    South Korea is developing a ballistic missile that can exert as much power as a tactical nuclear weapon.
    The military's defense blueprint also includes plans to hike spending of around six-percent yearly.
    Lee Kyung-eun has the details.
    South Korea is developing a ballistic missile,.. that can be as destructive as a tactical nuclear weapon.
    According to military sources on Thursday, the missile can carry a warhead of up to 3 tons a major scale-up following the complete lifting of the US-imposed missile restrictions.
    One expert says,... that the new missile's explosive power itself,... is not even close to being compared with that of a tactical nuclear weapon,... which can be several hundred tons of T-N-T.
    But it can be fired to an altitude of 500 kilometers,... before dropping at a super-fast speed,... during which,... extreme power is generated.
    "The energy created during the high altitude drop is strong enough to penetrate the ground and destroy underground bunkers. In that sense, it can be used as a tactical weapon that destroys underground missile facilities."
    The new missile is highly likely to be operated before 2026,... given that the Defense Ministry, earlier on Thursday, vowed to develop more powerful and accurate missiles,... as part of its five-year plan.
    That plan also includes strengthening surveillance capabilities by deploying small reconnaissance satellites.
    This dramatic scale up of weapon technologies comes as the country's military aims to shift its focus from manpower to technology.
    "Soldiers will be kept at around 500-thousand in terms of manpower numbers, but the military will become more technology-oriented"
    Some 273 billion U.S. dollars will be injected starting from 2022 to help carry out the plans,... with the annual budget set to increase 5-point-8 percent on-year.

    SK must keep giving the international society trust and persuade the US for arming with nuclear weapons. Getting support from friends is the only way to have nuclear weapons.

      In fact, South Korea also wanted President Park Chung-hee to develop nuclear weapons around this time. According to the Ferguson report, the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from South Korea and the complete withdrawal of U.S. nuclear weapons have further strengthened efforts to develop nuclear weapons by Park Chung-hee.

    It is time for S Korea, Japan, and Australia to develop nuclear weapons. The US should supply the design for the nuclear weapons and technical knowledge on how to maintain them safely.
    I’d like to see the US sell the latest version of the Ohio class boomer to S Korea, Japan and Australia. These nations should offer each other support and dual use bases and use of replenishment ships.

    This is fine and completely necessary given China, North Korea and Russia's hostility towards the rest of the world

      South Korea doesn’t view Russia as that hostile. South Korea also buys Russian military technology. And don’y forget America is more hostile to the rest of the world than Russia, China, (Even though all three superpowers are fighting for influence in this multipolar world and have each of their own wrongdoings) But South Korea should instead have their own nuclear weapons to defend it’s own sovereignty and be more self-reliant.

      @@christophermbolinanipower1667 south korea is under american control. Thus, its views or opinions are worthless and make no difference whatsoever. That country has no sovereignty to defend. And if the North make a decision to strike, nukes wouldn't stop them at all. They are ready for this kind of conflict with the US since long ago.

      @@user-ss1sm9fl2h nobody is ever really ready for a nuclear conflict. It’s a lie military strategists have told for years. You can build all the bunkers you like and have cunning plans, but when you come up the outcome is the same: Both sides are glassed and you have no one to rule over. Nobody wins a nuclear war.

    South-Korea must invest in these sectors to always have a passive Nuclear weapons & Ballistic Missile capability:-
    (1) Nuclear-Energy => PWRs & FBRs
    (2) Space-Technology => Launch Vehicles
    (3) Nuclear Attack-Submarines (SSNs)
    (4) Strategic Uranium Reserves

      South Korea's nuclear development program was discussed with Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil, saying, "When the U.S. forces completely withdrew from the Nixon Doctrine, we could develop nuclear weapons and have technology that the U.S. could not build." At that time, Korean politicians were in favor of developing nuclear weapons when Nixon Doctrine declared the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Korea.

    NOT true. A nuclear weapon's real threat is in its radioactivity ,heat wave and fallout and NOT the explosive capabilities. For example,the explosive power combined dropped in Tokyo and Dresden during WW2 was many times more than Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The missile mentioned here just emulates one aspect of a small tactical weapon-that as a kinetic energy weapon. I was a college student, a student corps company leader when we had mandatory military training at high school and college and we learned about these dangers of a nuclear weapon and actually did things like fallout cover training. Watch BBC "Threads" from one year after that time.

    S Korea has right to build nuclear weapons in NPT when threaten and N Korea clearly shown that. Best defense for S Korea is to have its own tactical nuclear weapons and destroy N Korean nuclear weapons sites before it fires it's missiles using hyper speed technology which can hit N Korean targets within a minute from SLBM nuclear submarines surrounding N Korea.

      Currently, South Korea faces a nuclear threat from North Korea. Therefore, South Korea can only prevent war if it has nuclear arms. So the US should allow its ally, South Korea, to arm itself with nuclear weapons.

      @@user-lz2sn9cb6o S Korea already has right to build its own tactical nuclear weapons with NPT rule. NPT said S Korea can build its own nuclear weapons if it is threaten with nuclear weapons which N Korea did made the threat using nuclear weapons first. Only fools in Seoul decided not to build nuclear weapons.

    The primary purpose of South Korea's nuclear possession is to check North Korea and China. Therefore, unless there is a sudden plan to wage an all-out nuclear war with the U.S. or Western European countries, such as the thousands of kilometers of ICBMs are unnecessary. Likewise, the more high-end military materials such as SSBNs, cruisers, bombers, and nuclear strategic bombers, the better, but there is no reason for Korea to have all of these unless it seeks global hegemony. Rather, it is enough for South Korea to develop only one way to somehow drop nuclear weapons without being disturbed in the event of an emergency on North Korean and Chinese soil and invest all its technology in it. As long as we have developed nuclear weapons, we will definitely need an MD system, including ABM, but this is a necessary part even if we do not develop nuclear weapons as long as there are threats from powerful nuclear powers such as North Korea, China, and Russia. In particular, North Korea has no guarantee that South Korea will leave equally gentlemanly just because it does not fire nuclear weapons, and that there is no guarantee is the beginning of all the security dilemmas that South Korea has.
