Great points Alex! It would be very instructional if you included your actual presentation notes to view, can you do that please? The full outline is listed in the description, but what did you have as notes during this presentation?
I'll be having an extemporaneous speaking on Monday, it's a competition my teachers signed me up when I'm not even good at it. I'm really nervous! This helps a lot thanks!
I have to perform a speech like this for an interpersonal communications final. Luckily we are just recording ourselves and submitting it, but still always feel goofy doing these.
I'm a Communications studies major at city College of San Francisco, and our teacher assigned this video to teach extemporaneous speaking. The info is great, but I noticed one small thing, you "pare down" notes, not "pair down".
You got it. Life is not a tight wire, not about perfection. Just progress. If I waited until I really had everything perfect, I'd have never posted a single video. Now I have over 100 videos on the channel and I'm having so much fun with it. I didn't even own a camera two years ago. I'm learning the video side of things as I go. Plus, it's hard to catch my own silly mistakes like typos. I see other people's typos but I have a hard time catching my own. I have heard a lot of people struggle with that. I just do my best, take the feedback, and try to improve the next time around. Side note, I've been to San Francisco about 12 times over the past 5 years to do workshops and consulting and you all have some of the best restaurants I've ever experienced. Some of those places are next-level delicious.
I stumbled across this video preparing for my junior high English class unit on public speaking. So glad I did! Which one of your courses would help us walk through the more detailed structure diagram you show on the "Introduction-Body-Conclusion" slide?
Hi Heather. I have templates in my paid classes, especially Present Like a Pro. But I'm not recommending you start by paying for a class. That's an expensive class. I always have 1 or more free classes on my site that you could start with. The links to those are in the description of most of my new videos.
Next month will be my first extemporaneous speech contest and i dont know how to organized my ideas yet i used to say a lot that i go beyond the topic any tips sir?
The classic Intro, body, conclusion (with 3 points in the body) is a good starting place to organize your ideas. I have a video on that. It's long but it may help: th-cam.com/video/4bwDr7WVBwo/w-d-xo.html

Is there truly a universal aversion to being read something that was prepared ahead of time? I suppose I have limited personal experience to work with here but I don't know if I can say I would mind if something was read to me.
When I'm speaking in an extempo, I only use information I know. People have these tendencies where they spit out information they're unsure of that may hinder the speaking process
Its really embarrassing that im now at college and yet i suck at speaking publicly. Im so bad at arranging my thoughts and thining about answers/ ideas. and i am going to have my speech 5 mins from now and my heart is beating so fast that i want to pass out. Dear God help me.
I'm not sure what to do. An extemporaneous speech usually means you can use some limited notes. I would ask your teacher for clarification. If you are truly allowed no notes, then I would have my topic sentence of each main point memorized but I would not attempt to memorize everything within each point word for word. As long as you have your basic outline memorized, you'll be able to rely on that if you get stuck. Good luck.
Just keep working at it. Public speaking is a life-long skill that will benefit you for life. Some presentations will go well, others will not. But, if you keep looking for opportunities to speak, you'll get better over time.
Communication Coach Alex Lyon Thank You so much for this advice! The competition was yesterday and unfortunately, I didnt win... in the 1st elimination, I was top 1, same thing went for the 2nd one but for the finals (3rd), I wasnt even a medalist which was a bummer and embarassing. Esp since ive been part of the speech fest since my past 2 highschool years (im in 8th grade) but for next year, itll be about debate and even tho its not extempo, i still get to try and be in the finals, speak and voice out my opinions and im aiming for a wimming medal this time and I SWEAR im gonna do my best to win and i wont let nervousness and pressure take over me❤️❤️🙌🏻🙌🏻
this is not an extemporaneous delivery, this is called speaking naturally. Extemporaneous delivery is absolutely spontaneous and does not require much preparation besides being aware of the main points
That’s a common misunderstanding of the word. In the world of public speaking, in textbooks, and in speaking competitions, the word extemporaneous is used to describe prepared speeches that are delivered in a conversational way from limited notes. What you’re describing is called, “impromptu” speaking. With that type of speech, a speaker is not allowed more than a few moments of preparation. They are given a prompt or a question, and they are expected to come up with a speech “off the cuff.” The word extemporaneous is not merely about how a speech is delivered, it also has to do with the way of speech is prepared beforehand.
@@alexanderlyon language evolves. If the current understanding is that the word extemporaneous describes speaking from an outline, then embrace it instead of arguing about the definition of the word. There is nothing extemporaneous about being well prepared for the talk.
There's no debate here. You're repeating the most common misunderstanding about these two words as they are used to describe public speaking. I hear this all the time. Here's the definition from the 2023 instructor's edition of the most popular Public Speaking book in the entire world ( *_The Art of Public Speaking_* , by Stephen Lucas). "1. However, for speech delivery styles, *_this is not the case_* . An extemporaneous speech is planned and practiced, but when delivered, is not read. Presenters will normally rely on small notes or outlines with key points. This type of delivery style is recommended because audiences perceive it as more conversational, natural, and spontaneous, and it will be delivered in a slightly different manner each time, because it’s not memorized." In summary, as the sources above explain, an extemporaneous speech is planned, prepared, and practiced. An impromptu speech is done spontaneously without [much] time to prepare. Both, however, are delivered in the moment in a natural conversational style. This leads many people to confuse the two types of speeches.
