Hi Kacy, I am a fellow SLP. Whoop Whoop!!! I've been practicing for over 13 years. Your excitement and enthusiasm is great, which is why I just subscribed to you. Like you, I love our profession and wouldn't trade it for the world. I can't wait to see more. So keep inspiring others. They won't be disappointed. 😊
Hey, thank you for this great video! I have been so lost, in community college and trying to find a career that would match all the points I love : Helping others, medical, opportunities... I think I found it! Thank you so much! You will make an amazing speech pathologist :)
thank you for making this! you definitely encouraged me to look more into this and seriously consider this for a major.... I can tell you have a great personality and will make a great SLP one day
I have been so confused what i want to do with life haha! I am a freshmen in college and know i want to work with people. I used to want to do nursing but a lot of science isn't my thing (bio chem).. I love kids and was thinking education but jobs honestly are not there, thats why I am thinking SLP, the jobs are their and pay is a lot better!
I know this is 2 years old but I am in the same spot right now im in A health science major right now but will be transferring to communications hopefully it will be an easy process coming from Junior college to transferring to a 4-year
Hi Kacy, I want to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. You are an inspiration to all people looking to find a career in speech-language pathology. I have been a SLP for many years and will be presenting about SLP at a high school career fair and would like to show a part of your video to the group. I just wanted to make sure you are ok with this. Keep inspiring!
YES GIRL! I’m interested in the SLP program and I’m tired of people telling me that it’s just about teaching the A O E sounds... because it’s so much more than that! And yeah 8:18 is almost how I feel rn lol
This video almost made me cry because it really made me realize that this is the field I want to be in. My career goal has always been to wake up and make a difference in someone's life. I knew I could do that as a teacher but not only does SLP pay better but you get so much more out of it. Through one on ones with the patients and working in different settings and alongside many other professionals. I am 24 and only just now becoming a junior after changing my major twice and I finally feel that I am on the right path. Your videos have been a big part of this decision. Thank you!
Wow this is really great! Thank you so much!!!! I have been trying to choose a major for my whole freshman year and I was heading towards nursing but this whole time I really think I was just settling for it because I don't know what I REALLY want to do. This really helped me think about something I would actually enjoy this major. Thank you again!!!
yes!!! communication is everything! so happy to see your passion for SLP! go you!!! you will do great things!! I'm majoring in communication disorders and I'm so in love with it!! cant wait to complete my schooling and get my masters! =)
KlassicKacy thanks love! Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed with school I love to watch these type of videos as a wonderful reminder of why Ian doing that and it's a great reassurance that I am still on the right path to an amazing career ❤️👌🏼
KlassicKacy I bet! I'm currently a ece teacher and before this i was a caregiver to stroke clients and these types of jobs are so amazingly rewarding but I know slp is just my passion and I am working toward that. :)
Thank you so much for making this very informative video! I have been struggling with finding a major while at community college and stumbled upon the bachelor's programs offered at my desired university and I found a degree called Communication Sciences and Disorders and all the classes in the program intrigued me. I think the combination of speech, psychology, and helping people make this a perfect career track for me. I'm so excited to start this path.
I just found this major because I just got my associates degree and I got into the Speech Pathology program at a university. I am very timid cause at first I wasn't sure what I wanted to do however, you brought my spirits up about my future! I wanna thank you for this video and your bright personality! 😊
I like your delivery. I'm so happy you like what you're doing and have a great attitude about it. :-). I have been going back and forth about this profession for years now and after teaching Special Needs children, I am more confident that this is what I want to do. I'm scared about getting accepted into a program, not gonna lie ;-)
yes girl! I'm sure you're doing great right now in the field. I am going to be a communicative disorders major in the fall in college.. I can't wait :)
Hey Kacy, new subscriber here! I'm a future SLP major this upcoming fall. Like yess lol. My question is, what made you want to major in this field/interested in it? and any other specific tips for being this major you didn't mention?? So great to see a sister in this field and congrats on soon becoming a certified SLP and on your masters. Yass
+Bryana Mitchell Awh thank you for subscribing!! I became interested in this field when I realized my own fascination with communication like I mentioned in the video. Then I thought, gosh is must really suck for people who don't have the opportunity to communicate. So I wanted to be the person who helped :) I think I covered all my tips in this video but feel free to look at my study tips video! Leave any questions you think of and I will do my best to answer or make a video about them! lol And I know yaaayy for brown girl slps! lol
This is such an informative video! Thank you for sharing. I am a freshman in college considering eventually majoring in Speech Pathology, and this really helped me decide!
Love this! Definitely considering this field as a college graduate of 2016. Also I peeped the ring! Is that from the pinky promise boutique?!? I was so hype when I saw it! Thank you so much for this.
I was the Coordinator of the Speech-Language Pathology Program in the Atlanta Public Schools for many years! I would have hired you in a HEARTBEAT! I hope you are enjoying your career as an SLP!
Hello! I just wanted to know how important is it to know the anatomy of the ear and brain when it comes to being a SLP? I know in intro to communications disorders it is huge however I imagine it is more important to know how to detect and assess a disorder rather than knowing the names and functions of the ear. Thanks!
Hey! And thanks for watching :) It is important to know the anatomy of all parts of the body that is used to produce speech or might affect the ability to communicate properly. You'll learn these mostly in your anatomy or neuro class within your speech program and about the ear in audiology. You have to know how something functions normally, in order to know when it isn't functioning properly, the impact it has on speech, and the best ways to treat it! Some things as far as names and functions are just apart of the classes. It's just because it's school lol you need a good base level of knowing the anatomy so you can have a good understanding when it's time to rehabilitate skills. Hope this helps!
KlassicKacy wow thanks for the response! Highly considering CSD as a major and then eventually becoming a SLP! Thanks so much for the info and your channel has been very helpful so keep it up(:
2 years later and I'm commenting haha! But i am 14, about to enter high school. I used to go to speech therapy when I was small and I just fell in love with the way they do their work! I want to be a speech pathologist/ speech therapist, (idk what the difference is) but my mom does not approve 😪 she says it's not a good job, but I need more advice can you plz help me! 1. Is this a job that won't go wrong? Like I'll graduate, and will I be able to live well? 2. Is the paying good enough to start being independent 3. Is the path / classes hard?? Plz reply it will mean a lot
Hey girl! I'm sorry my response is so late I remember reading this but I guess my response didn't come through :/ Let me answer this way : 1. YES- I haven't heard not one sob story about financial hiccups of SLPs. Promise. 2. Yes, after you reach a certain level of education and it depends on your region, but generally, yes. 3. The classes aren't easy, but if I'm being honest with you, if I can do it, YOU CAN TOO! All I did was commit to it and study the material. That's all there is to school. Pay attention, take great notes, learn your learning style in regards to the best way to review and teach yourself the material, apply it, graduate and done! Keep doing your research and as you continue to learn more about the field, enlighten your mom to maybe show her some things she may not have known as well! Hey you can even show her my video lol :)
i just loved, loved, loved your video! Very informative and inspiring. I'm also interested in becoming apart of the SLP family, but I have a Bachelor's in Biology. Would I still be able to move forward into SLP grad school with this degree??
Would you recommend this to an over 40-year-old wanting to change careers? There's a great SLP Master's program in my community and it's a job that's in high demand in my state! BUT... you think I'm "too old"?? I'm 45 and by the time I finish the post-baccalaureate leveling program and the master's, I'll be close to 50! (!) Great job on the video by the way, it was so helpful!
Mister Chicken AB👏🏾SO👏🏾LUTE👏🏾LY👏🏾 NOT!!!! You go for it!!! Everything I say on this channel all the encouragement I give goes for everyone all ages shapes colors sizes everything. You will love it!
My school doesn’t offer communications of sciences disorders major . I was wondering what you thought would be a good thing for me to major in ? That could still get me a job after graduating
what would you say to deciding between social work and slp? i was considering double majoring in undgergrad and grad school, but i presume it'd be extremely rigorous
that would be pretty rigorous but, you have to decided if you truly want to do it and if that's the case- go for it! You'll be great at anything you put your mind to!
hey! I went to undergrad at Western Carolina University and grad school at South Carolina State University. My parents paid for my undergrad so I didn't have any loans. And then I took out loans for grad school!
hey! yes you could it would probably take you 3 years instead of 2 because you wouldn't have a bachelors in speech. but it is possible! thanks for watching!!!
hey! yes you could it would probably take you 3 years instead of 2 because you wouldn't have a bachelors in speech. but it is possible! thanks for watching!!!
Daniela Hurtado I have my bachelors in sociology as well And to get in most masters programs you need the prerequisites. I am currently taking prerequisites now.
Nothing I can think of in high school hun, but if you have an SLP who comes in and out, contact them to learn more about what it is they do. That's what I did in high school!
late to this video, but i’m a freshman this upcoming year and i am very interested in speech path. i really want to go through this process to my end goal, but lots of things scare me and intimidate me. firstly, the math (stat) and chem class required as a requisite for the major at my school intimidate me as these are two of my very difficult subjects. i have never been good at math, or chemistry in high school. i do not want my gpa to fall so much from these courses that i cannot get into grad school! i also know for sure that life is stressful, but as of now i don’t think i have all the correct coping mechanisms to deal with the great deal of stress so many Slps say they have gone through to get their masters and CCCs. I need advice!
Hey! So the thing about that is, you can't prevent stressful situations from happening. You just have to learn the coping mechanisms and find a good balance between life and school for you. You're a freshman so you have time. Don't over think it. I don't know you but I'm sure you've been through some tough times. You can handle it! When it comes to those classes, just make sure you focus. And don't take them the same semester so you can focus on them one at a time. You got this!
thank you so much for this video, i am close to graduating with my bachelors and was so distraught with what to do next, this is if anything a possibility i can pursue so thank you, just a (stupid) question, how intense and difficult is the science of the program? i come from a liberal arts/sociology background
thank you for watching!! As far as the science part goes it is a little intense. Because you're essentially learning the anatomy from the waist up. BUT don't let that discourage you, if you go to grad school for this, you will have other classmates you can so study groups with. As long as you can give time towards studying then you'll be good. Plus its super interesting so that always makes it more motivating to learn and study lol thanks again :)
Hello I'm a senior in high school and plan on majoring in Speech Pathology. I am really passionate about choosing this major however I am not the best at science so how would I cope with that?
Hey girl! check out my klassic study tips video! To be honest, I have never considered myself the smartest person in the world, BUT I learned how I learn and how to teach myself the material I needed to know. Check out that video and see if it helps you at all! Let me know if there are any other questions you have :) Thanks for watching!
Dalila Hendrix I'm in my senior year of my speech language pathology program and the major is time consuming but manageable. It is not a "c's get degrees" major. Grad school is very selective. You need high grades, you need As. You need volunteer hours and your professors need to know who you are so they can write you amazing letters of recommendation. I've always thought of myself as smart and hard working but when everyone in the major had the same attitude you need to put in the time to make yourself stand out. Major advisors at my university are Very honest and tell students who have been getting Cs and Bs that it's probably time to change their major because they're not getting into grad school with those grades. In most university the major will only offer you slp classes during one time, so the flexibility kinda sucks in that regard. You're just going to have to start carrying around a planner and write out your entire life. Free time is now reading/studying/homework time.
You can do part time if need be. School is school. It's always going to be there so get through it the way you know how and the way you can for the time being. Don't let the situation make you pull back from starting to work toward your goals! My grad program had night classes. They didn't start until 5pm and they were only three days a week. So pretty much everyone was able to work during the day. If you're talking about undergrad, find a program that's suitable for you and go at your own pace. Anything is possible! You can achieve anything your truly want to achieve!
Hello Kacy! I love your videos. I am a 20 year old girl having a horrid quarter life crisis because I don't know what I am doing with my life and, frankly, I want to to SLP but I keep reading on the internet that getting into grad school is impossible blah blah blah and GPA this Gpa that. I am a very good student got all As last semester, but this semester I got a C on just one quiz and I feel really bad about it and I am so scared of keeping my grades up for grad school. Do you really think that it's an achievable goal because I keep hearing grad school is impossible to gain a spot in if you aren't academically perfect and that a 3.0 is bad blah blah blah.
YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!!!! Child one semester I had a B, a C, AND a withdrawal ALL in one semester on my transcript. YOU CAN DO IT. trust me. I would encourage you to watch my SLP Q+A video, as well as the two videos I have titled "5 Things nobody tells you about grad school". I think these will really help!
Celene Frodema Hi! I know at my undergrad institution we had our hearing tested and read a passage aloud to assess our personal ability to be successful in the program. If anything was abnormal then we were allowed to appeal and retest, but after being retested we then had to enroll in therapy or services to improve whatever was determined to be an issue. Then later a retest would be administered to make sure whatever was holding someone back was corrected before moving on in the program. As long as the person followed the treatment plan set for them and fixed what needed fixing, they're allowed to stay. 😊
Kaitlin Gallardo you need a masters degree to be an slp. You could get a bachelors in something random like criminology and apply to a grad school with that. But you're going to have to take pre reqs that an slp bachelors or something in communicative disorders would have given you. Your masters needs to be speech language pathology. But the pre reqs are probably going to add a year to the masters program you're a part of, so instead of a 2 year program you would be in a 3 year program. Keep your grades high! And good luck! (I'm a senior in college and will have my bachelors in Speech language pathology soon )
Hey kacy! I’m currently a sophomore in college and am taking my gre early on but I suck at the verbal section! I took a practice test and I got like a 140 on it 😭😭 do you have any advice how to do good on verbal? Please help 😭😭
Hey! Girl unfortunately I just had to wing the GRE and at this point it was so long ago I don't even remember what I got on it I just know it was a low score lol smh I didn't even study for it 🥴 I'm sorry!!
Aww thank you tho! I think I really want to become an SLP but my fears keep holding me back. Like my fears of not doing well or not getting into grad school 😭😭
Also my school only gives a bachelor for Speech Communication and a minor in Communication sciences in order to qualify for our own masters program. Do you think this will also qualify me for other programs!
I know this video is old lol but hopefully you can still see my comment! I’m a senior in high school but I’ve been doing so much research on this major and I just know that this is what I want to do! I’ve been having trouble finding colleges that I can get into that have a bachelors program for this. I’ve tried to do research on what you can do for your bachelors, and eventually get into a graduate program, but I’m super confused. Do you know what the specific programs are that you have to take ?
Brielan Richardson hey there! Thanks for watching! And what do you mean by specific programs? When you look for bachelor programs it may say speech pathology and audiology it may say communication sciences and disorders. Those are the only two I know but call the schools you're interested in and ask if they have speech pathology. And they should point you in the right direction! Hope this helped :)
Yes it did thank you so much! I was just confused on how it all worked because I’ve heard some people say it doesn’t matter what you get your bachelors in but I wasn’t sure if that was true.
Brielan Richardson it matters to a degree. When you go to grad school if you have a bachelors in speech pathology (communication sciences and disorders, etc) then you may be on a two year track because you have a background. If you do anything else, it may put you on a three year track.
I'm a junior in HS who's questioning what I want to do lol. I first wanted to be a nurse because my mom is, then I wanted to be a teacher just a while ago then I changed back to a nurse. Now I don't want to be either XD. I really thought about it but.. I just don't want to be a nurse or a teacher... I want to help others especially children but nothing really just got my attention when it come to the different stuff in nursing and teaching...I don't really like the idea of teaching kids in a group. I like the more one-on-one thing and I didn't even know speech pathologist existed until today xD. I had to go to speech when I was little because I would say words like fish and instead say pish and another sound too but I forgot. I like the idea of speech pathologist and what they do soo it will definitely be something I look more into and consider as the career! Thanks for this video!
Since you are a Speech Pathologist, just be careful when you said at 4:16, "People have a understanding," or "a office," at 1:00. Not trying to sound mean or anything, it's just something I've noticed and wanted to point out so you can correct it. :)
Smh. She is not an English teacher. She is a speech pathologist. And any Linguist will tell you that language is about communication/understanding and you clearly understood her.
Justine Salisbury There's a difference between standard American English (commonly used in academic settings) and regional dialects. Kacy can use a regional, urban dialect and vernacular in her speeches in her personal settings and still separate that from how she talks and teaches as an SLP.
Hi Kacy, I am a fellow SLP. Whoop Whoop!!! I've been practicing for over 13 years. Your excitement and enthusiasm is great, which is why I just subscribed to you. BUT... you think I'm "too old"?? I'm 45 and by the time I finish the post-baccalaureate leveling program and the master's, I'll be close to 50! (!) Great job on the video by the way, it was so helpful!
Mister Chicken AB👏🏾SO👏🏾LUTE👏🏾LY👏🏾 NOT!!!! You go for it!!! Everything I say on this channel all the encouragement I give goes for everyone all ages shapes colors sizes everything. You will love it!
Which state are you in where it's in hugh demand?
My school doesn’t offer communications of sciences disorders major . I was wondering what you thought would be a good thing for me to major in ? That could still get me a job after graduating
You are SO pretty!!!
Lilly Bell Looks Awh thank you!!
what would you say to deciding between social work and slp? i was considering double majoring in undgergrad and grad school, but i presume it'd be extremely rigorous
that would be pretty rigorous but, you have to decided if you truly want to do it and if that's the case- go for it! You'll be great at anything you put your mind to!
what school did you attend for undergraduate? can you make a video about how you financed your education?
hey! I went to undergrad at Western Carolina University and grad school at South Carolina State University. My parents paid for my undergrad so I didn't have any loans. And then I took out loans for grad school!
Hello I'm currently an undergrad sociology major and was wondering if I would still be able to get into grad school for speech pathology
hey! yes you could it would probably take you 3 years instead of 2 because you wouldn't have a bachelors in speech. but it is possible! thanks for watching!!!

Daniela Hurtado I have my bachelors in sociology as well And to get in most masters programs you need the prerequisites. I am currently taking prerequisites now.
yay!!
can you guide me am 15 and am very interested in SPL. Any subjects related to it in high School cause I love helping people.
KlassicKacy thanks for the inspiration!
How much do SLP make in your state?
thank you so much for this video, i am close to graduating with my bachelors and was so distraught with what to do next, this is if anything a possibility i can pursue so thank you, just a (stupid) question, how intense and difficult is the science of the program? i come from a liberal arts/sociology background
thank you for watching!!
Let me know if there are any other questions you have :) Thanks for watching!
what undergrad program did you do?
Hi. How are you. That sounds amazing. Would you recommend this degree for someone with a massage therapy background?
clarkkentnaruto if its something if you are truly interested in absolutely!
do you have to be strong in biology to take this major? I often hear that when I bring up this major to my friends
Is it possible to become a speech pathologist internationally or in another country??
Yes! Different education requirements I think for anyone doing a program out of the country but even if you did it in the US you can be a travel SLP
Hello,
SLP is my major & I was wondering if you did any internships in your undergraduate years. If so, what were they?
Heyy!! I didn't do any internships I just did a couple observation hours! I hope your year goes well & thank you for watching!!
Hey I have a question hopefully you can respond!
Sure what is it?
what was your gpa for your undergraduate degree? Did you get into grad school right away
I had a 3.7 in undergrad and yes, I got into school right away.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to major in slp but is in a situation where they have to work full time?
You can achieve anything your truly want to achieve!
although the major is not easy it is definitely possible to finish and get into graduate school without a perfect transcript, I'm a living witness.
hey, great video! what school are you in?
thank you! I attended south carolina state university for grad school and western carolina university for undergrad!
You're the best!
Hey girl question here can you chose a focus like if I want to work with kids can I focus on that in grad school?
It depends on your program. We didn't have a real choice..but some programs are structured to where you are able to choose a specialty!
Thanks
KlassicKasy hi I have a slight lisp with sh and ch will that hinder me in being a speech pathologist
Hi Kacy! Is it possible to major in something else and still become an SLP?
Kaitlin Gallardo absolutely!! go for it!
(I'm a senior in college and will have my bachelors in Speech language pathology soon )
yay! love when viewers connect! @Beatriz is correct! I also have a SLP Q+A video you are welcome to watch!
@@Mal-nd4nc you just have to do the research on what other programs require and you'll know exactly what you need!
Justine Salisbury you must be fun at parties
