That is a w123 chassis Mercedes. The reason that most of the stuff inside the car doesn't work is because there is a leak in the vacuum system (there is a lot of vacuum operated stuff in this car, which is weird for a diesel). It is also the reason that the car doesn't shut off. There is a little lever on the top of the valve cover that has a little red label that says STOP. You push on that lever to shut the car off. It was placed there for when the vacuum shut off system is leaking and the motor won't shut off. The reason you couldn't get the battery in/out was because you didn't put the hood in the service position so that it points straight up. There is a little lever on the hinge that you push that allows the hood to go all the way vertical, this is something that all Mercedes cars have. The OM617 is near bullet proof, it will run forever if you keep oil in it.
Those W123s are nearly indestructible. =)
@@zyamadeadborn1785 The drivetrain won't ever let you down, its the creature comfort features that all give up early.
@@trythistv exactly. I once wanted one of these but in the climate I live in they're all rusted through. But I still admire the design and overall sturdiness.
Kudos to Wackowacko, you know your stuff! Mercedes Diesel Driver from Germany here ;-)
@@zyamadeadborn1785 My very first car was a 1980 300SD (w116 body) that had been in an accident, I paid $300 for it as a 15 year old and repaired with my brothers help, I loved that car, but it was from the NY/Canada border area, and rust had a hold on the poor car. I still drove it and kept up with the rust to the best of my ability at the time. Now I've got a 1982 300D which is the same W123 body as in Rudys video. Phenomenal car, I've taken it on thousand mile road trips without hesitation and it has never let me down, I'm slowly trying to get all the creature comforts working!
That W123 was worth much more than $250. Good find.
That engine is still in use in the Norwegian army, it will run forever😊
Easily one of the best diesel engines ever made. Well played!
Get with joe over at doomsday diesel. GREAT guy and fantastic to work with. He knows the Om617 inside and out with all kinds of suport adaptors , turbo info as well as the pump upgrades you will need to get every ounce of power out of your rig
I was getting sad that I was running out of youtube videos to watch on a Sunday, and then here comes Rudy!!!
Hey Rudy, did some research on these motors and they can often live to 600,000+ miles and are known as one of the most reliable motors ever put in a car. It's so nice to see something other than another LS build like several of the other onxoffroad builds. Keep up the great work and the awesome builds dude 🤙🤙
Janelle, it is awesome seeing your lovely face on these videos. Great fun guys. 😊😊😊😊😊
There comes a time as elders when you’re watching the youth and the only thing you can think of is “well shit”.
A new high for the channel gentleman I love it. Just keep a first aid kit handy
Rudy its incredible to see how far and far this channel has come only one complaint not enough puppies in videos please fix 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
"We have to get Fun out of it" 🤣
No need to take the hood off - it has a ‘service mode’ position that will give you full access to the battery. W123 - best car ever made.
They removed the hood, because wasn't able to close it due to the battery got in the way.
Doomsday Diesel is the go-to for OM617 conversion and performance parts for the 617(and all the other OM6XX series)
Throw that Mini away and do it with the Mercedes! 😏
I thought that too, but they're building an off-roader. They'll cut the living crap out that car. Better to cut that BMW runt than this classic.
100%
Leave the MERCEDES ALONE!!! 12 VALVE THE MINI WITH SUMPTIN ELSE.... REBUILD "THE COAL SHOVELHEAD MERCEDES COMPLETELY !!! PEOPLE GIVE CRAZY MONEY FOR THAT MOTOR AND TRANS COMBINATION.... YOU CAN RUN BIO DEISEL IN IT!!! AND OTHER FLAMABLES AS WELL... IT EATS DRINKS AND GETS YOU MARY!!! IT IS A MERCEDES!!!! MARY WANTS A MERCEDES! JUST LIKE JANIS!
@@JeffDavis771 You realize that body will be going to the crusher after they yank the motor.
Was thinking the exact same thing. Seeing this vs the Jaguar during the tug-o-war would have been fantastic!
I know this is YT and you guys do fun stuff with builds and cars and whatnots, but a W123 has earned its stripes in the annals of automobile history for it not to be thrashed this way.
Congrats on your OnX Contest, but it hurt a lot to see the donor car for this build
your w123 is beautiful compared to mine, but yet.... mine still rides like a dream
Good buy for that price. If those are the Fuch wheels they’re super light and somewhat sought after. Don’t scrap them.
It has a mechanical vacuum pump on the front of the engine. If the pump is shot or there's big leak it won't shut off. There's a red label on the top of the throttle linkage you can push to shut it off. There's not a single wire to run or stop that engine. It's all mechanical.
And even though it's an automatic it can be bump started. They're the ultimate end of the world machine.
If you ignore the original Beetles.
@@johnt.848 Beetles are legendary, I've owned at least 75 air-cooled VW's in my life. But they need ignition power.
But the Mercedes OM617 diesel engines need no electricity to run. If you can get it spinning enough, it will run. And they'll eat anything, diesel, kerosene, jet-a, veg oil & some used motor oil. I currently have three 1983 300SD's, I recently drove one from Atlanta to Philly and back at 30.5 mpg.
I also have a 7.3 Power stroke addiction...
I put in a vote for you today. Can't wait to see the mini build. :D
I put an om617 in my 1989 range rover classic. Greatest engine ever made.
Hallo Rudi
love those old mercs, such beautiful cars
The indestuctible MB OM617... 👍 One of the best engines ever built! And problaby the best choise as a replacement engine for 1/2 dun. You can find the newer verision of that diesel engine in Jeep Grand Cherokee’s. But here’s a PRO tip for that old enginge, Please check the valve adjustment. Those lifters tend to expand and holding the valves open. And you got to modify a wrench to be able to adjusting the valve lash.
Old Mercs, love em...
I wish you have restored the benz, it is the best car ever made
I took a lot of taxi rides in Mercedes just like that one while stationed in Germany. Same color and all.
My mom had that same car when I was in high school. It was a fun car for a diesel.
I love your channel, Rudy, Janelle and Zack, above all the others, you know who I’m talking about.
I just wish the frequency was more reliable, if you understand.
You guys are great entertainment, whether it’s just doing stuff or doing mad stuff like this vid, it doesn’t matter.
Excited. Had one transplanted by an engineer in Germany...... into a Unimog 404. Loved that rig.
Building one right now in a TJ. Refreshed engine, Good trans (far as I know) and going to an NP242 AWD/4WD Tcase mated to 5speed. (Tcase gear ratios same as NP231) doing that cause the torque of the diesel in 2wd on wet roads makes it way over steer in the short wheel based chassis of a TJ. In light snow ice we get here in the Rust Belt.... its going to be way worse. Even my past non diesel TJ would spin out easy on slipper roads.. in 4wd and completely out of the blue.
Another big reason behind wanting OM617 is it is very tolerant to other light oil fuels. I've got to live more frugal. Soc. Sec. does not cover much. So part time job will be making my own fuel for heat, vehicles, etc. (even have diesel motorcycle project(s) in the works plus a CAT powered overland truck to live in so can rent out house for income. )
When I was a kid, my mom had a non-turbo version of that car, a 1984 240D 4-spd manual, same color. So, funny seeing it on your channel. That interior brings back memories. It was also unbelievably slow. 0-60 was measured in minutes, not seconds.
I can attest to the slow. Dad had the same one at one point. When we moved to Colorado in 1999, it couldn't make up any steep hills and we always had to take longer routes to avoid hills. Lol
You got my vote Rudy and the RAD team! 👍🏼
That Mercedes is sweet. I always wanted one just like that
I have one of these sitting on 31 inch tires and spacers on the coils its soo much fun, i would suggest a oil filter relocation kit i got mine from doomsday diesel hes also really helpful if you got questionsvon power upgrades, also get the alda delete from him gives you a little boost in power
Thank you for the referral!
@doomsdaydiesel brother thank you for the help on my om617
Great video! Love the care and gentle handling you give that great old car!! LOL!! Looked like a LOT of fun driving it! Can't wait to see the engine transplanted into the Cooper.
To fix your parking lot I suggest dragging a length of farm fencing behind your vehicle. It'll smooth a wide area and won't easily flip over. It is how my granddad did it and it is still very effective.
That mini reminds me of the Italian job!
Save the 300D for next year! I rallyed the hell out of mine, it's a much better rig than the mini!
A buddy of mine had one of these old turbodiesel mercedes that he got really cheap. The exhaust was trashed so he put a stack through the hood and drove it around like that.
This is gonna be a fun build
"Kids in Utah having a good time there all watching Rudy's design"...
My father had '79 300SD with that engine. It was a dog of an engine. Turbo lag was horrendous and it only had 120 HP in a car that was incredibly heavy. It was a great car for cruising all day on the freeway, as long as you don't need pass anyone or go up a hill. I think he put over 250K miles on it.
As another said: use this instead of the mini. I wanted one of these in the station wagon model.
Awesome Mercedes, I grew up with those cars, only thing now, I’m too tall to fit in them, glad to know you cat a 2.5 turbo in the states, I will like that in a couple of trucks around here. Now I understand why you said you ready for the drag race.
Too tall? you do know that the drivers seat is height adjustable as standard? (theres a handle on the outside that looks like it would be for an ejection seat.)
@@nirfz I’m not going argue about that, I may have missed that “handle” I look for it next time. Thank you!
@@allertnel282 No problem. My dad an later myself owned a W123 300D wagon. A 1984 model (we combined had it from 1990-2002) And as it had 5 or 6 previous owners there was no owners manual with it.
We only figured out what the handle does in the last months i owned it. (Nobody ever dared/bothered to pull on that handle before, the seating position was alright as it was.) We figured out other small things only by chance too. (I do look through the owners manual of every car when i get it since. As there are always features one would miss otherwise)
I’m so happy to see
I’m somewhat pained about what you’re doing to this poor old vehicle, I’m also joyed that this fantastic engine gets to be doing something that is so totally out of line with the life it had so far.
i love there old Mercedes, they are not fast at all or very exating but they start and go everytime
Rudy, a metal pipe and some chain and about 6 feet of chain link fence, maybe a couple tires thrown on top and you’ll have a one man grader.
My dad had a 79 w123 turbo diesel growing up. 4 speed. I learned to drive manual in that car when I was about 8 years old. Good times.
One of those would make a cool derby car. They ae freaking tanks.
Rudy, Try adding a ten-foot section of old chain link fencing to the tow iron instead of maiming the camera guy!
OnX is so tictoc hip with their “challenges”. Does everyone there have handle bar mustaches? I can’t wait to sign up n get emails every hour from them
One of my most painful injuries from working on cars was working on a old Mercedes diesel. It had chrome plated aluminum wheels, and the chrome was flaking. I was taking the wheels off with a socket wrench (all I had) and a piece of the chrome went under my finger nail about an inch. Man that hurt, I've had worse injuries but none more painful.
aah the glorious W123 with the even more glorious OM engine ..... which would fit lovely in a Jeep Cherokee ( hint hint )
Pretty unique combination with the Merc mini offroad paranoiabil!!!!!
The first car I drove. I was 8 years old then.
Fun is fun, don’t matter what others think. Great video.
There was a greek taxi driver who had one of those (non turbo). He aquired over 3 million km on the car.
Mercedes got wind of that by a letter from his niece or granddaughter. They contacted him and "exchanged" his car for a then new c-class of his choice. They placed the car in the Mercedes Museum in Suttgart germany.
And then there's north africa where these are still used as taxis. Despite being from the late 70's or early 80's. They just run if you keep the engine a little maintained (change oil and filters regularly for example)
I had such a 300D wagon (non turbo) with a 4 speed manual as my first car. It was over 14 years old and had been used to carry all sorts of material to build a house before i got it. Great memories!
I was thinking about buying one of these and then saw this 😂.
my dad has a 89 g wagon military everything is german , we drove 40 minutes in 4 low thinking man this thing is torquey , not knowing what the words were , anyways we swapped this same engine into it , it still runs like a champ , put a bigger turbo and more fuel it will pull a house down !
Forget the Merc ,more interested in the trucks in the yard 😊
Rudy, Rudy, Rudy you are just having way too much fun...lol if spray just a little nos it helps the tubro spool up a lot faster, get you right in that power ban...lol
Showing us the turbo. That's a sign. Y'all are in for a" LOT " of work !!
No one else will say it but I will.... IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!
capable of 500,000 km without problems in 1990 or 11 I drove this Mercedes 300 D cylinders 3 liters of displacement, well it is a calf which weighs a dead donkey but as long as there is fuel it takes you to your destination, if you drive the only gauge that moves is that of the fuel which obviously decreases.
I never imagines a W123 300TD drift car!!!
Again joe at Doomsday diesel. I'm running an om617 with he221 turbo, 7.5 pump, water to air intercooler backed buy a 4l60e .14blot rear and 44 front with 4.11 gears and 35s in myn1970 scout 800. Do the engine right and your mini will climb a tree
You might want to know that the original Fuchs rims on it sell for more than you paid for this rig
😂😂Thank God you have a Janelle around to keep an eye on you 😊😊
I’ve been 130 mph in a diesel Mercedes that me and my dad rebuilt
Amazing videos from awesome people!
That was Awesome
I loved the driveway scraping idea,😂 noice!
This is getting Roadkill vibes. Keep it up!
best car ever made ,Period.
Super excited about Mercedes diesel engine next om606 👌
You made greatest decisions buying a W123 Mercedes and a bad decisions not building something unique out of it, it would have been an amazing project with your taste of building stuff. it really is a work horse, waiting to see what will happen to that poor W123.
See our mate in Yorkshire,England dieselpumpUK and he will sort you out with 400HP for yout OM605.
Oh man flashbacks. Look at my username.
EXCITED!
Red dye diesel on camera is absolutely devious work as the kids would say
I don’t usually comment, but… I was both sad and glad to see this w123. I owned two Mercedes diesels in the 80’s, a 1981 240D and then a 1985 300TD.
I do wish you had learned a little about that 300TD engine before abusing it. The 300TD may be one of the best cars ever built. It’s a beast, but it requires a little love to last forever.
Don’t listen to the guys who’ve never owned one tell you how slow or weak they are. The TD is a strong and torquey engine that is bulletproof if you check the oil and adjust the valves regularly.
Do right by that it or and it will do right by you.
it sounds sick
This thing is rust free
Keep that cool mercedes and ls swap it for daly drive
whoa. That Mini looks insaaane!
Thats a badass ratrod mercedes, love your content rudy!
quality motor that merc. Not a good idea to rev the nuts off it when it's cold though :D
Like someone said, vacuum pipes, lots of vacuum stuff on the mercs including the engine stop, my van is the same
I love the mad max vibe with the goggles
I'd 100% rather see a built over landing Mercedes than the mini Cooper 😎
Doomsday diesel is the place to get upgrades and adapters.
After the donut the dog wanted out so bad he risked bolting as the door was closed lmao
One of the best sounds.
Check out Diesel pump uk . He has an unreal landrover with a 5 pot merc diesel .
The motor sounds fine.
I have never seen one of those "drift" before........
Those MB diesels are bullet proof.. I put one of those motors in a 2000 chevy S10 blazer. search benzblazer here on YT , They also love running on veggie oil. It wont shut off because you have no vacuum , if the vacuum pump fails you have no vacuum to turn it off, its a common failure after becoming 40 years old or you have a massive vacuum leak somewhere... and with a car where everything in the car is run by vacuum too.. even stuff like the power locks etc..
Up the boost to 30psi and give it more diesel, the engine will love it, and impress you 🤗
You need to contact Doomsday Diesel for bell housing adapters and such
THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO
Mercedes BENZ is a trooper!!! You can run almost any FLAMABLE fuel in it!!! So do not cut this up!!! " Doc Brown " it!!! 1.8 gigawatts and can run on TRASH!!!! Mercedes for the WIN!
S = is for sport shift mode.
Surprised no one is talking about the Cooper.....That thing actually look really nice. The clearance all the way around looks like you could climb anything and not ever drag or rub anything. Those tires, and the engine and that thing actually looks like it's gonna be a beast. I haven't looked at anyone elses build but I feel like the Cooper is gonna be a winner.
