Okay, it was referenced by a visiting Roman dinner attender at the time complaining about the strong smelling scent cones which offended by their strength. He did not like being strangled by the vapors. I think this was in the show called “Cosmos” by Carl Sagan.

I love looking at history and learning how people lived and all the similar things we can relate to. They were just like us in every aspect except the time they lived. Same intelligence, same desires, same physical body and so much more. I’m always impressed by how inventive and creative with what they had at their disposal. In many ways they were more versatile at adapting the resources available than what many people think. Thank you for covering these topics 😊

1:20 I didn't know there were depictions of people in a front view in ancient Egyptian art. I was even taught in school that the very aspect that set them apart was the side view of the head and members and a front facing torso.

I first learned about these back in the 80's, I had always thought it was a settled matter, good to know they've actually found a couple though. Seems to me this would be the perfect kind of thing for someone to try and recreate. What happens when you put a solid lump of wax on top of a mannequins head and leave it out in the desert sun for an afternoon? How long does it last? Is it better if it isn't solid? What kind of mess does it leave behind and is it hard to clean up in the evening?
A quick (and admittedly cursory) Google search doesn't turn up anything about anyone trying to recreate these things. So many questions that could be answered if some enterprising grad student would just get on this, think of the paper you could write! 😀

As the Egyptians lived in a hot environment, they were mad in love with Hawaiian shaved ice snow cones. However, as plastic and Styrofoam were yet to be discovered, their most vexing problem was that of reliable containers. A cone shaped hat coated in a thick layer of beeswax proved best at both insulating the ice treat and retaining the flavored syrup. Their favorite flavor (from Toasted Coconut, Cherry, Grape, Figg, to Pina Colada) would be color coded on their cone hats :)

I see a lot of comments suggesting the cones may have been insect repellant. I have a thought or two on this subject.
It looks to me as though many of the images of these cone wearers relate to rituals dealing with death, spirituality, and the afterlife.
When a body dies, decay begins pretty quickly and generally involves insects. Especially in drier climates where the lack of humidity inhibits bacterial and fungal growth to some extent, scavenging insects often do most of the work. Presumably, one might find a lot of biting insects in a place where corpses are stored.
It occurs to me that bug-repellant aromatheraputic cones would be very useful in situations surrounding death rituals, corpse preparation, wakes &c.; and also that some scents have been said to be able to alter one's state of consciousness, which might be applied ritually if one were attending a wake, seance, or similar event associated with the afterlife.
I don't see a conflict between the idea that the cones are for a spiritual purpose and the idea that they're insect repellant. If anything, I find it more likely that they are BOTH. It's hard to have a satisfying religious experience if your event is being swarmed by biting locusts.

My own theory, based entirely on the images I see here, is that these cones represented a physical adornment which was bestowed upon various persons who had, by whatever means, acquired great honor. The pictures look to me like the sort of ceremonies held to commemorate great deeds or accomplishments...

Sometimes I wonder about StarGate SG1. There are aspects of that show that seem to parallel real life in ways that I find curious and I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to it than just a fictional story.
I watched a video where soldiers were being briefed on various aliens; some of which they mentioned they would be fighting. If it’s real (and it’s sheer informality and lack of seriousness makes me think it was real; anyone faking it would go to lengths to make it seem more serious), I suspect that it depicts the reality that we’re helping other species in warfare since we’re so good at it. We may have martial abilities that have been lost with more advanced species. But that’s speculation of course.
There are recorded instances of seeming “battles” between groups of craft in the sky; the most famous example being the incident depicted by Durer in his famous woodcut print of craft over Nuremberg in 1561. I suspect that our media and entertainment have been giving us clues all along. I can’t help but wonder if Stargate SG1 to be a prime example of entertainment that may be letting us in on the secret. Did you see the episode where Martin Lloyd, a human looking alien who lost his memory of being alien, creates a tv show called “Wormhole Extreme”; which parallels the reality of the Star Gate Program in the show? At one point, Carter asks why the Air Force didn’t shut down the tv show; given that it depicts a top secret program, and one of the other characters answers that it provides plausible deniability for the Stargate Program; if anything about the Stargate gets out, it can be deflected as being from the tv show.
I can’t help but wonder if SG1 provides the same plausible deniability in real life. Is art imitating life within art imitating life? Of course this is rank speculation and there’s nothing that provides any kind of evidence, but there are some odd parallels between what’s shown in the tv show and what is speculated about within the UFO research community. Gotta wonder sometimes.

The cone is the origin of the Jewish Yarmulk.
Jewish monotheism evolved from the monotheism of Akhenaton, which is why the Jewish god is called the Adon (the Aton of Akhenaton). That is why Psalm 104 is a copy of the Hymn to the Aton. There are significant links between these two peoples and religions.
For many reasons, it is likely that Aaron and his brother Moses, were Akhenaton and his brother TuthMoses. And the Yarmulk is one of the derivatives of Atonism.
See the books ‘Eden in Egypt’, ‘Tempest & Exodus’, and ‘Scota, Egyptian Queen of the Scots’.

Ancient Egyptians loved break-dancing. They would spend so much time spinning on their heads that they were going bald and developing scalp calluses.
To prevent this, the cones were developed as a sort of protective spindle on which the wearer could rotate, effectively turning them into human tops.
Originally, the cones were wood and could ignite from the friction created by spinning. The initial cure for this was to wax and highly polish all the floors in Egypt; but this proved hazardous to pedestrians. It was Bolivar Shagnasty, visiting from Toledo, Ohio in 2345BCE who hit upon the idea of wax cones instead of wax floors. Dozens of bruised tailbones were prevented.
This invention caused a 2nd wave of break-dancing frenzy, and people could be expected to start whirling about on their cones at any moment. Therefore, the cones were worn as part of daily attire, much the way most people wear pole-vaulting hats today.

I have a feeling the cones oozed of something that kept the flies off. The Egyptians also painted their eyes with the black paste containing substances that killed bacteria from the tsetse fly (i.e.colostrum and lead), I was taught. The cones could only be worn by people who were able to keep their head straight all day long, and didn't have to do any heavy work. Just a thought.

We don't think about it much now but can you imagine the insects back then? These cones are, I believe, a symbolic representation of a reality.
Namely, the cones of aromatic, emollient fat routinely used in Ancient Egypt.
In my opinion, these were almost certainly, much smaller than depicted and not always carried on the head. They were significant, ceremonially, so are depicted proportionally to highlight that significance.

The "people didn't bathe in olden times" is just a trope, no one likes to stink, or that grimy feeling after not bathing for a while. Someone living in a hot climate within a 5 minute walk to the nearest water source would be foolish not to wash at least once every couple of days. I noticed little dots near the bases of the cones on the paintings and think that these holes were perforations to allow air to flow through as a person walked. Perhaps these cones were translucent and the colors seen in the paintings hint at material within the cones, specifically flowers, whose purpose would likely be as a pouperii to scent the air that the person just moved through. That’s my theory.

If they were holes rather than markings (the excavated ones don't really give a clue either way), then as well as providing airflow, they could also have been used as holes for fastening the cones to the wearer's head, either with sticks or thread.
