    Btw, thank you for your videos, it is fascinating to see how you cut gems, not to mention that you sound like an Aussie version of Bob Ross the painter..soothing to listen to 😄

    Cliff, I could watch you cut all day long. This was a very entertaining and informative video. The animation was great, and I was happy to see Jaws had a bone... Liked your hat by the way.
    That Citrine stole the show. Your modification of the design's pavilion angles certainly removed any hint of windowing in all three stones.
    I'm with you regarding rose quartz. It definitely is a "buzz killer" coming off the dop. I've got six pieces in my box of rough and think I'll take them over to the local club for the faceting class to practice with.
    Thanks much for another great video. Cheers.

      Hi John, the citrine was certainly the best. Yep, no more Rose quartz faceting for me. Best left for other things. Cheers Cliff

    The citrine is GORGEOUS!!! The others too, but the citrine was the clear winner in this contest. Loved the animations you included! You are becoming a master video creator too!
    Have the fires abated, and is the smoke gone in your area? Pats to Jaws.

      Thanks Jo Ann, Yes the Citrine was so much better than the other two gems. I enjoyed the animation. I don't watch much TV so I find making a video more interesting. Cutting gems and making video's in my spare time.

    That smokey citrine has such a beautiful warm color. The faceted rose quartz is really muted I have heard other Faceters say. I have heard cabbing them can result in chatoyance or cats eye or star effect. I might be willing to try that with some I have.
    Regardless all three gems are beautifully cut. In the 2nd gem I could really see the hints of pink. The third one is so clear but at the same time its not.
    That warm Citrine though... just gorgeous!

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tam, the Citrine is a real show stopper. My friend should be pleased with this gem. Looks even better in real life. The Rose Quartz also looks better than on the camera, but this will be the last time I facet rose quartz. Too silky to give much return. I've been tempted too many times buying really pink Rose Quartz thinking it will look great faceted, but it never does.

    This is absolutely stunning, mesmerizing, fascinating!! How beautiful are the gems you’ve created! Thank you so very much for sharing this, and the way in which you make the video is superb, going through the steps clearly, and then the long showing of the cuts finished - and then again, polished -- is perfect. The whole thing is truly mesmerizing. I was a wee bit disappointed not to see how the stone was set for the gift for your friend’s daughter - did you ever see it? Or did he just want the stone cut?

    I've been wanting to try a Portuguese cut for a while now, but the thought of matching up all those meetpoints is quite daunting. I'd probably have to use my worn 1200 grit lap to keep from overcutting.

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This design is not too difficult. The hard part is choosing the right index number.

    • @albeon_draken
      @albeon_draken 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not too difficult. I only have a 96 at the moment.

    • @marypagac305
      @marypagac305 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      “The thought of matching up all those meet cuts” … indeed!! I don’t know what it means exactly, bc I’m not a lapidary (sp.?) nor do I play one on tv! But it has always been a great mystery and a marvel to me HOW exactly all these dozens if not hundreds of facets are cut so precisely and symmetrically, and I have begun to do research and watch videos to try and find the answer to the riddle. YOUR video has come the closest; I have seen videos on setting up a computer rendition of the faceted stone as the angles and number of cuts are decided upon and selected, but the piece I’m missing is how the digital rendering is transferred to the actual cutting - is something programmed into the machine with the arm that you drop down to the sander that lays it precisely on the angle and the position of the facet you want to create and have chosen in the digital rendering? You certainly cannot “know” by feel and/or sight just how much to turn it to get, say, 20 perfectly symmetrical facets on a tier - CAN you?!

    Great video and really nice Portuguese cut stones, Cliff. There are so many facets on each stone. When you transfer the stone to cut the crown, how do you go about removing the epoxy?

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mr Q, The dop and epoxy is detached by heat. I use a small handheld blow torch and wrap the gem with a piece of wet tissue so it wont heat up.

    • @MrQuadragon
      @MrQuadragon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I've wondered about trying this but never had the courage. I have been cutting the epoxy with a razor blade but this is time consuming and can leave marks on the brass dops which I don't like. I usually use dop wax but for smaller gems I figure epoxy will hold the stones better. I am cutting a small emerald today, and I will try out this technique.

    Have a question here in utah we have a place to collect topaz . Prize would be what they call here root beer topaz .butwill fade to clear in sunlight. If you facet a root beer stone ,and intime it it fades . Will the brilliance also fade?

    • @VintageTimeGems

      Portuguese cuts have deep pavilion. I would expect that half the weight will be lost.

      I doubt I will ever facet another Rose Quartz again. The transparent lighter Rose Quartz was not too bad, but not breathtaking. I think many of the photo's you see of Rose Quartz faceted are doctored up on photo shop or with some type of image enhancing software. Some of the prices asked for rough Rose Quartz is a joke. Looks promising in the rough, but becomes the big let down once faceted. Cheers
