I was also stuck particularly on this part, which is why I turned to TH-cam and came across your channel. Your series helped the few blocks I had studying Messiaen’s musical language, thank you very much!

Thank you very much and I’m glad the videos are helpful. I’m going to start working through his Treatise in 2024.

Hey Andrew, been watching through the series and wanted to say thanks for the breakdowns and insights! Was interested in discovering how Christian Mysticism influenced Messiaen and found some hints/clues from your videos

Excellent, thanks. Did you see the video where I talk about andrew Shenton’s book , « Messiaen the Theologian »? th-cam.com/video/6fJbKJBl13o/w-d-xo.html. That book is a great resource.

Hey Andrew, thanks for this great video!
I was wondering in which piece(es) Messiaen is using the Chord on the dominat?

Hey thanks for the comment. This chord (and all techniques described in this book) are common in his music written in the 1940’s. He certainly keeps this harmonic language through this career but I find it really central in this earlier phase. A good place to start would be the Quartet for the End of Time.
