    In model railroader magazine and classic toy trains there was an ad in the classified ads for a real estate company that specialized in homes that had unmovable layout that were considered to be a facet of the house considering how much expense and time was put into building them. One guy who bought one told his wife did she like the house and she said you haven't seen the upstairs yet that's it well I've seen the basement it's good enough for me. John Allen train layout watching to join him and so it burned the house to the ground. Imagine the model railroad club's that there are in the afterlife.

    There are very few real, truly made in the postwar era, postwar layouts still running. Almost none are on TH-cam it would seem, I have only found perhaps 2 or three counting this one. This is a true masterpiece, every singe detail. The way in which modified stock Lionel equipment was customized to become a unique model unlike any other, and such work as this does what most NEVER did- to go beyond the trodden path. To customize. To make something brand new, never seen before. To kitbash a toy train set in the postwar era. Let me tell you my friend, boy oh boy does that look good! If your grandfather were here, I'd be shaking his hand and telling him how much I was impressed by everything he'd done, that it was a true inspiration, and he had made not only my day, but one of the most unique railroads I'd ever seen out of nothing but Lionel trains, plywood, glue, matchsticks, paint, time, and a wealth of creativity. Just wait until I'm building my great layout- I can't wait until I can spend all the time I want, endlessly piecing together bridges from balsa wood and laying track, wiring switches, and of course, sitting back, relaxing, as I grab the throttle on my ZW and let 'er roll!

The sounds of those engines, and their heavy weight, along with the ozone smell and the overall feel of the thing. Lots of great memories are brought back when I watch this. Reminds me of my grandfathers layout in his attic. It was built in the mid 70s and in the mid 90s when he got diagnosed with cancer it just sat for many many years until I want to say 2010. My grandmother was moving so unfortunately it all had to come down but we plugged it in for one last time and everything worked just as it did. Even all the buildings lit up

    What a great postwar era layout, built just the way I might expect Joshua Lionel Cohen and the 'crew' himself may have intended back in the day. It's reminiscent of the old catalogs I would look through over and over dreams of my own layout planned out in notebooks. The days of youth, thanks for sharing your granddads with me. The 2025 steam locomotive always looks better with a 2 wheel trailing truck. Usher smaller engine built to a normal size looks much better than a big engine that has been crunched and compressed to run on 031 radius curves. Many railroads had prairie locomotive and they were fast and good running engines. Death valley Scotty used one on his world record attempt to go between Chicago and California. The switches were actually spike in place so he could run them at a much faster speed than normal on his speed record attempt.

      @@Jokers_Trains if you are going to sell the house you should sell it with the train layout intact I read in one of the railroad magazines that there are realtors who specialize in homes that have beautiful model railroads that they steer two people who would want to buy the house because of the model railroad in the basement. Of course by the time I posted that layout is probably torn down. Tearing down a layout is one of the worst things you have to do. With the modular built custom layouts like from Dunham's Studios they can arrange to have the layout picked up brought to their place and sold. So many of our layouts were built with the idea that they would never be torn down. They had a story about one couple looking at a house and while the wife was upstairs looking at the house the husband was downstairs with the owner looking at the layout in the basement. He came upstairs and told her that if she likes the upstairs he likes to downstairs. It's much nicer when a layout gets a new owner for the next 50 years.

    I now this is an old post but would love to know the actual size of this layout. It appears to be massive.

    • @Jokers_Trains
      @Jokers_Trains  ปีที่แล้ว

      Im watning to say it is around 10 or 12 x 16 or 18 feet. It helps all the curves are small.

    Either it’s a rare Lionel train accessory or your grandfather made it, How Did your grandfather get a functional Lionel postwar o27 turntable

    Is the track installed by your grandfather , is that what was called super 'O' ?

    • @Jokers_Trains
      @Jokers_Trains  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes this track was installed by my grandfather. This was just standard Lionel tubular track. He added some ties under the track. There was one stick of ross track in there that replaced a section of the lionel track.

    • @Jokers_Trains
      @Jokers_Trains  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marion County. The layout is empty now, the track is all still there but no engines or rolling stock unless I'm up to visit.

    • @charlieharper886
      @charlieharper886 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't blame you. I wouldn't want to leave that stuff sitting around somewhere like that, either. It's a neat old-school setup, though. I mean, DCC and the other modern stuff is fun but sometimes it's cool to see how this stuff was done "back in the day".

    • @Jokers_Trains
      @Jokers_Trains  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Next time I'm in WV I plan on making a new video. Set the layout up the way it was when my Grandfather was running it.

    lionel should go into affordable quality HO,I've read some reviews, and they don't seem to be doing to good with the big stuff.

    • @Jokers_Trains
      @Jokers_Trains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tony francesco they are on a rough stretch right now. But if they would go into HO I wouldn’t follow. Just not a HO kinda guy.

    • @bakerfamily3
      @bakerfamily3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I can see why one would think that lionel isn't doing to well right now, but I think the reason lionel isn't doing to well is probably because most people want more of the postwar stuff again I'm sure if lionel made engines look more vintage with magnetraction then their sales would be better. Also one last thing if lionel lowered their prices too, that would be better.
