    I laughed when you mentioned that the sonics of plate verb could change while using it...
    The first time I worked with the EMT 140 was back in the 80’s, as a young engineer; I was an A2 at that time, assisting a head engineer on a mix. The plate was located in the basement of the studio we were working in, with the only access to it being from the outside; similar to a storm cellar, with angled doors at ground level.
    We got the essentials of the mix dialed in, and took a break for lunch. When we returned, and started working the mix again, we both noticed that the verb on the lead vocal sounded dramatically different than it had earlier. It didn’t sound “bad”, nor did it sound “better”, just different.
    As it turned out, just before we had returned to the studio, the owner of the studio had opened the access doors of the basement, to get rid of a foot of snow that had accumulated on them from a storm the night before, and cold air then rushed into the basement, rapidly dropping the ambient temperature. That sudden temperature drop completely altered the sound of the plate.
    As the basement began to warm up again, the sound of the reverb gradually returned to where we’d set it. But, the head engineer then decided that he actually liked the sound of the “cold” plate better than the original “warm” one...
    I half-jokingly asked him if he wanted me to go out and open the basement doors again; he smiled, but didn’t laugh, and he said, “Yeah, I do, but we’d better print the warm reverb as it is now, just in case I change my mind later.”
    This is the sort of experience that a modern recording engineer won’t encounter...
    unless plug manufacturers start putting virtual doors and temperature adjustments on their reverb plugs. 🤣🤣

      Thanks for your story. The closer I get to making something and releasing it that I'm proud of, the further I feel I get from records that I have heard with with warmth and character that of analogue gear from those times. Things change but I guess I'm starting to feel a little less impressed by what I'm doing on my lil computer when I hear a story like this. But nevertheless different paths but same journey.

    • @briancase6180
      @briancase6180 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right! I was thinking the plug-in programmers could read the temperature sensors for the cpu or the system board to simulate the effects of long recording session.... 😏

    • @thearcaneplane2791
      @thearcaneplane2791 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@briancase6180 Man.. That's an idea.. Is that even possible? And even if it is, wouldn't it essentially just be a code written into the program simulating the warmth... and when do you tell the plugin to do such a thing.

    • @briancase6180
      @briancase6180 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thearcaneplane2791 Of course it's possible: you can get a utility (Intel makes one for its chips) that will report current values of the various temperature sensors in your system. A plugin could use the same APIs to access the sensors. So, yeah, the code would assume that the plate is warming up in synchrony with the system or the CPU. Since, after all, the "plate" is *in* the program, which is in the system or the CPU, depending on your point of view.... :)

    I’ve own this for a few months. I actually got it when it was free. I can honestly say that it’s one of my favorite reverbs I own. I have all the Valhalla, IK Multimedia, exponential audio (my other go to), waves, and several others. I play aggressive but atmospheric music so reverb is something that is a big part of my sound so I’ve tried/bought a lot of reverb plugins. This to my ears is one of the best. Not for every situation but when I need a plate reverb this is my go to. Even though I got it for free I would happily pay for it. Outstanding reverb.

  • @DavidRosario69
    @DavidRosario69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I would argue that the linearity and predictably is a good thing. In the world of DAWs, we like the instant recall of sessions. Why, then, would we want randomized reverb? If I dial in the exact setting that sounds good, I wouldn't want it to change.

    • @OceillTV
      @OceillTV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree about the predictability. However, non-linearity does not imply inability for recall. All of the distortion plugins in your DAW work in a non-linear fashion. Gated reverbs are non-linear (unless it's a convolution model of a gated reverb). Compressors are non-linear.
      The only thing that convolution reverbs cannot emulate properly is the non-linear behaviour of some of these units (bear in mind, algorithmic reverbs certainly could), which can often be one of the qualities that people seek in them. Just to reiterate, seeking non-linearity doesn't mean one is seeking unpredictability.

    • @DavidRosario69
      @DavidRosario69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @BTHanissBEATS Non-linearality is math. Polynomials are non-linear, and they don't give life to anything. Non-linear results can be used to add flavor, but that's not the only way to do it.

  • @JDLViewer
    @JDLViewer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've got to say that this is easily one of the most immediately usable plate emulations I've tried. It is easy to set into a mix and add a vibe that not one other of my plate reverbs could (and not that the others were bad). I've got Lexicon, Eventide, UAD (which is superb), Waves, and Valhalla. All of them could deliver various plate sounds, but this one ended up quite more organic and absolutely perfect for certain results. This plugin is easily worth its' asking price.

    • @JDLViewer
      @JDLViewer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm now going to add, for other high quality differing sound,
      Ecoplate from Hear360
      Transatlantic Plate Reverb from Rare Signals.
      There are others of note (Waves Abbey Road), but these REALLY stand out to my ears.
      The Transatlantic version is quite spectacular.
      What a time we live in that we have this kind of technology to be coming forward with such a high quality, and also being so much more affordable.

    I like a plate on vocals for getting a vintage sound. It's a more muscular tone that becomes part of the voice better than the warm smooth surrounding bath of modern digital reverb. You and I both own real plates so you know what I'm talking about. I've tried about 6 plate plugins so far including UA and they sound pretty close to me. All those old plates had a different characteristic even though they were the same brand and model due to age of plate, any damage and especially how it's tuned. RCA in Nashville had 3 monos in the basement and they would turn the air conditioner on cold in the plate room a few hours before the sessions started. The colder they got the tighter and more highs even beyond tightening the clips as tight as they can get without breaking. I noticed a couple of plugins had that characteristic warble to the sound caused by some slight bends in the plate making it even more realistic. UA plugin sounded really good to me . Plugins are cool because you can use so many different instances without tons of money and a dedicated room to hold them. Like a giant microphone.

    Been using this one for a couple of months. I get lost in it sometimes, I put it on snares and toms as well then post-filter them (EQ) a bit and the results are really good, impressive actually. But you can only use it on very specific elements so its quite edgy thinking outside the box with this. Overall it does wonders to drum sequences as well as textures! I still have lot to learn though.

I also love their own digital algorithms from their Intensify reverb A LOT and have been waiting for an excuse to use their spring verb on an appropriate source - their examples sound amazing so I just need an appropriate track befitting of a characterful spring.

    Maybe using the modulation can give some variable in the sound to give a more realistic effect? Sounded pretty good anyhow!

    i tried this plugin too when it was free. idk.. maybe i was just not in the mood enough but i didn't feel it then. it's really hard to make an objective statement about reverbs though. sometimes i perceive them drastically different

    I have it and it is so awesome.
    It sounds amazing on drums most of the time.
    That´s its main use for my mixes.
    It has a raw character that fits well with drums.

    Good video. I guy this when it was free: I feel very lucky. Just one nit: when you say "linear" you mean "deterministic." The plug-in is deterministic compared to the hardware, which is affected by heat, etc.

    Wow that sounds really nice. I'd say it's better if the reverbs consistant. Though they could add a button to make it more random.

    Yeah, i got this one for free somewhere in around Joelfeest or so but now my DAW (Harrison MIxbus 32c) has a new version wich doesn't support VST3's anymore, bummer! I liked this reverb...

    I like this Arturia one. I do think the UAD EMT 140 sounds a wee bit nicer. I the controls layout is nicer too. But this one is worth it for the price.

      i got it just because it was free but it turned out to be a nice plugin to have, too band it's a bit heavy on cpu

      Don't you love it how plugins go from free to 100 $ the next day. Really don't understand why devs do this.

    Sounds pretty good! I am really keen on the Valhalla Plate (algorithmic) and the Waves Abbey Roads Plates as well (one of the only Waves plugins I care for). Just wondering though, if you thought the sound was lacking variance and movement, wouldn't the modulation section be worth digging into? I haven't used this plugin, so I'm not sure if it is on the natural/random side or more of an LFO but it might give you some of what you are missing!

      The waves plate is the best plate I heard yet ITB. But it's impossible to work with in dense projects as it's literally eating CPU for breakfast and Waves doesn't care about optimization and multi core support. I have long ago deleted my Waves folder.

    It does sound amazing, but I struggle to use it on stuff. I reach for Little Plate more than I do this. I find it more versatile oddly enough.

    test to automate the predelay ... this sound smooth , no jump in value , very very great for some chorus type effect on the input ... i don't know why they put a such predelay in repitch mode and not on jump value but when ieared how it sounds while moving this knob , i directly though about moving or automate it while sound playing thru .... unbeatable space chorus/ effect on horns or pads.

    How does it compare with the waves abbey road plate plugin? I have the native instruments one and kind of like the gui of the waves one but is it worth buying just for the pretty interface ?

    Review the Fuse Audio Labs TCS-68. It's a saturator and EQ that's supposed to sound like an old Tascam 688 recorder.
