's only logical that it shortens starter life. I believe most mechanics agree, that engine starts, is where most engine wear comes from. Toyota needs to make the Default- system Off, so you can chose it if you wish, without being forced to turn it off, every time you start the car. Make it a menu choice.

Honestly I hate this feature but it doesn't hurt the car engine or the starter it just hurts us because of the annoying jerk feeling that it feels.
The only time engine wears out is in cold starts or long periods of no use .Once the engine is turned on from a cold start the oil lubricates the parts that need to be lubricated properly after a few seconds of turning it on. Therefore when it restarts on stop and go traffic or at a traffic light it won't wear out the engine.
Cars that have this feature have a heavy duty starter that can withstand the multiple restarts they also tend to have bigger batteries to manage the extra load.
At the end of the day is just personal preference. I personally hate it but I do use it bc I do see a difference in my fuel savings in city driving. On the highway on the other hand unless there is constant stop and go traffic you will rarely see any savings.

Toyota has moved to twin turbo charged V6 and employs MUCH thinner oil with less viscosity (Ow20). When the engine stops - oil will begin to drain back into the oil pan reducing the amount of already thin oil lubricating the EXTREMELY hot turbos (900 degrees) and rest of engine. Turbos already wear out much faster than any other engine component. Foolish to cause much more carbon creation just to save a few dollars on fuel. The cost of the carbon output to build two new turbos, the carbon created for a person to work to earn the money to purchase the new turbos, the cost of building rental or loaner cars while turbos are replaced . . . all far outweigh the meager fuel savings.

  • @mrvoyagerm

The engineers who designed the system have thought of this and used a starter that is more durable.
"But stopping and starting engines will consume more fuel!"
No, no it does not. Idling for 7 seconds will consume the same amount of fuel as stopping and starting an engine. Starting an engine takes a minuscule amount of fuel.

Ok, let me get this straight. You are not saving gas with the start stop bullcrap. U are wasting gas because it requires more gas to start an engine rather than letting it idle. And that is excess wear on the starter and the engine. Reply with your argument but ik what I'm talking about I have a lot of experience with engines and how they work and what's better for them. Thank you and have a good day
