    A video that shows exactly what to do, with all the 'whys' behind the actions, and questions below that actually were answered instead of either being ignored or given a 'mechanical' or rote answer. I learned from both sections here because you took the time to give a darn. Thank you!

    Hi Shawn. Would like advice on how to thread tap a small Obsidian mantra bead that already has string holes all the way through the bead but needs a thread tap for 3.5mm. The bead is 12.1mmx8.1mm in size. The bead will be screwed onto a toggle switch as a DIY handle. The threaded part of the switch is 4.1mm in length by 3.5mm in diameter. Can this be done? Thank you.

    • @Azraiel.Bridger
      @Azraiel.Bridger 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soaps / detergents will only screw up your tools and burs you should never use soaps while grinding with diamond bits even " liquid" ones all you need is just plain room temperature water not too cold and deffinatly not to warm ...also I dont suggest " "soaking" semipermable stones prior to grinding or carving due to it causing the higher probability of cleaving or fracturing the stone in question you only need to wet the surface area mainly to protect the diamond bit/ burr so it does not lose its cutting ability and to keep the stone cool so as not to change its temper / color ect

    • @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613
      @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Though I have had no water issues drilling Naica mine type selenite in general, I understand your question with other minerals that have water issues . Most of those type minerals are very soft and so with a Diamond drill or core drill and using a lower speed, they are able to be drilled dry. You need to clean the hole of drill debris often and spin off and clean the drill bit itself IN water and you should have no problems with Mohs hardness of 2- 3type minerals. Shawn

      A dremel with a " snake" dremel accessory include many diffrent diamond bits and burrs and are fairly inexpensive ...proper care and pressure are honestly key factors you should never ever ever risk " dry" grinding any stone ever with a diamond bit / burr...its very easy to set up a small jeweler's vice and an aquarium pump to both hold a stone at a precise angle and keep the stone cool and lubricated ....this guy does not remotly pratice proper safty as the stone could chip or shatter with the way he is holding it and the forcefulness he is using ...

    • @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613
      @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marcelino- I prefer to use Diamond for all my drilling and mostly core drills to create a hole 1.5mm or larger. The speed depends on the material being drilled but in general…. The harder the material the faster I will use the Dremel with Corundum (Mohs hardness of 9- Ruby and sapphire) being almost maximum speed but make sure your using water for a coolant as you drill. If you are drilling something like malachite or rhodochrosite ( hardness of 4) or anything like Opal or material softer than quartz or Feldspar than you want to go much slower especially the thinner the material is. ANND THEN slow it way down as you approach the other side. I then usually bevel the edge of the drill hole so it doesn’t chip or cut into any material you are putting through the hole. Hope that helps! SHAWN

    Thank you

    • @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613
      @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ma - if you are referring to drilling a bead then you need to get an inexpensive Pearl or bead drilling clamp from one of the supply houses I mentioned or elsewhere on line so you drill the bead through the middle and not off center. There is also a Foredom Drill Press attachment to use your Flexshaft on and it works for drilling If you are talking about making your own beads then it’s a very expensive machine and not worth doing when they are so inexpensive to buy already made and drilled. I have an inexpensive bead maker and I would not recommend it. Not sure if that answers your question but that’s the only machines I can think of that are used in reference to gemstone beads or pearls. Shawn

    What a great teacher. This was refreshing to watch. What kind of drill bit should I use?

    • @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613
      @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The standard drill bit for drilling the small initial hole needed prior to burring for setting stones is referred to as a “twist” drill. The size depends on the stone size being set but is usually 1-1.5mm and is obtainable from any jewelry supply company and even your local hardware or home supply store may carry them.

    Hi Shawn, what do you recommend for drilling a hole in a Louisiana Opal sphere? The sphere is 2”x2” and I want to epoxy a bolt inside of it to mount it to the top of a staff. Thanks!

    • @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613
      @gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OH MY! I thought I was the only one with Louisiana Opal! Without seeing how much Opal to matrix there is or the piece in general in order to find a “SAFE” place to drill… my personal opinion ,… unless you have a lot of this material, would be to leave it ALONE! I have worked with that material and it is often bonded or sealed in order to cut it to start with… like Andamooka or Honduran Opal that is treated with a sealer or epoxy resin to stabilize it! It falls apart easily…. But if it has already gone through the rigors of being made into a sphere than it may be possible by using a Diamond Core drill and use the minimal size possible to avoid the risk of damage.
      A 1/8” hole would be as large as I would want to chance on that rare piece. Again, unless it is a very stable sphere like Queensland Boulder Opal that the matrix is durable ironstone that is much more durable. I would love to have a Louisiana Opal sphere that size and would have to err to the side of caution on doing that project.
      Like the amber piece o the cane in Jurassic Park!!… I would love that! So maybe consider a two part 24 hour setting time epoxy and cupped attachment against a roughed up part of the sphere might be a safer route!

    • @eatcobra

      @@gemcollectorswithshawnlgem4613 thanks for taking the time to reply! I have images and video of the sphere if that would help you! There is a part of the sphere that already has a sort of chipped out semicircle area toward what I would consider the bottom side of the sphere

    • @Jesse-tc1gz
      @Jesse-tc1gz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A 2-part Epoxy is easy to use, whether it's the 5-minute Epoxy or the hours-longer one,. Simply push out approximately a half inch of glue from each tube onto a piece of paper or cardboard. Then, using anything disposable such as a toothpick, a clean twig, a Popsicle stick, or the non-cotton end of a Q-Tip as your 'mixing stick', mix the two glue ingredients together. That's all there is to it. If you need more glue for a larger project, just push out more glue from each tube. Or push less glue out of each tube for a smaller project.
