New Mexico wildfires feel like a "war zone" with around 500 homes destroyed

  • Two wildfires burning near Ruidoso, N.M., killed at least one person and damaged an estimated 1,400 structures - including approximately 500 homes, according to reports.
Melissa Fesmire and her son Christopher Bright have lived at least 14 years in Ruidoso, and they say the fires burning through the New Mexico village are like nothing they've seen before.
Christopher told Reuters on Wednesday that the sound of planes and sirens and the constant smell of smoke made him feel like being "in the middle of a war zone."
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham told media on Thursday that there will be an additional 200 to 300 firefighting personnel dispatched to aid in extinguishing the blazes.
The entire village of Ruidoso (population 7,000) was evacuated, officials added.

Many trees did burn. Depending on the winds and underbrush, healthy fires will stay low to the ground and be benificial to the ecosystem. If they get into the crown they burn hot, do damage to the soil and kill many trees. These kinds of fires can take a century to recover from. Most wildfires cause a mozaic of understory and crown damage. One of the biggest problems of the western US is the Forest Service supressed all fires for over 100 years causing the forests to be overgrown and unhealthy. They changed the police in areas where there are no humans but around towns like Ruidoso they still try to put them out so the forests are still pretty unhealthy. They try to do perscribed burns to keep these forests healthy when the conditions are good but sometimes they screw up and the perscribed burns get loose and burn a lot of buildings. This occured in Los Alamos and in Ruidoso in years past. This fire was not a perscribed burn. I personally would not have a house in a forested area in the Western US.

This just happened in our community last year, we lost over 500 homes, most still not whole again yet. All the people complaining about government spending and no government help at all can shut the H up. We need to make funds to help people that have lost everything and I will be happy to pay taxes so people can carry on with their lives. The Insurance companies need to step up and pay out instead of fighting everyone, they have made trillions of dollars off all of us over the years and it’s time to pay the piper..in my area they have started canceling home owners because they had to turn in a claim,,,what the hell are they for, these people some of them have paid in for 30 or 40 years, they have lined their pockets and want to leave people hanging with nothing…that’s not even counting the ones that didn’t have insurance.. their just screwed.. what a pathetic way to treat people. I always thought we were better than that… turns out we are not.

Insurance is a scam! My sister is in pensacola and hurricane damaged the bottom floor.

It's a Real bummer That w/all the Knowledge people have now. That No 1 has invented Fire proof trees, Well, it'd have to be something done after they've grown, doubt there's seeds like that. Be cool if so. Also,Maybe put Some like Built in irritations all around forests. That'd be a great investment.

There are about 7 thousand wild fires per year world wide, this number has been slowing for the last 20 years. More resources for fighting fires would be a great help.

What can you do politicians see it as an easy win to "reduce the deficit" so they'd rather watch the planet burn for short term quarterly gains. And you're right that there are less forest fires per year but the acres burned has doubled in the last decade
