- The viral video of KCBS reporter Serene Branson having what many speculated to be a stroke, turned out to be a migraine. Branson spoke with Rebecca Jarvis on what she has learned since that frightening night.
This is a very well-handled interview. It's gentle, but specific, and the questions are just the right kind of open-ended and probing without being too overwhelming and broad. I like the kindness of this reporter and how she handles the story.
Glad she figured out what happened, and that it was not a serious stroke. Hope she is doing well now.

Migraines are weird - I have an oddball kind that make me blind, literally, for 10 or 15 minutes. This stuff is kinda comical but when the stuff happens to you it can be pretty frightening. I though I had a brain tumor....
guymerritt: My first before the word scramble was sudden blindness. Everything went black. I thought it was a stroke. Disconcerting. I was driving on a mountain road at the time. Later the neurologist said this was not the normal kind of stroke. I put a comment out over Craigslist. Fellow named 'Sam' responded. He had one as well. He remembered falling to the floor with papers strewn about. May 14, 2011. 2nd event, today 9/7/2018. speech affected. This is scary stuff. 2 people near Portland, Oregon
I get the aura, but not the pain. It's some weirdness in my peripheral vision.
I knew a woman who would go blind for almost a whole day every time she got a migraine. She would be fine afterwards, it was weird like you said.
I had a severe migrain after PE in the 9th grade. I was trying to shake it off but it got worse so I got up to ask to see the nurse. When I stood up I got dizzy and my Vision dropped, my hands tangled and my feet felt heavy. I spoke gibberish to the teacher...she looked at me like I was speaking another Language....she specifically told me when I got back the next week that thought I was speaking another language. On that day she didn't want me to walk go the nurse alone because my eyes were jumping and I looked pale.. another student went with me but we didn't make it. I had to lay on the floor and the nurse came to me..they called my dad, he took me to the ER. It was a severe migrain.
What a brave young woman. It makes me feel panicky seeing that video and imagining the sheer terror she must have felt. I pray that was the one and only time that ever happens to her. Knowledge of the condition is a powerful tool at least. I've had panic attacks and once I knew what they felt like, I learned to control them before they'd get out of hand. Bless her!
When she started to say "a very busy week" @0:38 I was SO ready for her to say "a very heaveh- uh- heavy d-bertation."

It's good to know she is alright. I hope it doesn't happen again. I'm glad it wasn't a stroke, but it is still serious. migraines can be a risk and precursor to the event of strokes. Further, studies show that the risk of strokes in persons with migraine with aura are greater than without aura.
This is one of the scariest things about migraines... I have those crazy "word salad" moments with mine... all you can do is hold on for the ride until your body makes sense again. You're a brave person, Serene, to go public and explain what happened. I can imagine that you helped people who might have to face this!

Poor thing! This happened to me once when I was simply singing along to the radio in the car. I knew the song well, but I couldn't make any normal words. It scared me a lot because I thought I might pass out or that I was having a stroke or heart attack. Fortunately it has not happened again. I can't imagine how awful it would be for it to happen on live TV!

I'm happy your transient aphasic episode was caught on camera, you have video evidence of what happened and it's easier to explain to the doc. I had a similar experience that prompted me to go to Emergency. 4hrs of testing & a CT Scan, later & I had my answer. Those things I was seeing b4 a migraine are called scintillating scotoma's. Yay! Finally an answer that it's not just all in my head... Except, that it was. The scotoma's were caused by a 5cm cystic lesion in my left parietal lobe, a meningioma brain tumor, about the size of a 🍋 lemon. Always remember F.A.S.T. Face drooping, Arm weakness, Confused or Slurred Speech, Time is Brain! You might be having a stroke, call 911 u only have a 4.5 hr window to get clot-busting drugs tPA needed to save your life!
Well, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, but I'm glad it happened to her on live TV during such a high profile event because it's brought a lot of awareness to a problem that she isn't alone in suffering from. That has to be a good thing. Feel better Serene!

She got right back on the horse- very good idea. Many broadcasters suffer hugely from things like this, and it can cause a self confidence loop that can end careers. Musicians can suffer from physical stresses that cause anxiety that descends into very serious problems. Glad she had the courage to get on air and discuss it - face it head on. Good choices.

everyone is being very negative with her because unless it happens to you, I wouldn't say anything. I, on the other hand, do suffer from migraine "strokes" and its a pain. Now I stutter and can't get all my words out sometimes. its truly a drag. So people have some compassion towards your fellow human beings.

I have had severe yet but short lived migraine headaches(they usually last between 3 to 6 hours)my whole life but when I was younger I actually had a couple incidents like this with no real pain when I was about 16 or 17 years old but never knew what they were until now and had no idea that they were also migraines.
(I'm almost 50 now.)
I thought I was having precursors or warning signs of a stroke, as many people in my family have had strokes. Mine were caused by a defect in my skull, but the symptoms didn't get bad till my 30s. When you get spinning vertigo so bad, you can't open your eyes let alone stand, and it feels like an ice pick has been driven through the top of your skull, you know something is wrong. When its over, your forehead is covered in sweat, and you feel like you just ran 10 blocks.
I think Serene was trying to say, "Well, a very VERY happy occasion tonight." I'm not aware she subsequently has revealed what she was trying to say so this is just my best guess. I haven't seen anything of her since. I hope she is okay.
Some people are making fun of Serene, but they certainly won't be laughing if it happened to them.
Nope, they wouldn't. I had it happen to me when an MRSA infection nearly made it to my brain (how it nearly did is a long story) and if I hadn't already been in the hospital, I'd have been dead. It didn't matter how hard I tried to force the words, they wouldn't come. Lucky the night nurse on duty recognized something serious was going on.

I hope she gets an MRI, CT scan and EEG, EKG. I was diagnosed with a benign parasagittal sinus meningioma (brain tumor) on the top left side almost 2 yrs ago. I had headaches almost daily prior. I had gamma knife treatment but the tumor is still there and I am facing brain surgery. I have seizures like hers and even stronger ones even though I am on anti-seizure meds. I hope she isn't driving the if this happens to her again. I hope she gets the help and diagnosis needed.

Stroke or focal seizure (if u arent epileptic) should have entered your mind immediately and you should have gotten off air immediately not continued like u did. This could have gone real bad real quick. U got lucky

Hey....you can't help but laugh, but I have something called "opthalmic migraines" and I go completely blind for about 10 to 15 minutes. I mean, Ray Charles had 20/20 vision by comparison - I can't see anything. Migraines do scary, weird shit. By the way, there's another video of Serene watching this and laughing her own ass off - so I guess you can't help but laugh....
