  • On Megyn Kelly TODAY, Megyn is joined by Addie Zinone, who recounts a brief sexual relationship she had with former TODAY anchor Matt Lauer 17 years ago when she was a 24-year-old production assistant for the show. While acknowledging that the relationship was consensual and that she has “a lot of shame attached to what I did,” she also describes the “power imbalance” that colored it.

      The greater topic of discussion is that sexual abuse is centred around someone of power that exploits their own position to abuse others of lower stature. Sure this woman knew the opportunities that would arise if she went along with the affair, but regardless of her intentions Matt Lauer would still be using this tactic on other women or abuse them in other ways in the workplace. This story highlights the many facets of a perpetrator's mind and less so of the women involved.

    I can see both sides to this. I used to work at a restaurant while I was in college. I was 20-22. My 50-something year old married GM constantly and I mean _constantly_ hit on me. Looking back, I should’ve quit because he made me so uncomfortable- but I stuck it out. The power imbalance is a very real thing that a lot of women have to deal with. I still felt like a kid, even at 21. However I was smart enough to not sleep with him. I was old enough to realize that he was a creep. He was a very good looking man too. He’d always offer me training positions, he offered me a manager position, gave me the best shifts, favored me in front of everyone that it made people hate me there. I still shudder thinking about what I was put through and I didn’t even sleep with the guy! BUT I can hold my head high knowing no matter what anyone else thought of me, I kept my dignity and chose not to sleep with a married man. I’m now a successful professional woman who never slept with any man to get to where I am

Matt Lauer is gross and he was abusive to Ann Curry. He was protected because of his background. That tribe will always protect their own. The fact that he even had that much power has just as much to do with discrimination as it does talent. Who says HE deserved to be where he was in life ? I am currently 24 and I have been propositioned by a married boss twice my age. We would always joke back and for about frivolous platonic things. But one day I happened to walk pass him outside of work and he told me to come back to his hotel room. I thought he was joking because we always joke but then when I realized he was serious, I laughed and said "No, I'm sure your wife wouldn't like that" and walked off quickly. And he never made any uncomfortable advances like that to me again. He respected my boundaries and we continued to keep it professional with the occasional joke here and there. I think the main point here is to trust your gut, when you feel like you are in a comprimising position regardless of the potential benefits you may acquire from submitting to it.

    • @christophertyler5544
      @christophertyler5544 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm glad you told this story Alisha as I have compassion for anyone who is truly victimized, but I have also found with the #metoo movement and everything we are now hearing that women are being painted very much weaker than they are. While in my experience, and I've seen it happen twice, when a woman lays down the ground rules and is firm - it will, more times than not - put a stop to things. It usually embarrasses the other individual, as well, and makes them a better person. On the other hand, yes, there are truly some rogues out there, but by and large, at least the ones I know...most men are not animals and will back off when signals are clear.
      Which is a bit of a problem in and of itself and very much depends on individuals involved in a particular situation and how each of them perceives things, etc. As flirting is a delicate art and a woman may not be flirting at all in her own mind. Thus the need for absolute clarity and firmness. It won't solve every problem, but I'm pretty sure it will solve most.
      I also don't think this is a 'woman only' problem as much as it is portrayed. Though on the other hand, as a man, I can honestly say that for some reason I'm really not as bothered by things as much as a woman is. I'm sure I will get a lot of anger directed at me for that, but both sexes need to talk openly and honestly and not be afraid to do so. I'm also, actually, a pretty sensitive guy, so if I don't always get it perhaps it will help people understand why other men might not get it and a conversation can begin there without beating each other over the head.
      For instance, I've been sexually harassed, well beyond its specific dictionary definition, and though I found it annoying, after it got to a certain point - where it may not have gotten if I said something sooner - when I said 'enough is enough' it ended and this has happened 4 times and in one case the woman was my superior and in the other my direct boss. So because I was able to handle these things, I suppose that's why I believe others probably can, too, or am I wrong? Sorry, too, if I was not respectful enough but I'm trying to be fair about all of this as some of the women who I have seen talk about their 'horrible experience' seem to be complicit in it. Such as the woman in this video, for instance.

      Why would I show compassion for a woman who willfully committed adultery to get ahead? I have been in situations where so called married "Sr. Leaders" in government hit on me and wanted to see if I would go along with it. I have always believed in doing what is right. As such, I saved the instant messages that were sent to me as evidence and submitted it to HR. HR did not fire him for sending me inappropriate messages about my body, they simply asked if the instant messages were legitimate, he apologized for the "mishap" and they transferred me to another office/division. I followed up with HR and attempted to file an official complaint against him, but it was apparent that the Sr. people in HR did not want to support me with complaint, because it would have drawn a lot of negative attention to the department and the administration's lackluster leadership.

Until you live it and even years after it happened can you start to begin to understand. I actually have not had another relationship since then because it is so difficult to trust myswlf that I am choosing a good person. Please be careful when getting into a relationship with someone in the office. Unfortunately many begin at work, but make sure it is not someone with more power than you. Ok, hold on a second... Why is this on TV? She had a consensual relationship with someone who had the life she wanted and looked up to. Any regrets are hers to carry. There's no way she didn't know what was happening. His advances could have been rebuffed at any time. It's not like he held her down... he said 'meet me here'. She could have simply not shown up. She was excited by it, until she felt regret. Most people would probably sleep with their heroes given the chance, especially if they could do it in secret.
    "I wanted advice..." Right. Then get it from Katie C, who got you the job. He stepped outside his marriage which is lame on his part, but this whole interview is a smear job, trying to paint him as a demon and her as this little innocent angel. She was 24 ffs. What a joke.

      Agree 1000%. She could have said no at any time. She could have "playfully" rejected him. Only if he forced her (in the dressing room) to do anything, would it be wrong. But she kept going back for a month. Did he "Lure" her as she stated? YES. That's usually how flirting works. But nowhere in this interview did I here him threatening her job or promotion. For the record, I'm not defending Matt L. I've read enough of the other stories to know he was a dirtbag. But this story is completely normal in any office/workspace.

      the point of the interview is to find out the situation that women are in when propositioned inappropriately. Even if it was consensual, it was sexual harrassment and very inappropriate. For one thing, Matt Lauer was married, and for another thing, he was her superior at work. This is pretty much the definition of sexual harrassment, and the interview is to educate others on why this is a difficult situation for women in the workplace.

      It's only classified as sexual harassment if it was unwarranted and unwelcome. She sure seemed to welcome it if she was already leaving that position, was able-bodied and consented to a month-long sexual relationship.

    • @rileyscott5827
      @rileyscott5827 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why "advice" and not advice? Is it so hard for you to believe that someone can ask another person for advice? It's not unusual. In fact it is very common, and i'm sure you know that. Also, people flirt, and say flattering things to others without pursuing them, without making advances whether it be verbal, physical, or both. ie, there is an element of doubt and uncertainty as to what will/could happen. And things don't have to end up in bed. If it turns out the other person fails to actually follow through on their word/promise and does in fact makes advances, that would be the point at which decisions would have to be made as to the course of action. It was her decision to have an affair and she made that knowingly and intentionally. That, along with the consequences of that decision is on her. My point is that up until the point when he was very clear about his intentions, esp. physically (trying to kiss her, for ex.), she's not to blame for any of that.

    Once you're over 21, you are a full fledged adult,..you know what an affair is. Matt and that woman from NBC were BOTH responsible for their affair. She got as much out of it as Matt did. She was getting a high knowing that she was having an affair with this powerful guy at NBC, and might have even subconsciously been thinking it would get her ahead in the company. We are getting too broad with our definitions of what sexual harassment is, and everyone just wants to get on the "I've been sexually harassed" train, or club, or whatever. It's taking away the legitimacy of women who've actually been harassed or hit on...people have affairs, and if all the women who later regret it, and want to wash it away by coming out and saying they were "sexually harassed," are just not taking responsibility for their part in it.

If she would have been prohibited from flying jet fighters if she wanted to there would be cries of "discrimination", "sexism" and of course "misogyny". But she's not intelligent enough to make decisions when it comes to who she sleeps with? Sorry, but from my perspective it would seem like women want it both ways. "Look at us a strong and capable" but if things don't turn out the way we want, THEN we get to revert back to being just young and naive. Must be nice to expect and get "do-overs". Men don't get to do that, we expect to be held responsible for our actions. We don't get to blame others. We have to own it.
      Now consider a lot of the stuff we read about sexual assaults on campus. How many of those cases are actually REAL sexual assaults, and how many are "second thoughts" or "regret" later? When a man sleeps with a women, and later regrets it (yes, it does happen) we have to chalk it up to it being a "life lesson" and move on. Women on the other hand get to play the perpetual victim card. And some women wonder why a lot of guys don't want to work around them????

      dennis..
      the point of the story you missed is that older men need to keep it in their pants when they work with young women. The point you missed is that a married man screwed around with a co-worker.
      The pathetic story is that you missed the point of this interview. But why don't we blame the woman when it was matt lauer that couldn't keep it in his pants? Appalling...

      So, if an "older man" unzips his fly then a 24 year old woman is bound to jump on him and it is totally out of her control?? Give a a break. Your point is the pathetic one. Did Matt Lauer put some kind of "trance" on her? She chose to be with him and that is that. If she thought it would better her career by doing so, that was her choice. She simply could have said "no" and moved on.

    Not everything is lost! I'm glad to read all comments from women here that see the truth that this woman wanted it as much as Matt, and now that she got nowhere she wants her 15 minutes of fame.

    Very Brave! thanks for your honesty, which I can call, honor!! yes true, at 24 you are technically an adult, and yes! you should know better, but, you are still young and with not much experience at the real world!! we are only human and yes, at 24 you can make stupid mistakes (and yes, at 50 we all can still make stupid mistakes)!! so, I think this is a very brave woman for sharing her story!! I want young girls to see this video!

    I can see both sides to this. I remember an old, disgusting boss constantly flirting with me at work and asking me out on a date after everyone had left the room during training before and I was still getting my bearings. I absolutely was not interested, not going to do it and disgusted.
    I was so nervous and afraid to lose my job. I was working on contract, under the impression that I needed to MAKE a good impression and didn't know WHAT to do. I talked to some friends at work who also didn't know what to tell me, but were disgusted, too.
    One of those friends was just as much of a siren as me if not more, and we both would talk about how we got lots of opportunities because of it. Neither of us caved in, that I know of. I don't believe thar she did, but I know I didn't.
    I felt that it was God when I got a job in another dept shortly after.
    It's easy (and the right thing, I believe, but still oversimplified) for that host to simply say "Choose honor" to that woman and "all other women" from the security of her job. That fear was REAL, however, of: "How will I support myself if I report this about the HEAD HONCHO as a new contractor and it blows up in MY face (because I know that a] someone knows what he's doing as b] I'm not his first OR only attempted victim)?" I literally could've been on the street.
    If you haven't walked in those shoes, you really don't know.

      So somebody asked you out and you have decided that was a bad thing. So if he was young and good looking you would have been ok with it.

    Idk. If you are of age and sound mind, it’s up to you to take responsibility for what you do. Not judging! I’m only saying that the good news is WE are in control of our life’s choices.

    conciously sleeping with a married man is not a mistake. Getting lost on the freeway is a mistake.
